K3ii with a Tamron 17-50 2.8

That one was on the wider end, probably around 20mm and f11. I'll look it up for sure when I get home. It was an HDR done on a hiking tripod that uses my trekking poles for legs. Im fairly certain the longest exposure was in the multiple seconds long since it was taken at sunset in a valley. The spot it was taken is in the middle of the southern Sierras at my campsite on a backpacking trip.

Post was done in Lightroom for the original photo a few months ago (in the photo critique section because I felt it was missing something). Tas over there suggested black and white so I processed the rest in silver effects first then Photoshop for dodging and burning.

I had some time to work on a black and white version, inspired by Tas. I like the way it came out.

I've always loved black and white (started with B&W film in high school). Here are some recent ones from my hikes in the Sierras this year. Comments/criticism is welcome.

The more high key of the first 2 images is a new style for me, I traditionally prefer more a high contrast darker overtone similar to Ansel Adams (my photography hero). Last one is more my traditional editing style of high contrast/drama style.

I really love your edits. Especially the black and white. It's a great addition to the photo and I think I will go that route myself after seeing your edit.

Thank you

I feel like I am missing something in my post processing. I like the photo but I don't feel like the mountain stands out like it should, or maybe it's something else.

Final update. #5 got an honorable mention at the show.

I am very happy with the result, this was my first award of any kind for photography and the San Diego fair got 4,300 entries this year.

unfortunately, the print did not come out as well as I wanted and the turnaround time between the tiers of judging was too short to correct the issue. Next year for the fair I may just find a local printer so I can get it perfect. This was my first time printing this particular image and I feel it presents better on my desktop background (4k color calibrated monitor) than it did in print.

When seeing all the photos at the competition I realized the large format category was very stacked with some excellent work. Next year I think I will submit #1 under the summer category and I think it would stand a decent chance of doing well, it prints way better than it shows in digital (I have it in 24X36 on aluminum in my living room).

I used Photoshop with Topaz Remask as a plugin but you don't need that software for this, its just what I am comfortable with and what I have.

I first masked the background away from the subject and darkened the background. The main thing that bothered me about the original was on the left side of the rose there was another rose behind it out of focus but fairly bright. The subject rose was competing with the background rose for my attention. Darkening the background helps create a more 3D effect and isolates the subject.

Then I did a levels adjustment to add contrast, the main petal that shoots out at the viewer I felt needed a pure black under the petal to give it depth, so I used levels adjustment layer to get that.

Last I corrected the color with a levels adjustment for just red. I also had to back down the saturation a bit because it was too high (possibly due to the other levels adjustments I already did).

With more time I would work a bit more on my mask (its slightly off in some areas), the color still needs some work but I cant put my finger on it, lighten the stem slightly, do some dodge and burn on the petals to create a bit more depth. The petals on the back half of the rose can use a bit of darkening in the shadows. Basically the dodging and burning would be to create a similar effect to using a diffused off camera flash on the flower.

You definitely have a nice photo for a starting point.

Here is my 2 minute attempt at a fix, I darkened the background to isolate the subject and made a few levels adjustments. Still needs some more work though.

As a update. #5 got selected for the next round, the rest did not. I printed and matted it, it should be hanging at the show this year. I ended up not submitting 4 or 8

I did print #1 in 24x36 on metal and it's my new favorite print and lives in my living room.

I am a bit disappointed that only one made it into the print section of the competition but that's life.

If you want better than lightroom and are willing to buy software, I haven't seen anything beat Topaz DeNoise. I use it and it does an amazing job. I don't hesitate to take photos at 3200 with my K3ii.

I think the Green is a bit distracting. I agree with Zoe on the focus slightly off and a bit of a soft look.

To fix the green issue for me, I just made a real quick adjustment to saturation on green in lightroom and added a vignette to direct the focus to the dog rather than the background

Its getting to that time of year again and I have about 2 months before entries are due for the San Diego Fair photo contest. The Fair holds one of the largest international photo competitions. There is 2 tiers of judging, the first is digital only, then if selected you have a short time to print your photo and submit it for display. The final judging is based on the final print.

