But patents can be sold right? So is it possible Hoya can change ownership of the patents to their own?
I'm sure Pentax under Ricoh can keep using SMC, but just it would be ironic if Pentax has to get licensed from Hoya to use their own proud SMC.

Does anyone have information on whether Pentax's patents such as the SMC etc. has been transferred to Ricoh with the recent acquisition?
I heard Hoya may have re-registered a lot of Pentax's patents to Hoya when it was under Hoya.

I definitely think Pentax should act FASTER this time.
While Olympus hasn't done any good job yet on pancake primes, and they still seems to put zooms at priority (next things come up are 9-18mm, 14-150mm). I just can't help thinking it's a great opportunity for Pentax as primes are almost the signature of Pentax. I think we are AGAIN seeing Pentax sitting there and wait until everyone else is there before they decide to put their hand on the cake.

This is definitely one that I don't understand why they removed it in the first place.
It was a bit embarrassing after my recommendation and my friend bought a K-m and found out there was no AF point.;)

I thought Olympus is much more sound to wildlife shooters because of the 2x advantage for long range shooting and lighter lens. Probably just not in there.

The original "rumour" was reports from several Japanese news agencies so it should be more than a rumour. Anyway, this is a good news. I think Pentax better stay in HOYA to continue being strong at lens making and benefit from HOYA's good financial condition. Partnering should be a good move, go talk to Fujifilm please.

If quality prime lens and good detailed images are what you are looking for, then I think Pentax is definitely a good choice for you. Pentax has done a great job on the DA*300 and DA*200 which in many tests exceed it's legendary FA* ancestors.

Samsung,高感度の新型CMOSセンサー量産へ http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/article/COLUMN/20090903/174903/
Samsung Electronics plans to put it's BSI (backside illumination) type CMOS into production by early 2010. A 1.4μm BSI CMOS can get the same image quality as if it gets from a 1.75μm FSI (front side illumination) type CMOS. It is about 30% more sensitive than the conventional FSI CMOS. The initial production will have 1460mp & 30fps and will be used on digital camera, camcorder and high end mobile phone.

I think it is because HOYA's businesses are mainly B2B and they already said that Pentax is a consumer known brand but HOYA is not. As far as the little hint that revealed to the public, the CEO doesn't seem to see the camera business profitable enough comparing to other HOYA's businesses.

Yes, the screen shot in the first post is the one actually. The last title: 黒字で事業売却? which I have already translated in the first post. Whether it is a good translation I don't know. Maybe someone here can do a better job.

100色デジカメに重い宿命 http://business.nikkeibp.co.jp/article/topics/20091002/206120/?P=1
Title: The tough fate of 100 color digital camera.
Brief translation:
Since the acquisition of Pentax, HOYA works hard on analysing the whole Pentax camera development process and tries to back in "Black". However, this does not mean HOYA wants to keep the Pentax brand. HOYA CEO said: "It's unnecessary to keep Pentax camera division in the HOYA Coporation. It may be sold to other company or become a independent company itself". |

As I can remember, the old KM 24-70 f2.8 was only around $350. This lense is almost identical except the SAM in lense motor which is not even an ultrasonic motor like its SSM lens.

I guess a smaller size body is more appealing for Asian market. While Pentax Japan emphasising more on the concept of "a small size with professional build camera", I can't see many western market based Pentax branches and reviews taking it as an revolutionary approach. As well as what I've seen on this forum, probably half of the people here feel it too small. The incredible sales of E-P1 might be an example. To me, K-7 is revolutionary that a semi-pro grade camera doesn't have to be big, in other word, the demand of a smaller camera doesn't need to compromise with lower performance or a beginner design.
