Manual lens not working with K-3 II

Hi everyone,

I have purchased this lens (SMC Pentax 50mm F1.2 Reviews - K Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database) on eBay to use it with my K-3 II.

When mounted, the F-- is blinking all the time and the shutter cannot be released in any shooting mode.

Am I missing something here? How can I make this lens work with my camera?

What looks overexposed on the camera, has a right side clipping histogram on the computer, in Lightroom or ACR.

To Buy or Not: My F*300 vs new DA*300

I've never tried any of the F lenses, but I've recently got the DA* 300/4 and of course I've put it to the BIF test right away with my K-3 II, just out of curiosity since that seems to be the preferred focus speed test for tele's.
I'm not gonna start a fire here by comparing this to other similar lenses+cameras combos from other brands, but since this is my first Pentax camera I do have more terms of comparison and probably reasons to put on a smile...or not.
The DA* is definitely on the slow side of focus performance, though surprisingly silent. My first shooting session made me think it is much better suited for wildlife, where silence is crucial....IF the camera would only have a more silent shutter too.
Surprisingly for some, I have not purchased this lens for BIF, but for portraiture, a particular type, since I shoot a lot of variety shows. And for that purpose, the lens is actually better than what the camera can deliver. I'm talking chaotic lights (dazzles the Auto WB), high ISOs, high fps and shutter speeds starting from 1/300. Add a very limited buffer and a slow writing speed on the card and you get (well, I do) that feeling that you were better off with one of the big names.
Still, apart from the slow focusing speed and maybe it's size and weight, there's not much to complain about this lens. It does a great job and there's only that much you can ask when the flagship APSC camera can't keep up with it.

All images are visibly on the bright side, nothing is "neutral" in the camera's default output, JPG or RAW.

I've been blaming the software immediately myself. Still , I don't recall seeing such a difference in histogram display at JPG or RAW files from Fuji X100-T, Canon 5D mkII, Canon 5d mkIII and Canon 7D mk II, which I've been rolling thru this version of Lightroom.

I'll read the K-3 II manual again, maybe there are some settings regarding the metering system that need adjustment.

Ken Rockwell and K3II

Actually, Canon has the best interface, button placement, and menu order and navigation. But that's only valid for the new generation of cameras, meaning anything after 70D for APSC and anything after 6D for full frame.

More like because it isn't the best APSC camera ever. Every brand has a similar camera with different features, it's all about what you think you need or what you enjoy most. I prefer the color dynamic and image quality over focus accuracy and speed. Canon 7D mk II has stellar performance in AF system, something that makes my K-3 II look like a camera from the last decade. Pentax has the advantage of in-camera SR, and almost catches up to that. Nikon has better image quality overall, if we leave out K-3 II's pixel shift technology, which in real shooting is useless, unless the subject is completely still. Pentax again has the advantage of being able to use spectacular glass, made 20 - 30 years ago, at unbeatable prices + SR!!

See, he's not that bad :)

Correct.

Rockwell has proven numerous times to have self contradicting ideas in the same review. It's not unusual. It is actually very hard to form a coherent, unbiased idea about a product in this field, especially when you are trying to review as many brands as you can, so you can please as many readers as possible.

Real testing takes a lot of time and resources, and no one does that for free, unless they do it superficially. And that's exactly what Rockwell's review on the K-3 II is: superficial.

A guy like Thom Hogan for instance, reviews Nikon cameras only, and very few third party lenses for Nikon. His opinions are clearly based on long hours of shooting in all environments and conditions. Rockwell lost that advantage and he's relying mostly on his shooting taste and experience to form opinions about cameras that he only sees or shoots for a brief time. Not very professional if you ask me, but the guy is trying to make a living.

He's been a Nikon fanatic for decades, until he discovered Canon's "50 shades of gray", then he started to write positive reviews on Canon cameras. He's still in love with film, which is something worthy of respect from my point of view, and he has some of the best reviews for quite a number of old film cameras. When it comes to film, if he didn't shoot a camera long enough, he won't write about it. Too bad he doesn't apply the same principle to DSLRs.

