Pentax K70 Continuous shooting mode problem

Thanks for your replies

I had the one in the ebay link and it worked fine with my K5. I lost it somewhere one night while doing astrophotography. I didn't have a K70 back then. The I-R sensor looks clean on the K70, i may buy a different infra-red remote and try that.

The remote I use now is this one

MaxsimafotoŽ - IR Remote Control for PENTAX K-S1 K-S2 K50 K500 K30 K-01 K100D K110D K200D K20D K7 K5 Kr K-7 Km K-x , *istDS2, *istDS, *istDL2, *istDL, *istD, also Optio S6 S60, Optio S5z S5n S5i, Optio S4i S4, Optio SV SVi, Optio 550 555, Optio 750z,

Strange thing is I have two of those maxismafoto remotes. One of them is black, I've just tried them with the K70 and the white one doesn't work as reliably as the other. It seems the white one sets off single exposures even in continuous shooting mode. But doesn't do it everytime, maybe three times out of ten. I cleaned the infra-red sensor area on my camera, and it seems to of given the remotes more range. I swapped the batteries over in the infra-red remotes, and the white one still sets off single exposures several times, I may put in the recycling. So I'm going to use the other one, and see if it's more reliable.

Thanks for your help

Hello Kypfer

Thanks

The remote is infared that is compatible with the K70/K5 etc, and I have to be really close to the front of the camera (a couple of inches) for it to work.

I've tried the same remote with my K5 at the same time when I had them both running, and it works fine. I've never had any problems with the continuous remote shooting on my K5.

Pentax K70 Continuous shooting mode problem

Hello

I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar problem to this.

When using my Pentax K70 in continuous shooting mode with wireless remote, the camera doesn't always take a series of shots. Instead it will take a single shot when I press the remote. But without altering any any settings, if I press the remote again it will sometimes take another single shot, or start taking the series of shots as it's supposed to. It will then keep taking the shots untill the battery is low, or sometimes it will stop after a few shots. It seems to make no difference if I use a fully charged battery or not. Every other shooting mode seems to work as it's supposed to. The lens is in manual focus as is the camera. I've turned off chromatic abb and distortion correction.

Thanks

K70 Live View for Astrophotography

I find zooming the lens in and using focus peaking helps. Some zoom lenses will go out of focus, if you zoom in to get focus and then zoom out.So If I'm using a long zoom I find a focal length to use, and set the lens at that length, and then find focus with live view and focus peaking.
And obviously using the zoom function in live view, with the OK button and wheel dial to zoom in.

It's very low to the horizon now, you may have a chance in the evening. It's fairly close to Venus at dusk in the south- west.

I used 300mm lens and Astrotracer certainly helped. I found It's not very reliable though, sometimes it won't track.

Yes this is what I tried, I have a velbon D7000 tripod. The tripod is quite old and the pan arm fell off a while ago. It's a fairly sturdy tripod for astro, as I'm only using a DSLR and lens. I attached my K70 to the tripod, with the legs retracted, then did the calibration and it functioned ok. I did this in my garden.

Yesterday I was out around 4 miles from town in a rural area. I tried to calibrate my camera in the various menus, and by rotating around the axis. I was in the middle of a field well away from power lines buildings etc.
It said calibration was completed but it wouldn't track stars, and only allowed 10 second exposures in Astrophoto mode and Astrotracer mode. After about 12 attempts I gave up, and put the camera into manual mode. Thinking back I was calibrating the camera while it was not on the tripod.

When I returned home I put the camera on my tripod, walked out to the garden and tried the calibration again and it worked. I was able to get 10 seconds zoomed to 260mm without obvious trailing. And one at 20 seconds with slight trails.

So when it calibrates and works it's pretty good, but as mentioned by other people it is a bit hit and miss. One thing I've found is having the camera on the tripod, makes calibration a bit smoother
and maybe safer.

