My first new flash I tried was a YONGNUO YN460 which behaves exactly like the Vivitar--no flash action.
However, when I tried my old Achiever DZ260 (that I use on my K-1000), it works like a champ.
Hard to believe that I received two out-of-the-box failures from two different companies.
Any ideas? ---------- Post added 08-15-15 at 08:16 AM ----------
Yes, I did try cleaning the contacts on the hot shoe and the flash, but sadly, to no avail.
And yes, the flash does trigger off when I short the center pin with contacts on the side of the foot base.
What to try next, please?

Good morning.
I have recently purchased a K100D and Vivitar DF-283-PEN flash unit.
This external flash unit powers up and it fires when the test button is pressed but I cannot get this flash to fire when the shutter button is pressed. The camera does seem to recognise that the flash is attached to the hot shoe and fired up. I have tried AUTO PICT and all of the others, but it still will not fire.
This may be more of a Vivitar problem than a K100D problem, but here goes.
When I hit the FN button to check the flash setting on the K100D, it only allows for a manual flash. It just skips over the auto settings.
I have read the camera and flash manuals for anything pertaIning to an external flash on this camera, but so far to no avail.
I am using alkaline batteries in the flash and the camera right now.
I'm sure to be omitting some key details, so please ask away for any clarification.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

I would like to introduce myself as a new member to your forum.
I am a die-hard K-1000 user, continuously since 1980, to include four years as a college photojournalist way, way back in my undergrad days. Nowadays it's just snaps of friends and family.
I did get somewhat of a scare the other day when I learned that my (now former) mail-order film supplier no longer sells film, so I purchased a used K100D online (and a bunch of film) for that perhaps not so distant day when film availability becomes a problem.
So I'm what you might call a Yestertech sort of person, I suppose.
So, anyway, with no further ado, I'm just glad to be here.
