Ahh, its all so clear to me now. I never upgraded my DCU from when I installed it for the Kx.
Still remains to find out what the original freezing was caused by - I put it down to one of the microsd cards locking up the memory and preventing the other also from saving, all the while not giving any clue that an error was occurring. When the pictures were taken the display picture appeared so I was unaware of anything being wrong, other than the whole thing freezing up requiring the battery to be removed to reset twice.

Yes, they did show correctly in CC4 for earlier images, there were some old ones on the same card that read ok in the same session yesterday. I will look for that option to change to dng and try that. I suspected the microSD adaptors too as I have one for a 3D printer that gives trouble using these things, must be the extra contacts possibly - anyway I have gone to a pair of full sized ones now. Hopefully this will overcome the freezing problem and missing images. Also I think I no longer need the bracketing as the K3II shows none of the over/under exposure problems I was having with my two earlier Pentaxs, an IstDS2 and a Kx. ---------- Post added 01-22-17 at 01:38 AM ---------- I tried the DNG, No opening in the DCU4 (not CC4 as earlier stated). Tried PS elements and opened fine. I saw PS elements have a PEF option but it will not open my PEFs.

The PEF files from my K3II are not able to be displayed in the main CC4 window but will only open up as a slideshow. Anybody got any ideas why? I can convert the files to jpg files in the camera ok though.
I found this out yesterday when my camera froze up while picture taking and only freed itself up by taking the battery out. A lot of the pictures I took did not save at all and all the jpgs were of zero size so were not openable but the PEFs were still there but , as I said , many were totally missing. The camera seemed to be working, making appropriate noises and displaying a preview image but not saving. I tried the camera again at home and all seemed to be ok except the buffer often filled up while saving and I was waiting a minute or two waiting for it to clear. I normally have been saving to both slots, one on PEF and the other on jpg and I use a three shot bracketing. The cards I have been using are class 10 microSD in converters so I went out and got a couple of sandisk ultra full size cards and the same thing is going on not reading the PEFs in CC4.

The 18 f 3.5 is a bit of a special optic, highly corrected to keep straight lines straight. I used to use mine a lot in the film days but not much in aps but still a great lens. Heads go very oval at the sides of groups taken with it so move the thin ones out there. For aps I have the f17-28 and it mostly lives on the camera now. A bit fragile though, I broke some internal focussing parts so got another.

I had a Ist DS2 then ,and still have, a KX. I went through the rechargeable AA battery path with nicads and Nimh but went back to the Everyready lithiums that came with the KX as a sample. Just change them once a year and never have to worry or keep a freshly charged extra set with me. They would often go more than a year.

A bit sus getting an opened boxed camera with different numbers on each - was the shutter count on zero? My K-3ii is in the defective range but has not done anything wrong at all and I am a bit reluctant to have it pulled apart if it is not faulty. CR Kennedy says not all in the range are faulty and not to return it if it shows no problems. I still have 11 months to find a problem.
