This might be the oldest dated negative in my family archive: a 9 x 12 cm glass plate, dated June 1900.

I mentioned this image in a post early Dec.

This is a cabinet card of my Grandfather. He was born late 1883, so this must be late1884 or early 1885. I'm not sure how this image came about, since he was never in England as far as I know. (His name was handwritten on the card, which I have removed.)

The oldest family photos we have are tintypes from New York State in the 1860's, of Rubbins family ancestors who emigrated from England in the 1850's. Some of the tintypes I have in my possession I can date with certainty to 1861. I have studio photos for three of my four 2nd great-granduncles who served with the Union. This is one of the younger brothers who did not survive the Battle of Fredericksburg.

Unedited scan of tintype removed from the case, Vuescan on a Canon 9000F.

What's the oldest negative or picture you have? This was taken from a glass plate negative taken in 1919. This is the Orange Lodge in Bancroft taken right before they had their Orange Day parade through Maynooth, Ontario.

My grandfather was an avid photographer from the 1930´s onwards. I have lots of his shots, both prints and glass plate negatives. I even have the camera he used for taking those.
In this picture we have my grandparents with their two sons, and grandpa´s motorcycle in the early 30´s.

This is a photo taken May 1, 1913 of the (Canadian Parliament) Press Gallery Baseball Team. My paternal Grandfather was a member of the press gallery and is second from the left. (I have a photo taken of him from 1885-1886 at 3 years old, but I cannot find the scan. I will post it later in the week.)

Scan from a tiny print 2.3x1.4 inches which was probably a contact print rather than an enlargement, possibly from Kodak 121 film which was 1 5/8th x 2 1/2th inches. Subject is the WW 1 seaplane base at Calshot, Southampton, England dated 1918.

My Great Grandfather at rear left in 1914, with his three brothers and their mother -- my Great Great Grandmother. Before the war Great Grandad was head footman to the Rani of Sarawak, but he volunteered in the first month of the confilct, served as a sniper, and somehow survived the whole thing. Whether any of his brothers made it through, I'm not sure. At some point along the way he was wounded and met this young nurse while recovering back in England:

Yep, the nurse ended up as my Great Grandmother. She came from rather a lofty family but volunteered as a nurse like many young ladies of the upper class, and it caused quite a scandal at the time when she eloped with an ex-servant of all things. But of course, as a former head footman to royalty, Great Grandad had no trouble at all mingling with the posh folk.:)

After a green Christmas and New Year's cold temperatures have finally arrived in southern Ontario so once again I can capture some beautiful snow crystals while freezing my butt off :)

Here's the first one for this year. Shot using a Nikon E 4X/0.10 160/- finite objective.

IMGP4136 by Fred Widall, on Flickr

This one is the same crystal shot with a Nikon MPlan 40X 0.65 DIC 210/0 objective. I took 13 exposures adjusting the focus point by a few microns each time. I then combined them using the 'Focus Merge' option in Affinity Photo 2. The image is uncropped so FOV is approx 0.6mm. Amazing detail from an objective which cost me US$30!!

IMGP4140 by Fred Widall, on Flickr

My setup is basically the same as last year.

Swapping 50-135mm SDM power contact to 150-450mm

Hi all, just thought it would be useful to let people know about something I just tried.

Stupidly I broke the AF contact plate on the lens mount which powers the SDM drive on my 150-450mm, one of my more expensive lenses and one of my favourites, I was mortified. I had read about old power zooms being switchable with some adaptation, but don't own one. What I do own is a 50-135mm with a knackered SDM drive that I converted to screw drive. So I thought I might as well give it go and see if I could take the contact plate off and swap it with the broken one on my 150-450mm.

Sure enough it was a straight swap! The 150-450 is now working perfectly again, and I even popped the broken contact back on the 50-135 just to fill the gap. Both lenses behave exactly as they did before without issue, albeit for the 50-135 with the screw drive. Pics attached for reference so you can see the part I switched in case you have any doubt. No doubt many of us have screwdrive converted SDM lenses so will have a nice little backup ready should anything happen to a working SDM drive.

