Ricoh publishes the news on their webpage:

PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome Digital SLR CAMERA wins iF DESIGN AWARD 2024?RICOH IMAGING

The iF Design award is not easy to win and nothing you can buy. Pentax applied and won with several cameras, like K1, K-01. Nice to be recognized.

So, time to share some results as well as my thoughts! Nothing award winning here, I wasn't sure of just how functional the camera itself was and opted to sacrifice a roll of HP5 for the cause and just take snaps of things. This was also my first test with ID-11 as a developer as well.

The first frame was a test of the Panoramic mode and 170 mm zoom. The rest were all full frame and mostly at 38 mm, as around 95% of the shots I took at max zoom all had horrible motion blur!

Overall I'm fairly impressed! It definite performs at its best at 38 mm or somewhere in the middle of the zoom range, anywhere else and you just won't get the shutter speeds you need as I believe the base aperture at 170 mm is f/12.8 or something around there. I think this camera was made for shooting high speed (1600) films which are no longer available. Since there's no manual adjustment in-camera, there's not much else you can do.

It was certainly worth what I paid, and it was fun to use. I'll definitely keep it around as a grab 'n go kinda deal.

I picked up this cute little thing at the thrift store last week, and it seems to work just fine! There was an older roll of Kodak Max 400 in it that appears to have been rewound already by the time I got to the camera. Not sure what I'll do with that just yet.

I haven't used a film point-and-shoot since I was kid in the 90s, so I always scoffed at the idea. However, when I saw it was a Pentax, I had to grab it! So far I've got it loaded up with a roll of HP5, excited to see the results. Overall the body is in good shape, just like one or two small dings, and two of the corners are slightly scuffed.

I Really Missed my DFA* 50mm f/1.4 lens - So I Purchased It Again

Yes, closer to where I use to be when I shot Pentax in the past. Left Pentax about the time Covid hit, sold everything and went to Sony and Fuji but returned to Pentax in the 2023. Here is a list of lens I own now including my latest purchase (HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW) which was one I wanted to own again, because I really missed it. These are still fewer lens than I use to own, but I am no longer shooting ASPc cameras or lenses. I am only shooting Full Frame K1 Mark II and dedicating my photography mostly to landscape.

Lens List:
HD Pentax-D FA 31mm F1.8 Limited
HD Pentax-D FA 21mm F2.4 ED Limited DC WR
HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW
HD*D FA 24-70mm*F2.8 ED SDM WR
HD Pentax-D FA 28-105mm*F3.5-5.6 ED DC WR
IRIX 45mm F/1.4 Dragonfly
ROKINON 85M-P 85mm f/1.4
Samyang 35mm f/1.4
Samyang 50mm f/1.4

I thought to myself, "what do you want to shoot first with this lens?" Well, I wanted to see if the lens was as sharp as the lens I purchased in 2018, so I decide to experiment with it and take some landscape using RAW files ISO 400 at f/1.4 and see how well it did. Of course f/1.4 is not a foot stop I use for landscape, but I wanted to see how sharp it would be wide open at f/1.4. So I took the following photos at Sunset and all the shots were handheld. I was pleased and soon will post some shots dedicated to landscape in a week or so, but until then here are the first photos I took with the lens using f/1.4. Yes, this lens is really liked by me and so glad I stepped up and purchased it again.

Without bothering to get into detail, due to circumstances outside of my control I now find myself VERY much in debt and having to sell off many of my favorite hobbies entirely.
I almost was going to sell my camera stuff but then I realized something.
Photography is cheap.

I sold off all my film stuff years ago because it WASN'T cheap to use and required you to keep up with it regularly so stuff didn't expire.
I used to shoot digital almost every day and often all day on weekends, but then I sorta lost interest and stopped entirely. Mostly due to life giving me no time for anything and other hobbies cutting into that time. Which was sorta ironic since I had waited more than a decade for Pentax to release a FF DSLR and I had finally bought one (when the last of the K-1 were clearanced out) with a good zoom as well.
Another irony is not long ago before I got hit with the debt I just happened to pick up the camera which still only has a shutter count of 170 after having it for years and discovered the playback button didn't work despite never having been abused. $500 later I had it fixed and back in hand.

