Problem solved! Went to Ricoh website and downloaded version 1.02 and loaded into my camera which had version 1.00. Works fine with Sony SDHC card. Thank you very much; I sure didn't want to send it back needlessly.

Tried but I couldn't. The msg "memory card error" occurs immediately on powering up the camera and that is as far as I can get in the menu.

Okay' it's here, but I have a problem. I tried both SDHC cards I have (Sony 32gb & 16gb class 10 that work in other cameras) and each gives me the same error msg "memory card error". Ricoh support suggests contacting seller and ,of course, Amazon will replace it. BUT, before I do that I want to try another brand card...suggestions?
Also....camera works fine with my old SD cards ( different brands). Could be a firmware problem?

Thank you very much for your encouragement (all three of you). I threw caution to the wind and bought a K50 on Amazon for $291. It is a much better camera than what I have! I'll contribute pics too(I love 1:1 close-ups).

I have an old K100d that I bought new some years ago. The dial on the back has started to fail---turning the dial does not change the displayed parameter. I have not taken it in for repair figuring this would be a $100-$200 expense on an old camera with 25k shutter clicks. So, here's my idea:
I buy an used k20d with low shutter counts in this same price range. Good idea or not? Today is my birthday and I plan on buying something now.