Last year I submitted 4 photos, only 1 made it to the final round. The one that did was very strong on compositional rules. From looking at the photos last year that were displayed I think this is an important factor in their judging. In fact, I found a blog from a judge in 2013 who said "The biggest offender were some incredibly static arrangements and/or a shot with important horizon separation placed right in the middle of the shot." He also said "And if the story of your shot is such that color is important (otherwise do a B&W version) then respect that color as you would (or should) respect the tonalities. Overdone HDR or simply over saturated (or undersaturated) colors are as jarring to see as the overdone sharpening that should have been solved by about the second month of your basic digital class."

I am looking for any suggestions on changes. These are generally ones I have worked on for a while and should be close to finished product if not done. I will likely drop 1-2 of these and not submit all 9, at $20 a pop it gets expensive fast, and the first one alone will be around $70-$80 to print if it gets selected.

With that said, here are my planned entries for this year and their categories. A full list of categories is here. Unless otherwise noted, the photos will be 11x15 matted to 16x20. The first 2 I am planning on putting into the large print category.

1. Large Print - Planned size is 24x36 (6888x4592)

2. Large Print - Planned size is 11X40 (9621x2730)

3 -Summer

4. Flowers

5. All other Plants and Trees (cant figure out what category to put this into.)

6. Wild Animals - Birds

7. Black and White Scenic

8. Black and White Scenic

9. Black and White People (I am the one on photo left, stage right). :D

OK, One more today. This is at Joshua Tree with my K3ii, something like 10-13 photos stitched together @ 50mm.

If anyone is having banding issues like I was, an easy way to fix it is actually using negative dehazing in lightroom. I had to do it on this one as a gradient filter on the sky to prevent banding and painted it out of the trees above the skyline. I still have a little from converting to JPG ... but I can fix that with a bit more tweaking.

Here is the color version

Any help on this would be appreciated. This is one I want to submit for the fair this year, I can manually fix it in Photoshop but I would rather prevent it.

So I checked and I am editing in 8bit.

I am fairly new to Photoshop, only been really using it for a month or so, but I love the flexibility it gives and I found new life in some old images I had using it over lightroom. But I am far from an expert.

EDIT: Thank you Na Horuk for PM'ing me with some info on the banding so we don't take this off topic from the great photos.
I redid the photo and found my error that led to the banding was in overdoing the noise reduction for the sky. I undid that edit and toned the noise reduction down a bit and the result is much better.

Looks like I am 3 days late to the party, but if you have definitively ruled out the PSU, the only possible issue would be the Motherboard. Even with no CPU you would get lights on the motherboard and fan power.

You mentioned you were on the LGA1155 socket so that is 3rd gen Intel, they are now on 7th gen and motherboards are usually the first to fail between the board/cpu/psu.

Since you already have 32gb of ram, it will be DDR3 which limits your upgrade options if you want to keep the ram. Skylake and Kabylake both use DDR4. I am not seeing any good replacements for the 1155 socket. If you are going to upgrade it makes sense to upgrade the RAM to DDR4 and go with a kabylake build or wait for Zen which should be out in March.

Yes, I do think I need to crop it. I want to enter it into the fair this year which means I have to keep it so it looks good at 16x20 which will put some constraints on my cropping. Also the 2 Joshua trees on the far left poking up above the rock bothers me, so I will likely remove them.

I might do some more tweaks to the sky as well. At this point I usually go a few different directions then compare them at the end and see which one I like most.

Black & White Looking into Kings Canyon

I think that was part of it. I live at sea level, camped the day before at 9k feet then day 1 hiked over 2 12k foot passes. Night 2 was spent at 11.5k feet with another 2 12k foot passes that day. I have hiked in that area before, but never done the mileage as fast as we did and last time I went slowly from 5k feet to 12k feet over a week or so which helps the body adapt. I felt fine except for the loss of appetite which caused a pretty extreme loss of energy and led to an early exit.

This is from my hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains last year. I had a bit of a tough time and lost my appetite on day 2 so I didn't get very many keepers unfortunately but this is one I feel came out ok. It was the middle of the day, so the color version is ... ok. With the large granite mountains of the Sierras I think it lends itself to black and white photography anyway.

This was along the PCT just north of Kearsarge pass looking west into Kings Canyon. There is a trail down there somewhere that goes from my location to the other side of the range following the canyon.

Taken with the cheap plastic nifty fifty.