But now I'm glad I did fix it and I kept that stuff because now most of the other hobbies are being liquidated, but there's my Pentax, ready to play.

I would love to have a better zoom for long range (see signature), but I make due with the one I have and just use care in avoiding water since its a non WR lens.
But really I have everything I need for a hobby that costs me nothing to do at a time when that's right in my price range.

I'm glad I bought a good body and really good short zoom back when I did have money, but if a person were poor they could get an old K-5II or later and an 18-135 lens and do some really amazing photo work without feeling short changed by the gear. When you are poor, digital photography becomes the perfect hobby to have.

I managed to find $20 to support the site as well since after years of barely checking in, I think I'll be around a bit more often now.

Hello, and thanks for allowing me to join the Takumar club. As a long-time Nikon F and F2 user, I have now, since last Saturday joined the ranks of Pentax due to receiving from Freecycle, a Kit comprising: a Pentax Spotmatic F, a Spotmatic SPII, a 50mm f1.4 Super Multi Coated Takumar, a 50mm f1.4 SMC Takumar and a 28mm f3.5 Super Multi Coated Takumar, along with a couple of Tamrons and a Mamiya Sekor, and intriguingly a Pentax M42 to bayonet adapter, all in great condition. I'm very excited about it all! So excited that I've just ordered a Pentax K-7, just to use these wonderful lenses. I look forward to posting images!

Hi all,

A little about me:

I started out using my dad’s Nikons and excellent darkroom back in the ‘70s, eventually worked in a decent photo lab (doing some 16mm cinematography along the way). I had a nice little ME Super and a few lenses I could afford. The ME Super’s shutter eventually stopped working and I got a K1000. Changed careers and went digital, as shooting film was now more expensive. Eventually got a sweet little Fujifilm X10 that I still love and use, but the film bug has bit again since I started scanning my old slides. I love the look of them — well, some of them, ha ha. And I’m amazed at how well my a lot of my Ektachromes from the ‘80s have lasted.

So now Eric Hendrickson is fixing my ME Super, and I also have my dad’s old Olympus PEN EE-S. (But the K1000’s prism has too much desilvering.)

I look forward to conversing with the great minds here about how to shoot film most economically without a darkroom (C-41 and scanning, I presume, but what to do about printing?).

Landscape Late Winter Photo of a 19th Century Stone House in the US

Hi All,

As part of my photography education and journey, I often capture photos of this stone house. Capturing a photo of the North side of the house, which is pictured below, that is not in shadow can be challenging because the sun rises and sets on the southern side (far hill in the background).

I have been wanting to capture a photo of this house surrounded by fog for a soft and moody photo. On this particular day, the morning (AM) air temperature was cool and heavy fog was in the area. I couldn't get out in the morning because I had work; however, after work was completed later in the afternoon, the air was still cool and sky cloud, so I ventured out and hoped the stone house was surrounded by fog.

I arrived and to my disappointment, the stone house was not surrounded by fog. However, the sky above the surrounding landscape was thick and low hanging clouds. Some fog remained in the air, especially on the top of the nearby hills. So, I decided to capture a photo anyway for no other reason to experience what a photo will be like from a particular location near the house under conditions that intentionally produces a photo that evokes feeling by blending a combination of softness, transitioning of color, and depth of field. I would then use the photo captured on this day as a reference for the next time I return to the stone house under different conditions.

Note: Under more foggy conditions, the combination of the house and the fog and available light (and not necessarily color of depth of field) would produce a soft moody image.

I picked a spot, mounted the camera on the tripod, selected a focal length that balanced the amount of sky and foreground, carefully adjusted the camera height and camera angle so that the chimneys did not obscure the Henry House (brown colored) and Visitor Center (white building) that are in the background, and leveled the camera.

I captured the photo in raw format and converted the photo into a jpeg. I minimally processed the image. Very slight sharpening was applied to the stone house and nothing else.