I quit film and got into digital thanks to him, so I give the guy credit for that. Later on, it turned out his review on the "best APSC camera in the world" at that time, the Nikon D7000, had a lot of flaws, as I have discovered myself after using the camera for almost two years. I moved to Canon full frame, again, based on his opinions, and I wasn't disappointed at all. I just didn't like the ergonomics that much on the 5D mk II, and the focusing issues were still there, in a much smaller percentage than Nikon. Canon 7D mk II made me say WOW!! about the focusing system, but the ISO performance and overall image quality made me sell it and aim for this new Pentax :D

We'll see how this K-3 II performs in the long run. I've invested in good glass and not stopping here. I trust Pentax for their product quality, so I'm planning to enjoy the learning curve and squeeze the last drop off the camera for the upcoming year or two.

K-3 II overexposing?!?

I have noticed this from the first shots, but I wasn't worried because the histogram on the display looked perfect.

One of the things I've been looking forward to experiment on the new K-3 II was the mixed TAv shooting mode, as well as the JPG compression engine inside the camera. So I shot 99% of the first 3 - 400 shots with these setting, slightly playing with the WB or the color profiles here and there.

All the images displayed a perfect histogram on the camera, I have copied them to my computer and never checked the histogram in any photo editing software because they didn't look like they needed editing.

Recently I have shot about 1500 DNGs on a trip in the Danube delta, and I wanted to test this more thoroughly, so at first, I have enabled the highlight alert for the picture review mode. I was surprised to see that more than half the images shot in the same TAv mode, displayed a perfect histogram, but had highlight alerts flashing on the reviewed image.

I've switched to Manual mode and shot a few images with one line under - 0 + . Better results, still a few highlight alerts, although much fewer, but now the histogram indicates considerable underexposure, with the left side clipping.

Ii was now time to check the DNGs on the computer. I've opened them in Lightroom 5.7 and the histogram was way to the right / overexposure side to all the images that displayed a perfect histogram on the camera. The ones that displayed underexposure in the camera, looked good in Lightroom, with very little of the histogram cramped to the left side.

At this point I'm not sure what to make of it.

Is the camera overexposing in automatic modes? Is it a calibration issue of the metering system?

Is the display not calibrated correctly? Then why does the histogram look fine on the camera? And why so differently on the computer?

I never shoot Full Auto, so I can't tell if things are different there, but all the other semi-automatic modes give the same result.

Anyone else experiencing this issue with their K-3 II?

Thanx. I've noticed the "Special Lady" in your arsenal and I was surprised not to find a single one on eBay.co.uk on a simple search, about an hour ago.

Any other place you can think of where the 50A/1.2 can be found?

I've had the Nikkor 50/1.2 Ai-S when I was on Nikon, and I fell in love with what you can do with a large aperture like that. I'm really curious on the Pentax one, if I can find one.

Hi everyone,

I've been chewing around this forum for a while now, but now that I'm a happy owner of a K3-II, I feel like a part of the gang.

Yay!!

I've always had a weakness for Pentax cameras, yet I fell into the market's temptations as most people do, getting a Nikon D7000 for my first DSLR. Within 4 years I've switched to Canon 5D mk II and I've just got rid of my Canon 7D mk II, a couple of weeks ago, so I can get the K3-II.

I feel a special connection with the Pentax, perhaps because that was the first professional SLR I've ever seen at my cousin when I was 14 and I was doing film photos, with an improvised dark room in the bathroom and what not...

I still do film, with a Canon AE-1 Program, but I kept dreaming about Pentax.

Now I have one. Paired it up with a Sigma 18-35/1.8, a battery grip, and next week, a 70/2.4 Limited is coming my way.

I'm looking forward to find out some tips and tricks from more experienced Pentaxians around here.

Cheers everyone!!
