Pentax MX film advance problem

As far as I remember, I always paid attention to not press the release button in while carrying the camera. Never before, nor since had I such a problem. Or if I had, I didn't notice it. :D I don't know, but just trying the camera unloaded doesn't reveal any errors.

Pentax MX film advance problem

Greetings!

I took out my MX for a shooting. I shot a roll of Vista 200, then a roll of Fuji C200. Afterwards a week later I also shot a roll of Ilford Pan 100. The first and last rolls turned out just perfect. However, the Fuji got wasted midway: around the 13th frame apparently the film got off the advance spool or something, because from the 13th frame onwards, all subsequent shots were exposed on a single frame, essentially making it one huge multi-exposure. This wasn't intended of course. The roll of Ilford afterwards however, turned out perfect. I can't figure out, what could have happened. The film was not ripped, although I had just one harder frame advance midway. It happened before too, but never had any consequences. Any ideas, anyone? It would be appreciated.

Aperture control problems with variable aperture lenses (with aperture rings)

Dear Pentax Users!

I have a problem regarding variable aperture zooms, particularly lens with an aperture ring and an A setting, KAF mount.
(More precisely: my Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and my Vivitar Series 1 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5)

Here's what I noticed:
When I have my tamron at the 70mm end and set the aperture on the body to f/8 and use DoF preview, I get the appropriate aperture. When I do so at the 300mm end, I do NOT get the appropriate setting physically. The aperture is more open, than it should be. How do I know? If I use the aperture ring instead and set it to f/8, it is constant throughout all the way to 300mm and does not vary a tiny bit.
Similar is the problem with my Vivitar wide-angle zoom. Except, that lens does not even set the aperture properly, which is a fault of its' kind, but that is well known. So you have to compensate for it by using EV compensation. (-1 EV)

On the tamron, using the body vs the aperture ring, the ring does always set the aperture two stops from wide open, regardless of the zoom setting. When using the body however, using setting f/8 at the 300mm end is only about one stop.

Is this behavior normal or is there a problem with the aperture control in the body?

Pentax K10D aperture control lever problem

Update: It CAN be compensated by setting the aperture setting about a stop higher than the desired one. For example setting around f/11 - f/13 gives the desired aperture opening of f/8, which is just fine for just about anything. So it's no catastrophe, one just has to pay attention.

Thanks!

The aperture blades look like new, although when it's 5.6, the iris isn't centered, looks somewhat downwards looking. It goes away by f/8.
The motion seems fine, though I'll check further in the evening.
I did check this one and even unmounted while checking the DoF preview. Without lens, it was fine, but it stopped halfway with a lens mounted. (there wasn't any resistance when unmounting, so I didn't damage it)
I'm guessing that this might be an electric problem. Although the Tokina has a similar problem, that too is somewhat solved by using an EV comp. of about -0.7 or -1.0. But than again, that only solves the shutter speed.

Pentax K10D aperture control lever problem

Greetings, Dear Pentax Users!

I have a Pentax K10D. I just got myself a Vivitar Series 1 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. I noticed, that in Av mode, when I set the aperture to f/8.0 on the body, it only stops it down to about f/5.6. This is regardless of zoom position. This is a KAF mount lens. The lens stops down properly in M mode with green button metering, the viewfinder darkens accordingly as well. However in Av mode, it doesn't work properly. I just had a full day of shooting with this lens attached to my Pentax MX and all was well. I was using the aperture ring then. I came to the conclusion, that using this lens by aperture ring is the way to go, it works well. However it's quite disturbing. It either means there's a mechanical problem, or there is one in the firmware of the camera. This isn't he first lens, with which this problem occurs: I had a sigma P&P lens too, which also gave me overexposed pictures. So does my Tokina 28-70 MF lens. I highly doubt, that all of these lenses are faulty, since they (with the Sigma's exception) work perfectly on my MX. I'm thinking that it my be my good 'ol K10D, which is acting up.

Any ideas about the nature of the problem?

Chinese M42 adapter turns over

Thanks Steve!

Mine unmounts fairly easily, even in the wrong position and it's not that hard to mount it either. If it would, I wouldn't dare screw around with it. (assuming I use the given removal tool)

It works, at least. With the removal tool, it's not hard to remove either.
But I think I'll try another type in time. Until then, I'll manage with this. If I don't mount it improperly, it is pure hell, unusable. It makes the lens turn, with the bayonet or the screw, instead of the focusing ring. Therefore I'll mostly use this on the MX and if I need digital, I'll jusr mount the Helios upside down.

As I said, on that photo, I put it in incorrectly on purpose! When I align it with the red dot, like it should be, it goes in fine and looks good. Then I screw in the lens, tighten it then I hear I click and it turns over, but it shouldn't be able to! I end up with a lens upside down! Therefore I put in the adapter incorrectly (see image) and turned it all the way I could, until it clicked in. This way I can almost properly mount the lens. (turned a little bit to the left, still...) Surprisingly, when mounted incorrectly, it doesn't unmount like when it's mounted correctly. This is a crappy adapter I guess.

So one of you said that the DSLRKit version would work and mount correctly? If yes, then I may get my hands on one in time...

Thanks!

The pin is perfectly aligned where it should be. So it's a problem with the thread. That and the fact that:

1) I can mount the adapter at least two ways. (as intended and upside down)

2) When screwed on the lens, the red dot should align with the red mark on the lens perfectly. It does however not. (see attachment)

Shots of the lens on my K10D.

I put on the adapter the wrong way now, on purpose. Why? Because this way it clicks into place and I can only remove the adapter with the given tool. Therefore it doesn't over rotate. If I put it in aligned with the red dot, it turns over, because of the lack of aperture lever. Also funny is the fact that no matter which way I put the adapter on, the lens doesn't align in the center, but rather in either on the left or right... Quite funny, if you ask me.