Below is the photo I captured of the stone house under the conditions that were available in the afternoon on this particular day. Overall, I am fairly pleased with the photo overall. What I learned on this occasion is how effective low hanging clouds can be for diffusing natural light and reducing shadows. This may be the only photo I have of this side of the house that is not in shadow and has this much light on it. I will confirm and update this post.

What I would like to know from others is the following:
  • Would a less soft photo (e.g., house, foreground) make for a more pleasing image?

  • Would you prefer a less warm photo?

  • Are the colors (or any particular color and object) under or over saturated?

Other feedback (e.g., composition, camera settings) is also welcomed.

Note: I am not offended by constructive critical feedback.

Cheers!

I have been doing a bit of a wander through my collection scanned film photos of which I have many. This is because I have a a varied collection of old film cameras and lenses.

All of them have had film run through them and I'm pleased to find that mostly they have produce pretty good images. (I have my film commercially developed and then scan them myself on an Epsom film scanner)

There is something very enjoyable, I think, walking the streets here in Brighton and London with an old film camera taking pictures hoping I have the right settings etc. And interestingly, when I ask people if I can take their picture, they are very happy about it, even obliging with some amusement too. Often it's followed with a conversation as they want to know more about the camera.

All images are K1000 except the first one which is Espio 928

Here's a collection I have had printed, mounted and framed for exhibitions in the past and happily sold a few too.

I hope you like them and I thank you for looking at them.

Learning to photograph what I love

Hey all,

Looking forward to getting to know you all more. This site has been incredibly helpful getting acquainted to Pentax, DSLR photography, technique, and equipment!

I’m Ben, I live in Northern Wisconsin with my wife, and I started shooting with Pentax last year. I have taken photos with a hand-me-down Sony Cybershot for ~15 years. A trip to Yosemite and Big Sur a year ago opened my eyes to how limited I was in capturing the photos I wanted to get. Finally decided I was ready to learn something new. After digging out my 35mm and reigniting my interest in film, it quickly died after I learned what the cost of film has done in the last ten years. Thus began my hunt for a digital camera with interchangeable lenses. I landed on Pentax and as some of my favorite scenes to capture are behind combine harvesters, the robust build of the Pentax drew me in. I’m fairly budget limited right now so I decided to start with an older camera and have tried to taylor the lens to my use. I found a well cared for K10D and it has been awesome. I started with the kit DA18-55 lens it came with. I’ve since added a plastic fantastic DA35, an FA 80-320, and a DAL50-200 WR. I’ve got a DA12-24 on the way that I’m quite excited for! I’ve learned quite a bit about used equipment in the last year (including bargains that were bargains for a reason) and am really looking forward to working the wide angle side more.

I’m a novice and am wanting to learn how to better capture people and the places I work in (fields and grain elevators mostly). I’m working quite a bit on photo editing and file management right now as well.

Thanks for having me!
-Ben

Clackers' Beginners Tip 103: Lens Coatings
Posted By clackers

Good morning all. It's been eventful, I ate a kids meal at McDonalds today.

His mum got really angry.

In other news, they're building a mirror factory in my town.

I could see myself working there.

This week I want to talk about the different kinds of lens coatings. They are thin layers of material that are applied to the surface of the lens elements to reduce unwanted reflections, flare, ghosting, and chromatic aberrations. They also improve contrast, color rendition, and light transmission. They're some of those letters you see on the name of a lens, and you do pay for them.

Pentax has long been known for high quality lenses with advanced coating technology. In 1971 they launched the SMC (Super Multi Coating) range, that had seven layers of chemical coating vapours deposited in a vacuum chamber to reduce reflections from 4% to 0.2% per surface at a time when competitors were mostly using two or three. IIRC, Zeiss licensed the patents to make its own T range of lens coatings. Zeiss and Pentax were buddies back then. Zeiss helped devise the K mount, and pretty much gave Pentax its own 28mm Distagon as the legendary K28 f2.0 'Hollywood'.