Tried something I hadn't before tonight,
I calibrated the Astrotracer with my camera on the tripod. It was a bit awkward, but I felt less likely to drop the tripod, rather than calibrating the camera by itself. Firstly I calibrated the GPS in the wrench menu, then calibrated the astrotracer in the astrotracer menu. I was then able to use the bulb mode, instead of the user mode 3 astrophoto. I did this in the back garden. Next time I'm out of town trying astro, I will use the calibrate on the tripod method.

Yeah when I used my K70 the other day , I drove a few miles from town to get darker skies. I made sure I was a good twenty feet from the car when I calibrated the Astrotracer. I expect telephone cables or underground cables may effect the GPS too.

We had a fair area of undeveloped land by my area. Unfortunately there is ALOT of new buildings going up, this will create alot more light pollution nearby.

I guess it's the same world over, it's getting harder to find dark skies nearby.

Hi thanks for replying

Yes I tried all the menu settings, and calibrating the GPS then the Astrotracer . I was able to get good shots in the Astrophoto mode, so I will stick with that unless I can work out the other modes. Sometimes the Astrotracer just doesn't play ball maybe it's the signal, or interference from metallic objects.

Hi Mike

It's getting brighter, and will be near the bright orange star Arcturus on Dec 6th in the east.

Best time to look is the hours 2am- dawn if your in the northern hemisphere.

We had clear skies last week, but a near full moon too.
Despite the moonlight I captured this photo of comet Leonard from my backyard. Two galaxies can also be seen, the whale galaxy, and hockey stick.

This is 12x20 seconds exposures at 300mm with the Pentax 55-300 HD WR zoom on a static tripod.
I had 28 frames but deepskystacker only chose 12. I used light frames, no darks flats etc.

Processed in rawtherepee and faststone.

Good photo , I took a shot like this last week when the moon was almost full.

I used a K70 and it does make it ALOT easier with the Flippy spinny screen. You don't have to lay on the ground, like I have done before try to see the LCD!

I've had problems with astrotracer on the K70, I can only get it to work with the pre installed Astrophoto mode. The astrotracer doesn't track stars for me in bulb or manual.

However I managed to get 20 seconds exposures at 300mm very little star trailing in Astrophoto mode.

I Hope for more clear skies to get another try at comet Leonard.

Regards

I can't get my K70 to use Astrotracer in Bulb or manual mode. I do the calibration and make sure the GPS is on etc. I may try getting out of town to see if it's a GPS problem.

The only way I can get any success is with the user3 mode Astrophoto. I can get 20 seconds without startrailing with the 55-300 HD WR lens at 300mm.
I turned off noise reduction in this mode as I wanted the RAW files unedited.
I may try turning the inbuilt noise reduction on again, to see how the jpgs turn out for stacking.

With my K5 I can use the Astrotracer in Bulb mode, and use a remote to open/close the shutter as needed. It seems more straight forward with the K5.

Another good lens for astro/landscapes is the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 xr. I use this lens on a K5, it does everything nicely.

Hi all,

Do the K70 drive modes include Remote Continuous Shooting? I use this on my K5 for Meteor showers and lightning. This mode is great because the shutter is only closed briefly between frames, unlike the intervalometer when the shutter is closed I may miss a shot. This is a screen from a K3, couldn`t `find a K5 screen.

Thanks for your help everyone, as mentioned above if the card is not recognised by the computer, it`s not able to recover any photos. I thought it was worth asking as their may of been someone who had a similar fault.;)

I did try the Transcend's RecoverRX but kept getting error msg, that i need to save to a different disc.(your saved path is identical to your recovery disk) I tried disc C then D and making new folders, it still doesn`t get past step 2 in the setup. It has not detected the memory card so....

Ok i plugged in an external HDD to recover files from the memory card, the software still cant find the memory card so at least i tried a few options.

thanks again

That is a neat setup, do you have to take the whole thing outside to get your`e photos?. In the south of the UK it is usually to mild to get any snow crystals before they melt. We did get -13c yesterday though.
