P&S Camera

Ratmagiclady- I have gotten some sharp ones, just not as consistently as I'd like. I mean, I know I'm used to an SLR image, but like the images from PFH and mtroute I would NEVER get out of mine. Like I said earlier, I look back at my images from 7 years ago on our 2 MP Canon and I often times wish I had it back! Guess I need to go shoppin'! I am constantly having issues with the focusing where it just won't and I have to line it all up again and hold the button half way down, sometimes more than once, just to get it to focus. Doesn't work well with kids! I don't even know if I can "dial back the flash". I'll have to look into that. And I don't even know how you can change the jpeg sharpening. How do you do that? Thanks for the recommendations all of you. Appreciate it.

Here are a few examples. 2 from outside and 1 inside with flash. I just feel like they are constantly "soft" and blurry or washed out and I haven't been able to fix it in the camera and I don't want to have to edit every single picture, but I'd like them to turn out nice enough to like them.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I got so caught up in the holidays and didn't check back until today, so it wasn't that I was unappreciative, I just spaced it. I will get some pictures up from my Canon in the next day or so you can see what I'm talking about. Thanks again to all of you.

I'm wondering what P&S cameras people have that they love. I shoot mainly my k20d, but I have my lame little Canon camera for pocket needs. I hate it. I bought it 2 years ago and the one we had 7 years ago was better. I was wondering what is one you love that takes good pictures and is fairly fast (for catching pictures of kids). I'd like one that has sharp quality and doesn't throw in a bunch of noise. My Canon has noise even on low speeds (100, 200) and is just not that great in picture quality. I don't know if I got a defective one, but I need another one. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Dom & emr- sorry. I guess a bit confusing. I shot Raw and converted through CS2, but shot the image on k20d. I can see how my wording was contradicting and confusing. Sorry.

mingdie- I"m not sure I know how to choose between highest quality and highest compression. on cs2 I just save as-jpg.

jeffkrol-
i've never tried TIFF. Guess I should.

all of you- thanks for replying. what a great forum where others will take the time to respond. appreciate it!

-- I just looked at my RAW images and then the jpeg's and it's true. They aren't there in the RAW, so I'll work on the converting part and see where that gets me. Thanks!

-----(added later) okay.... mingdie- I'm such a dork. I didn't even notice the box that came up with the jpg saving file. It was on low (3). I'm so glad you told me!!! I haven't done much with RAW but am starting to get it. If you hadn't told me that I have no idea how long it would have taken me to see that. Once I changed that, the lines went away even on the jpeg. Yikes. Thanks for mentioning that. Something so basic overlooked. I'm a dork!

So then it's just the craps of digital? That's lame. I did shoot it in RAW and converted it through CS2. Do I need to change the bits in my camera or somewhere else? Thanks for all your answers. I appreciate it.

I've had this happen several times. I cropped the picture so you can see how there are these weird wavy lines that show up in my picture. It seems to only happen with flat solid colors, but does anyone know why or how to get rid or/avoid having them? Would they show up like that printed? Thanks. The lighting seemed to be fine and nothing weird. They were shot RAW and converted to JPEG on k20d 14mp. Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by version unless you mean D FA. By spinning, I mean that I could turn it to the left forever. It doesn't ever end. I haven't noticed it being a problem in AF except for that it is extremely slow to focus. Don't know if that's normal for this lens either.

I just bought the Pentax 100mm 2.8 lens. When I turn the focus ring all the way to the left, it doesn't stop. I have the clamp off, and it will slightly catch, but the ring will just keep on spinning when I focus it manutally. . I was wondering if this is normal or not. I don't have any other lenses that do that, but just wanted to see if it's something that is normal or not. Also, I haven't tried it on my k20d yet, but on the ist ds it has a really hard time focusing. Anyone experiencing that? Thanks.

Is it too close? 40mm vs 50mm

So I've had a lot of helpful reviews. My question now is I have the 50mm 1.4. Is the 40mm going to give much more of a wider view? Is it worth having both or just picking one?