Ghostless Coating (GC) was introduced in 1997 with the FA*43 Limited and is another special coating that is applied to only one or two lens elements in some premium lenses. It was rumoured that the Japanese police wanted automated cameras able to identify car license plates at night that could cope with headlight glare.

Another type of Pentax lens coating was introduced in 2010 with the DA*55, called Aero Bright Coating (ABC). ABC uses nano-particles to create a honeycomb structure that reduces reflections to 0.05% per surface and is found on Star lenses like the DFA*70-200 f2.8.

High Definition Coating (HD) was introduced in 2013 and is an improved version of the original SMC. HD consists of eight layers of material that reduce reflections to 0.1% per surface. It is tougher than Aero Bright Coating, so is good for the exposed front element of a lens like the reissued HD FA35 f2.

SP coating is physical protection, resisting water, grease and abrasion, obviously applied only to the front element.

To finish with, there's the story of Barry, who had been drinking at a pub all night.

The barman finally announced it was closing time. So Barry stood up to leave and fell flat on his face. He tried to stand again ... same result, so he figured he'd crawl outside and get some fresh air and maybe that would sober him up.

Once outside, he stood up and fell over again, so he decided to crawl the four blocks home.

When he arrived at the door he stood up and fell flat on his face. He crawled through the door and into his bedroom. When he reached the bed he tried one more time to stand up. He quickly fell onto the mattress and was asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

His wife standing over him shouting woke him the next morning. "You've been drinking!"

Putting on an innocent look, he said: "What makes you say that?"

"The pub just called - you left your wheelchair there again."

Also a few pics for those who have a sticking ASA ring, maybe you can learn from my mistake and get it back together without incident.Where I initiali made my mistake was not preassembling the small leaf spring into the ring before putting it back onto the mount, and I ended up breaking one of the little arms. they are quite brittle.

When the K3 Mark III came out I really did not have too much interest in upgrading. It was not too long at the time that i had replaced my original K3 with a K3ii. Of course one should never say never. I came across a K3 Mark III Premium Edition from a Japanese seller on Ebay that I have purchase several from over the years. I thought something must be wrong with it since the price for the whole kit was less than what a used K3 Mark III body goes for. I contacted the seller and they assured me that everything was there and the camera had no issues. Since I have been buying from this seller for a long time I decided to go for it. I sure am glad I did. What a camera. I am still to figure all the stuff on this camera. It has taken a while to get used to menu layout, but once you get used to it is pretty simple. The camera only had a little over 3,000 clicks on it so it was not even broke in yet. I have not touched my K3ii since this one arrived.

It even had the special strap. Most of the items were still in their packaging and sealed.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 102: The DA*50-135 Telephoto
Posted By clackers
Replies: 16
Good morning all. Very disappointing, I was robbed at the gas station yesterday.

I called the police and they asked if I knew who did it.

I said, yes, it was pump number six.

Things are really not going my way recently.

So getting my drone stuck in the tree wasn't the worst thing that happened to me today. But it's definitely up there.

This week I want to talk about an interesting older lens that might be picked up at a good price because of a fault. It's the DA*50-135, one of my favourite lenses on APS-C. It and its sibling the original DA*16-50 debuted back in 2007 and were the first generation of Pentax lenses to have focus motors inside them instead of through a shaft from the screwdrive motor inside the camera. They were very quiet and smooth, but too small for all the high quality glass inside those lenses - they focused slowly, and tended to fail. A former service tech has said on Facebook that when Ricoh purchased Pentax production line modifications were done to reduce the failure rate, around seven years after its debut.
*
Now, the brand new DA*16-50 uses a very different and quick system, and if the DA*50-135 is similarly updated (clearing of the decks has happened, it is now out of production as Mistral75 reported), may well get the same type of PLM motors.

We need to acknowledge the old lens *was* a Star design. For all the money, they took beautiful pictures, and had great build quality - Tokina even tried selling them to Canon and Nikon owners. With internal focusing, it draws in no air when zooming so the weather sealing is better than say, the DA 55-300 I own. And of course, it's f2.8 at the long end for nice bokeh and darker conditions, versus f6.3 for the 55-300, which can't match in those important departments.