My 16-50 SDM is about to die so I'll no doubt shortly have another spare!

Cheers all, and merry xmas!

Rich

For me I think the answer lies in between, so I didn't vote.

Generally I view photography as a hobby. I'm trying to have fun and relax while doing it, I don't put a lot of work into it and I don't actively try to get better at it. But still there were some moments when I felt photography helped me to connect to the world around me in a more intimate way, so I would like to share couple of pictures and their stories.

The picture below was meticulously planned. I spent a few hours on Google Maps trying to find a nice spot, using all kinds of software to predict where the light will be coming from at sunset, based on the exact date and time of the year. Then, a few hours before sunset I went outside and actually managed to find the exact specific spot that I had identified on Google Maps. It was kinda of a remote spot at the end of an old, abandoned pier, on the shore of Lake Corrib. An hour before sunset time, I was all set up, tripod in position, composition already figured out and now just chilling and waiting for the sunset, hoping that the amazing light that is often seen in Ireland won't let me down. Then, to my surprise, an old lady appeared out of nowhere. We exchanged a few words and she told me she used to come to this exact spot when she was a kid, to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, she would not be able to do so this time. She was now living in another country and she had a plane to catch. Of course, I got her covered. Asked for her email address, wished her a safe journey and a few days later sent her the picture below via email. She liked it a lot, the sunset was indeed spectacular. And I do keep sending her pictures from Galway, whenever I feel I managed to capture something worthy.

Lake Corrib Sunset by Hattifnattar, on Flickr

The next shot was also planned. At first, I noticed the dim light at the end of the stairs, and for some reason I envisioned a woman's silhouette with a hat walking up the stairs. So I did a few test shots to get the exposure and the framing right, and then waited. And waited, And waited. A lot of people went up the stairs, some were women, but no hat. Eventually went home and came next day at the same hour, so the stalking resumed. Ironically, few meters towards the right was a a hat store. But still, my silhouette would not how up. I was too invested at this point to let this slip away, so I kept waiting, occasionally photographing other people as they passed by. It was only the third day that she finally walked in, I couldn't believe my eyes as she passed by me heading for the stairs. Some would say that my photographic will was bending space and time to bring her there, but as a geophysicist working with statistics all the time, I knew it was nothing of the sort. It was just a matter of time that it would happen, and I was just very lucky to happen sooner rather than later.

Silhouette On The Stairs by Hattifnattar, on Flickr

Next one was definitively taken with camera first. I had camera in hand and just snapped a picture of the lady in red, few streets away from my home, not thinking too much about it. It was only at home, on a bigger display when I noticed the small little detail, the cat waiting for her to come home, which makes me like this picture a lot. "Every cloud is grey, with dreams of yesterday / Come home "

Come home by Hattifnattar, on Flickr

Finally, this last picture was shot in 2014, almost ten years ago. Back then I was just starting out with photography, I didn't really know what I was doing so it was just beginner's luck. I just wanted to take the picture of the nice lady sitting in front of me at the table, I didn't know her so I thought taking some pictures would maybe help me start a conversation. I didn't even notice the action in the background which makes it a cool picture, as I realized later. Now, I do think this is one of my best candid shots. Then, in a surprising turn of events, last year I've found out that the couple kissing in the background are actually two of my friends! I didn't know them at that time, they recognized themselves when I accidentally showed them this picture. Does photography connect us through time, so many years later?

Background Kissing by Hattifnattar, on Flickr

So I really don't know what goes first, heart or camera. I'll just keep going taking pictures when I feel like it and see where this goes. I'll leave you with the wonderful lyrics of Rainer Maria Rilke:
"Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final"

HD Pentax-D FA 24-70mm F2.8 ED SDM WR - repair

I finally got the courage to try to repair the tiny traces on the board that has the connections that the spring loaded nubs connect to the camera body.
The person who had this and tried to repair it before me put a screw in that was too long and destroyed 3 traces.

