Jims seems to have logged out. Right, here goes: Who would have thought "The Thread" would have made it to 100,000 posts?

So, today, we remember our friends who are no longer with us. Firstly, Rupert, who actually went by Jim. James Williams was a regular poster here and often regaled us with some really funny life stories. And a few pretty serious life stories. Jim passed away on 19 December 2017. Jim / Rupert often shared tales from a squirrel's perspective and Otis, Festus and the other squirrels. Due to that, you'll see "The Otis Appreciation Society" badges from time to time, with some of our regular members.

James Williams (Rupert)

And then there was Bob Correll, who was our resident Weber BBQ expert. Bob was likewise a regular contributor here. He passed away on 31 March 2022.
Bob had a collection of Weber BBQs and was an all round nice guy.

Bob Correll

Both are sorely missed.

Pentax in space! - DA* 300mm as the shooting lens for the 6U Cube Sat "KITSUNE"

The news is only on the Japanese Ricoh Imaging site.

As the title says, the DA* 300mm f/4 has been selected as the shooting lens for the 6U Cube Sat satellite "KITSUNE".
The selected lens had to have a metal barrel (no outgas from plastics), a high resolution of 5m from 400km, and to have a compact design.
Not bad, for a consumer lens launched in 2008!

How would you describe a hand-built Art Deco digital clock with a walnut veneer surround, inlaid lapis lazuli base, 18ct gold controls and no battery?

Timeless.

Makes sense. The gram counters among hikers usually estimate a factor of 5 for extra weight on their feet compared to weight carried on their body. Your boots have a start-lift-stop motion for each step while your body moves mostly in one direction at close to constant speed.

Your cartoon really hits home for me.
Several of my customers were gram counters. I had a scale in the shop and a few (very few) were anal enough that they'd hang their bike on it every single time they came in despite having changed nothing on it.
One of them was an absolute fitness freak. Hardcore runner, swimmer, cyclist. He had bought from me one of the lightest, and consequently most expensive bikes I had access to. He came in one day and wanted me to order and install a new crankset/bottom bracket set which, according to specs, would lighten his bike by about 120 grams. $360.00 for parts, $60.00 for labor. He was an attorney so money wasn't his primary concern. A few days later I called to let him know it was done.
We had weighed it when he brought it in and I wrote the weight on the work ticket. When he came to pick it up he immediately hung it on the scale and the look on his face was unbelievable. A combination of confusion, disappointment, and anger. The bike was about 3 ounces heavier. That's when I calmly took the bike off of the scale, pulled the seatpost out and removed the section of lead shot filled inner tube I'd dropped in the seat tube. To comply with forum rules I won't post what he said. :D

Actually, haggis are subject to export licensing, something to do with the species being endangered due to over-shooting on moorland during the past two winters in the Highlands. Nothing else to do while lockdowns were in force. :(

During a rather heated discussion in 2016 I was on the receiving end of a temporary ban on these forums: I'm not questioning the decision, but the description justifying the ban was hilarious:

Of course I screen-capped it, I wanted do savor my badge d'Honneur.

Not really sure this is the right spot to post this so please move this to the appropriate if I'm in the wrong place.

TL;DR: Met a former Pentaxian and retired wedding photographer at my son's soccer game. He ended up using my camera to get shots of players for the game. He took the SD card home so he can do some PP and will return it to me at the next game. I made a new friend :)

I was at my son's soccer game this evening and generally I'm there to support my son and his team. Tonight I decided to bring my camera with a few lenses in hopes of getting some decent shots because my fiance wanted some photos of our son playing. I don't own anything past 200mm(K200), don't own a monopod, and most of my lenses are manual focus. I was going to try anyway. I do get on field access since I provide food and snacks for the players and coaches.

So tonight I was asked to work the scoreboard since I have done it before and no one else was available. I was a little bummed, but hey I got the best view for the game out of the cold. I kept my camera bag with me since I could go down at half time and get some shots of the coach talking with the players. When I got up to the booth, there was an older gentleman there getting ready to head out since the girls' game had just ended. He noticed camera bag and asked what I was shooting with. So I told him a Pentax K-s2 with a few lenses. He looked sort of surprised and told me he hadn't met anyone that used Pentax since he retired 15 years ago and that he hasn't used a Pentax since the 90s. He told me he was a retired wedding photographer that shoots mainly landscape now. We chatted for a few minutes and he told me was happy people still use Pentax before he left. About 10 minutes before the game started he returned and told me his granddaughter wanted to stay and watch the boy's game so he came back to the booth to get out of the cold.

He then told me I could go down and shoot the boys since he was staying. I pulled everything out of my bag and was deciding what I was going to use. I planned on swapping between my FA43 and my Nikkor 105. He saw my A*85 and told me I didn't know what I had. He asked me if I knew what I had, so I told him am just an amateur and would be more than happy to stay in the booth if he wanted to take my camera and whatever lenses he wanted down and shoot. I have not seen someone so happy in a long time. During the game he was all over the place getting shots. Towards the end of the game he returned to the booth to ask if he could take the SD card home for PP since he shot in RAW and would return it at the next game. He also told me he if I ever had extra free time he would be more than happy to teach me how to get the most out of my equipment and how to get better with PP since I'm still a noob. I made a new friend in a new city :) I love this hobby and regret stepping away for as long as I did!

Last week I said my fence got blown down. Yesterday the weather was pleasant, no rain and no strong wind, and reasonable temperature. I went out and stood the fence back up and drilled a few holes and tied it all together with wire. Hopefully ti will hold together until we get our extension to the house done, perhaps a year away, which would result in changes to the fence. It was a rather agricultural repair.

Taken back in October. I was originally out here to do a sunset landscape shot over the lake, which ended up being a complete flop, but I did get these two shots.

Both are K3II and DA*300/4 + 1.4TC.