Thanks for all the answers!

I've meant a flangeless in reality. :) I have one that sits in the mount.
Now I've been taking a few photos of the situation and it's really quite funny.
On the MX, the lens focuses to infinity and is usable perfectly, BUT it's center is far off from the camera's, meaning the lens is over rotated.

As you can see on the attached images, the adapter fits perfectly and mounts the lens as well, but incorrectly. (even though it's perfectly useable)

I also made a few shots of the K10D... I'll insert those in another post...

Chinese M42 adapter turns over

Greetings!

I finally got myself a Helios 44M 2/58 lens, which is M42 screw mount. I also just got a chinese flanged adapter with infinity focus, to use it with.
Now I can easily install the adapter on my K10D, but when I screw on the lens and try to tighten it, it turns over almos a half turn. I've checked with my Pentax MX too and the problem is digital-only, as the aperture lever on the MX's body prevents it from turning over. This means that I can use my Helios on the MX just fine, but I would need another type of adapter for my K10D, one that properly clicks in place and doesn't turn either way. Any tips for an M42 beginner?

Help is much appreciated!

Sigma ZOOM K-III 75-210mm f/3.5-4.5 - aperture randomly gets stuck open

Greetings!

I have the aforementioned lens in quite a nice condition. It looks near mint. I've used it on multiple occasions on my K10D, with great results. I really liked it. But one day it started to happen: regardless of the aperture setting, sometimes when shooting stopped down (eg anything other than wide open) the aperture got stuck wide open when shooting, resulting in overexposed / useless pictures. This was completely random and I could often reproduce it with DOF preview. Now all it does is sit in it's case, because it's useless this way. Now that I also shoot an MX, it would be superb to use it however.
Does anyone have an idea how to fix it? I'm not afraid at this point to take it apart if I have to. If only I knew what to look out for, what to fix...

I'm guessing, that my favourite 50, the Auto Chinon MC 50mm f/1.4 has a radioactive element as well. It's getting a bit more yellowish... I just have to look through the viewfinder to notice. Even though it's an 80's lens, it's been hinted on several forums, that it may be radioactive. I only found out recently. But this has been my favourite lens and my first prime as well... and now that I shoot an MX too, this is my go-to lens.

Pentax K10D with split focusing screen - various questions
Posted By gtxSeries

Greetings!

I have a K10D with a microprism/horizontal split focusing screen installed. It's not as finely crafted as a Pentax original... a little-bit rougher, has a little bit more gap between the upper-and-lower parts than the one in my MX. However it's quite usable.I got the screen as a gift from a friend of mine, so I can't be sure of the origins. It came in a little red plastic box. I found great joy in its' use, since I have a few legacy glass... and before I had my Pentax MX, it was my best choice for a manual focusing camera. It really makes focusing a breeze!
However over time I found that it brought up various issues.
First and foremost: when using it with an autofocus lens to test accuracy, it seems that its' accuracy varies when I adjust the dioptier on the camera. I wear glasses (-1,75 on my dominant right eye, -1,25 on the left). If I set the diopter all the way to the right, then the inner readings are perfectly razor sharp... but the alignment of the prism shifts a little, so I have to take it two steps back. What could be the reason? This of course also affects somehow, how accurately different lenses focus manually. Now how to determine how to calibrate the diopter correctly?

The second is if it could be causing back-focus. I just got myself a DA 35mm f2.4 lens third hand for cheap. The lens itself is great, using it with MF is perfectly accurate... more accurate than AF. Could the split focusing screen be affecting its' focusing accuracy? The lens is perfectly sharp, but it doesn't focus perfectly when wide open - it back focuses.

The third is if could affect metering? Only on one lens though: my Tokina SZ-X SD II 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 seriously overexposes... about one stop with this lens. More so closer to the longer end. Or could this be because it's only a KA mount lens with a variable aperture?

These are small technical questions which have been bothering me for a while. I've been using my K10D with the split screen for about half a year now. I've yet to take it for a test drive with the original screen. But some insight on such details would be welcome!

Using UV filters for lens protection.

My suggestion: forget the crappy UV filters, get a metal or plastic lens hood for ALL your lenses. The proper shape for each of them. Forget the clip-on and rubber ones! Get ones that will firmly sit on your lens. That way, if you drop your camera by accident, it can be the difference between life and death. I just recently dropped my K10D with a 18-55 kit lens and it was only thanks to the lens hood, that only the hood got damaged!

On the other hand, UV filters WILL degrade image quality and introduce additional flaring. Especially cheap ones! There's also the fact that SMC coatings better repel dust and moisture than cheap UV glass. Cheers!

Using M42 -> K mount adapter

Greetings!

I've been having my eye on M42 lenses for a while and I would like to get myself a cheap Helios for the swirly BOKEH. Now there's many-many types adapters floating around. I don't want a genuine pentax, if possible, simply because it's not cheap. I'm looking to get a good third party one.

I have my eyes on this: Pentax M42 42mm to PK K Mount Adapter Infinity focus | eBay

Is this a type that works well, or there are other things I should look out for?

As far as I know, I need M42 lenses with a manual diaphragm and I can use both M mode with stop down metering, or plain Av mode if I set the aperture beforehand. I have a split screen in my K10D to help focusing.
However I have no idea how these M42 babies work with my Pentax MX.

Any tips for a beginner?

Help is much appreciated!

My first roll is a complete success! Only one wasted shot, which I shot by accident.
By the way, the MX gives me an extra frame: it starts at 0 and finishes at 36. I was surprised at the lab. :) Now if I could load it in the dark...

My second roll is AGFA APX 400, which is in the lab. I'm excited!