Spent about 2 hours just repairing the traces as it is extremely hard to hold single wires strands in place.
The one on the left had to be redone as it desoldered and stuck to the soldering iron when I went to solder the middle one.

Top pic is broken traces.
Bottom pic is the repaired traces. The wire strands are about as thick as 2 human hairs. Four of those traces side by side with the space in between them on the board measure right at 1/16 inch.
The repair was done with no magnification assistance. Thought about it, but it would have just gotten in the way.

Now I just need to clean the left over flux out of the gouge, then fill the gouge with epoxy and also make a supporting metal plate for the back because the board was flexed and cracked, make sure it doesn't interfere with anything, and then glue it to the back of the board.

Nerves are shot.

Here are some of the last of the desert scenery pics from Namibia.

This pano is from several panels taken with the 645z + P67 200mm lens in the late afternoon.

I printed a +/- 3m x 1m print for the one wall in the living room and I light it up with two spots. Visitors come into our home, stop talking and start staring at the wall. It looks like a window overlooking this scenery. As you get closer to the picture it draws you in more and more. Fun to watch...

This is a view half way up a dune at Sussusvlei called Elim Dune, looking eastward. We always ignored this turn-off until our last day, we decided to see what is there. The initial impression was a bit 'hmmmm' but the combination of the late afternoon light, clouds, and the results of the recent rains changed it to a 'I-must-have-that' kind of view. Although on Flickr the resolution is limited plus Chrome is also limiting the resolution it can display it is still impressive, in my view :-)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

and a crop of the centre part of the picture, this is the part people walk up to the first time, then they start to explore with their noses up against the canvas...

---------- Post added 2023-08-18 at 06:13 PM ----------

I have become quite comfortable with manual focus after ditching my split-focus focus screen and going back to the stock focus screen. It is bright/clear enough for me to see if details are in focus or just off. it took some practice because I was addicted to autofocus and the split-focus support, but I eventually got it to an acceptable level and it is fast. I dont need to touch any control to have a focus point on the view finder, I just have to look there and focus on what I see.

The whole Namibia trip was mostly manual focus at f/6.7 even for wildlife and quick actions (At f/6.7 you don't get much depth of field). Most of the time I used the P67 200mm or the FA*300mm with TC1.4, all manual focus.

Once I used the 300mm with both TC1.4 and TC2.0 (==> 840mm). Pics came out so-so, but still good memories. I would have done better with the FA400 + TC2.0. But unfortunately the 400mm was not in the bag. Occasonally I also used the 300mm and the 80-160 with auto focus which I found rather annoying, most of time in getting a compositon was spent on focussing. I hardly ever shoot with a tripod so I am moving as fast as I think is needed and able. With the 300mm and beyond I use a monopod.

---------- Post added 2023-08-18 at 06:23 PM ----------

I also removed the Flickr links on the pictures. Can you please test to see the pictures show for post #19804?

I've been dusting off my old 35mm stuff, and I found this pic just now, in a box of old test prints. Scanned it on my old HP OfficeJet combo fax/scanner/printer. (Had to power up my old PowerBook G4 to get the HP to work.) Obscured the image a bit using the Photos app in my MacBook Pro.

I was a student photographer in my undergraduate university's Office of Sports, News, and Information in the mid-1970's. I took this self-portrait one day for some reason in the Office's darkroom. I am barefoot, so I must have been working (rather than playing), as this is how I worked long sessions. I am almost certain I used my personal Spotmatic F for this, and it seems I used a lens slightly wider than normal. (I've only ever owned "primes"--though this term wasn't in the photographers' lexicon at that time, IIRC.) Anyway, I am not sure why I didn't discard this and the other test prints, but here it is, for your entertainment!
