Yup, the K-1. I would've thought it would at least work in manual mode... my old Yongnuo worked fine :(

I have a Mecablitz 36 (Pentax version) which fires when I press the pilot button with the flash off-camera, but I doesn't fire when it's mounted on the hot shoe. Is there a setting I missed somewhere? I've set flash to "on" in the menu.

You can set the focal length in the menu, the option appears when the lens isn't automatically recognized.

Crop mode is pretty superfluous if you post-process at all. As far as I can tell it just applies the same digital crop you can do yourself in any image editing program; also, both my crop lenses are useable in full-frame with manageable vignetting.
If you want out-of-camera JPEGs it's a quick way to be sure you get what you see in the viewfinder. Apart from that, it's not really worth the hassle for me.

Just to be clear: I don't leave my gear unattended. But cars get hot during the day and stay that way a bit after you get back to them, load up your stuff and set off for home :)

Not sure why you're picking out this comment, but the poster was asking about the reference to the flash in a previous post. Seems like a valid question.
The battery went to 2 bars after the weekend. Panic set in.

I'm dragging my K1 along everywhere and it sometimes gets pretty hot in the car (NOTE: don't panic - I'm not talking about leaving the camera in the car unattended. That kind of deafts the purpose of lugging it around!). When should I start getting worried? Is it just the battery that doesn't like high temperatures?

I spent all day yesterday shooting a baptism reception and the battery is still at full bars. I'm wondering if anyone has drained the battery and how long it's taken - my K5ii tended to show high battery levels for ages and then drop like a stone, so I'm not sure how it's holding up.

As awesome as the K1's screen is, I don't use it. There's now so many physical buttons that I only really go into the menu to format the SD card or add a User mode.
Does anyone know of a screen cover type of thing in the pipeline? A simple slab of plastic that I can put on top of the screen to stop it getting dirty or scratched. Any alternative suggestions are also welcome :-)

That just makes it worse, cause it means I did this on my K5ii and forgot :)

Okay, I think I'm missing something here. My M 50/1.4 is also showing the F--; is there a setting for manual lenses I'm missing?
EDIT: Found it. Menu C4, enable shutter when aperture ring is not set to A.

Seems like it. I think the vignetting only becomes a problem with the sunshade extended.
After a few more tests, it seems like the lens doesn't vignette perceptibly at 2.8 and not at all on 3.5 onwards. You just see the sunshade in the frame when it's extended. I guess a wider shade might even work if you really need one, but I don't have one in that thread size to test.

I'm hearing "own one and love it" on one end, "don't own one and don't want one" on the other, and a concerning number of people who tried it and couldn't make it work for them.
For the moment, I'm going to hold off on getting a grip (ha!). It seems a bit pricey to gamble on liking it in use, especially since I wasn't able to order it with the body at the discount rate.
Thanks everyone for all the input, and by all means continue the discussion - I'd love to have my decision validated and/ or my mind changed!

I've had it happen exactly once. Prague, with my A640 that I forgot to pack spares for. I was never happier to see a newspaper stand with overpriced Duracells. Ever since then I've religiously charged and packed my batteries whenever I go anywhere but in the back of my mind there's that little voice, "what if you run out?".

But half the point of a Pentax is that people don't notice it!
(semi-serious, but I'm not one for flashy gear and the Pentax line seems to suit that just fine)

That's what I used to do with this lens on my K5ii, but on the K1 it doesn't work. Either the K1 doesn't like this lens or the lens contacts have gone bad.

On the upside, I do shoot a lot of portrait (the orientation, not the genre) and it'd be nice to have an AA battery option for emergencies.
On the downside, money.
So, grip users: do you feel the K-1 benefits from having it?

Yep, that FA 50/1.4 seems to work.
(minor white balance tweak in LR, otherwise straight from the camera)

6 hours to go at work. I packed the 35/2.8 and 50/1.4, a 32G card and the battery's sitting in the charger on my desk, so at least I'll be ready to shoot once I punch out for the day :-D |