Anyone have both the 31mm 1.8 and 40mm 2.8? Any major quality difference there? Thanks!

I do have the Tamron 28-70 2.8 which is supposedly really good, but I feel like I get a lot of soft pictures. Anyone had experience with this? I definately get sharper ones with my 50mm 1.4, but I guess that's been explained why.

Thank you! That helps a lot. I don't do just head shots, I do full body and whatnot. When I'm just doing stuff with my kids inside, the 50mm is too close and when I'm working with my baby, I can't get far enough away before she moves. I feel like I get caught in corners a lot which is why I was thinking the 35 might be good. So there isn't any quality difference between the da and fa then?

I am looking for a new lens and I am so confuzed by all the different things, so here are my 3 main questions.

-is there a difference between what prime means and limited means
-is da or fa better
- are limited/fixed lenses faster than a range lens

I do mainly portrait work, but would enjoy playing around with a macro. I have an ist ds and k20d. My lenses are a 28-70mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4, 80-320mm 4. I LOVE my 50mm, but it's a little too "zoomed" for working indoors. I've read about the 35mm macro and just heard of a 15mm? Any suggestions for a great sharp macro lens that would also be great for portraits? Thanks!

Well, I'm not trying to turn it into a Nikon vs Pentax contest. That was merely for me, but when I was asked to post some pics, those are what I had. I'm not comparing wb, I didn't want to change any of that to alter the picture. I'm feeling a little embarrased by some of the comments. I'm not trying to be difficult. I appreciate all those who take the time to try and help me. The reason for multiple posts is because they get pushed down so far and I don't know if anyone will see it, so I post again. I think they've been a little different in question, but similar. I guess I"m not exactly familiar with how the site works. Do you get notified somehow if someone posts after you? Sorry. Anyway, I don't understand how to crop it in and leave it unsized. It says it has to be no bigger than 800 pixels tall, so is there a different way? Thanks and sorry to those I've bothered, I'm just trying to get this camera because I really want to love it. Just FYI for those who care, the sharpest consistently was my ist d. I love that camera!\

Mallee Boy- thanks for not making me feel like a complete idiot. I'm getting the feeling there are some people who are a little edgy. But I could be wrong. That's the problem with text!

Well, from what I understand, I can't make them much bigger than that can I? Well, I suppose I could do each on separtely. And believe it or not, eventhough they were all at 50mm, they were a little off from eachother. one was a little closer and one a little further. I will try and add them individually a little later today if I get the chance. Thanks.

Okay, here are some pictures. I ran to the Costco and grabbed a Nikon just to test the differences. I took pictures with all 3. Here is the info:

Nikon d60 (10 pix)
Ist DS (6 pix)
K20d (14 pix)

All using 1/30, 5.6 50mm

The Nikon had a Nikkor lesn, Pentax cameras used Sigma or Tamron

Tell me the order that you think they are as far as which one is best to worst and why. Like coloring, sharpness etc. Then I'll tell you which is which. A little "blind" test so to speak. :)

I shrunk the pics to the required upload size and then sharpened them. I don't know if you'll get the detail you need to see.

Most were handheld. I did it purposely on a low shutter speed to see what I could get away with handheld. The last 2 were tripod.

Is it just me? Please tell me! I have the k20d and ist. I can pick up the ist and get a great sharp clear picture hand held, no flash. Same everything with the k20d and it's soft or blurred. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it not possible to just pick up the k20d and take a good picture? Is there a major learning curve or some settings I need to change that I don't know about? I am just about at my end here and ready to return it, but there are so many people who love it and I just hate this camera. Please help me understand!

I'm not expecting the picture to be better so much as when I zoom in on my computer, I want to see a difference, otherwise, why spend the extra money? So what you're saying, Marc, is that you won't notice a difference until you print over an 8x12. Up to that point it's going to look the same, but after that size I would?
Flyer- I didn't realize you had to wait for a symbol to show up. I'll try that. Thanks to all of you for helping me with this.