The pic below shows it in its element, lovely rendering of static situations such as portraits, landscapes and still life. For many photographers, that's what they shoot. The 55-300 is obviously better suited for action.

If you do pick one up for a bargain, it may be because those little AF motors failed. But a curiosity is that this is a lens that can be tricked into using your camera's screwdrive to focus instead, which actually speeds it up. Details were in Beginners Tip 25 Converting An SDM Lens To Screwdrive.

To finish with, there's the story of the farmer with five female pigs and, as times were hard, he had determined to take them to the county fair and sell them.

While at the fair, he met another farmer who owned five male pigs. After talking a bit, they decided to mate the pigs and split everything 50/50.

The farmers lived sixty miles away from one another and so they agreed to drive thirty miles and find a field in which to mate their pigs. The first morning, the farmer with the female pigs got up at 5 am, loaded the pigs into the family station wagon, which was the only vehicle they had, and drove the thirty miles.

While the pigs were mating, he asked the other farmer, "How will I know if they are pregnant?"

The other farmer replied, "If they're in the grass grazing in the morning, then they're pregnant. If they're in the mud, then they're not."

The next morning they were rolling in the mud, so he hosed them off, loaded them again into the family station wagon and proceeded to try again. The following morning, MUD again!!!

This continued all week until one morning the farmer was so tired that he couldn't get out of bed. He called to his wife, "Honey, please look outside and tell me if the pigs are in the mud or in the field.

"Neither," reported his wife. "They're in the station wagon and one of them is honking the horn."

At last - a break in the ever continual blasting rain and wind from storms Gerrit then immediately followed by Henk.

Unlike many, I am so not that intrepid one happy to brave all weather conditions and get blasted off the face of the Earth to be last seen air-lifted off to Timbuktu.
I also don't do mud - keeping vertical is challenge enough for me, thank you very much.

But something happened to my resolves when it started to snow here in West Sussex - a snow that flittered between a light dusting and a full fall.

I grabbed my KP, fled down the stairs, quickly threw a jacket on, walked out into the snow and started snapping away like in a slightly demented happy loony, oblivious that I still had my slippers on, jacket unzipped and gloveless.

The camera and I became covered with snow when one very concerned passer by pointed out I'd ruin me camera getting it wet like this from the snow.
I smiled and reassured him with - "It's okay, it's a Pentax."

So here they are - snow spots and all. Thanks for looking and hope you enjoy.

Happy New Year! These are all shot in the chilly Oregon forest this morning with a KP + DA* 16-50 SDM, except for the photo of the KP leaning against a branch, which was on a K-3 III + 55-300 PLM.

These also mark the beginning of a new stage in my life and career. I've just retired from my job as arts editor at a small alt weekly to pursue photography full time. (OK, my planned retirement was actually forced by an astonishing situation, which you can read about in The New York Times and The Oregonian, but my sudden layoff came at the same time I had already told the paper I planned to leave the staff.)

I'm looking forward to a new daily routine that involves a lot of shooting, a lot of printing, and a lot of aggressive marketing of my work -- hand colored black and white landscapes -- which has finally begun to get some traction in galleries around the West.

Happy New Year to all, and may your 2024 be as adventurous as mine!

Thematic It's That Time of Year Again (Favorite Images of 2023)

We are getting close to the end of 2023. There has been a tradition here on Pentax Forums of having a thread where different folks here can post their favorite (best?) images from the last year.

This is not a competition and there is no magic number of images that you need to hit. I’ve usually limited it to around 10 images for myself, but feel free to share a few more or less depending on how you felt like the year went. I would keep the number of images per post to five images simply to help those with slower internet speeds (like me).

There will be a lot of different styles and types of images represented here and that is fine. We are a community and it is about a shared journey, not about one of us lording over the others how our skills or style are better.

I’ll try to include a mention of the lens that was used for each image.

(I am afraid that you all have probably seen all of these images before, but at least it will start the thread).
