I don't use the DA 18-135 much these days. On APS-C I tend to reach for the 16-85 first. However, looking through some old shots taken with it on the K3, I can't find much to complain about. It may still be the best single-lens solution.

Tavares known as Seaplane city is a great place to see seaplane's takeoff and landings. You can also go for plane rides as I have done.

It's not the difficult at all.
Aperture remains the same when increasing or reducing focal length.
DoF increases as focal length decreases.
Learn to shoot APs-c ƒ5.6 and FF ƒ8 for "don't waste your time thinking about it" apertures. Adjust up or down according to current circumstances. Know your base setting for each format you use. Get comfortable with them. But remember each circumstance is different. If you are concerned about DoF bracket with the aperture.
There is no way to accurately determine how much DoF you need or if your focal plane is in the right place to maximize the use of the DoF. A general rule use an aperture a stop smaller than you think you need. It's rare you have too much DoF. Usually (being a measurement of light intensity,) aperture is changed only to increase shutter speed, and often to the detriment of the overall look of the photos.
There, I saved you about 3 paragraphs of pointless reading, about why it's done... it will save you doing a lot of figuring in Ian's notebook. The trick is "get in, get it done, get out".
The theoretical can go on forever. Most of us just want to get'r done as quickly and efficiently as possible. Theory is only useful for developing efficient practice. Most of us skip to the "efficient practice" part and skip the theory. Some theorists never seem to get to the important part.

I've always liked Pete's photos, especially the pet pictures, which are treated as seriously as any human portrait, including the enhanced lighting.
He explains:
"For many years I had a single flash in my bag. A few attempts at single, straight flash with no diffusion produced flat images and the flash went back in the bag for another few years. About six years ago I decided to conquer my flash demons and learn how to use it properly. Using multiple off-camera flashes with a variety of diffusers (umbrella/soft box/socked dish/snoot) will transform any portrait or indoor scene. These days there is a wealth of information on the web, and of course with digital cameras we can see our results instantly, and adjust the lighting as necessary to get the picture we want, rather than the picture we are stuck with." https://pentaxphotogallery.com/peterschluter |

The coasts of Normandy & Brittany are a goldmine of photographic opportunities. The mix of natural landscapes and the work of man, together with the ever-moving Atlantic skies, makes for a truly unbeatable combination. Can't wait to be back this November for more!
Here four images in colour from these spectacular coasts, all shot in 2021 with my Phase One XT, IQ4 and various Rodenstock lenses:
Sunset at Etretat, 3 min 30 sec, Rodenstock HR Digaron 4/50mm
Etretat at dusk, 8 sec, Rodenstock HR Digaron 4/32mm
Man Ruz sunrise, 1 min 40 sec, Rodenstock HR 5.6/90mm
Dawn on the Cote d'Armor, 1 min 40 sec, Rodenstock HR Digaron-S 5.6/23mm
Thank you for viewing, best regards

I was traveling slowly on "Route du Mitan", Isle d'Orleans, when I saw this "tableau". Yellow always catches my gaze amd I stopped to take a picture with my new K3 III + HD DA 16-85 mm ED WR @ 75 mm FL and f/11. Most people don't see these things that would make an awesome painting in itself. The owner of the shed was nearby and seemed befuddled to see me stop and capture this beautiful image. |
