I never really wondered at the few I've seen...but now I know :)
I guess I thought they were cast concrete
around here they used hedge or locust posts...we have some that are older than me
does that make them petrified wood?

just before dad retired he changed jobs so a younger guy wouldn't be let go...he became a storekeeper
it was a holdover title from the past...he did a little bit of everything as well
of all the things he might have been a storekeeper wasn't one of them
and yes it seems you may have a knack for extended narrative however others will have to determine if it is up to scratch

we had a job on our bigger line crews...skinner...from muleskinner
he took care of the trucks and trailers
horses and mules are still in use
when I was researching the stitching horse I mentioned above I ran across a current (2000?) manual for the use of horses by our special forces
a coworker's part time job was farrier
he shoed stock for pleasure riders and some farmers who still did it the hard way
it didn't take long to find out that while blacksmith and farrier seemed similar at first blush
they were not the same job or skillset

sure, as I said you will see them in movies and photos
it was a style that could purchased commercially, parallel to military usage
I hear it is still popular for American endurance riding
somewhere I think I have instructions for making one
however saddlemaking just seemed like too much effort for someone as lazy as I am
I do have a pdf of an army saddler's bench/tool chest that a reenactor was kind enough to send me...in case you want to try and stitch one up :)

if you look you will see them but you can't work cows in the style we know without the horn
think of the horn as a belay point
there are all sorts of almost fetishistic regard for whichever bit of gear someone believes in
mcclellans are supposed to be light and an almost minimalist approach to saddlery...like a k1000 to photography
we've just about exhausted what I know about tack :)

I can't imagine outsourcing my pp work...it's actually why I take pictures
then I thought about it and imagined it for someone else...it kinda worked
it seems as though you would have to be precise in articulating your vision
I have no cohesive arc of expression
i'm all over the place
however each image gets the look I want
I see other photographers whose work an be distinguished by the processing...almost like a brand
if that was your goal and you could find someone with really good slider memory...it might just work
interesting question

excellent work...it's nice to see traditional saddles made anew
if you watch the really old westerns you'll see they have tall cantles (the back of your butt bit) and horns
in the films when we were growing up they are lower
then like everything else the traditionalists got in a snit, so several of he new films have returned to the older style of tack

beautiful work!
were those pommel bags or saddle bags...did he say?
"horse" pistols were often carried on the pommel or in a bag
last year I saw a setup that was a smallish bag on one side and the flapped holster on the other
the dealer was saying it was original

this is another thing I do for heavy rigs
it is fairly expensive 1/2 inch rope and 1/4 inch poly webbing
I make them long to go around my corpulent torso
then just tie a knot to shorten it when the need arises
very strong and quite comfy

I use it as well but only when I can't source polyester strappage
polyester generally won't snag or fray as easily

if one of our dogs can crave polish dill pickles I imagine a bit of rye bread is fairly benign
today the high and low is 14
the squirrels have actually calmed down a bit
since xmas we've had a lot of sex going on...maybe for warmth?
anyway a couple yards away this female has her back to the wall and can reject any more suitors from about 270 degrees horizontally and 180 degrees vertically
she either has really fattened up or is pregnant
she doesn't seem to enjoy the subzero mambo any longer
I hope the back story is better than the image :)

looking at your original example I would find the clutter of plasticware problematic
since the connectors are probably standard you could replace everything below the strap proper with a length of webbing and two male ends
length would still be adjustable but "softer" giving you more flexibility while directing the strap out of the way when using live view
that mod would also work when attaching to your plate in the second example
I prefer a two-point attachment and use a product called the strap buddy
however that precludes the use of a tripod
I think when using a longer lens you will find the twisting caused by a single point of attachment unpleasant
if you attach one end to the body and one to the plate I believe your camera/lens will hang more comfortably
as to hand straps...I like and use them on all my larger point and shoots and occasionally on my k01
I find they work for me
I usually make my own but if I was spending your money i'd buy a gordy's
if you just want to see how one works get a length of paracord, knot it into a loop and attach to your camera body

I read a text exploring basic cryptography years ago
one of the takeaways was german's penchant for purpose-built words gave them some protection against decryption
lately I've heard that the 140 character limit was raised on twitter so that more than one word could be tweeted :)

funny thing about weather...I only think of it as "extreme" when any of it goes on too long
since we have seasons we get a bit of everything
I've worked in 30 below and if I remember rightly 110 above
one summer I was combining with my uncle
we hauled a load of grain to the elevator
the drive through was shady and cool
I got a soda while he unloaded
I noticed the big old seed company thermometer said 120 (in the shade)
I asked the guy sitting next to me if that could be right
he said that in the summer anything over 100 was hot and in the winter anything below zero was cold

we used a Freon based cleaner for electro-mechanical switches and contacts
if you do find some just be aware that if a residue was present it will become dust that needs to be dealt with

my two favorites so far happen to both be german tourists
in Yellowstone a younger guy decided to pet a buffalo while his girlfriend iphoned him
the kid got a pretty good head butt
had enough sense to boogie
mel gibsoned over the hood of his rental which followed him into the ditch when the bull hit it
in denali a quite lovely photographer pursued a cow and calf moose into an alder thicket along a creek
we heard some thrashing and a cameraless woman came ou moving at a rapid pace through the blueberries
her enormous tripod, ginormous lens and whatever it was attached to remained behind
the cow poked her head out and kind of looked around then went back into her family
I've defied Darwin on occasion but I never wanted to be a meat puddle

our bison seem to be the crankiest, maybe because they tend to be the most accessible
people are so removed from nature that they forget it's wild not TV
every trip out west there will be some Jehu courting disaster
they aren't cows and anything that can move a car off the road is probably too big to antagonize
that said I've even had whitetail bucks in the midst of rut challenge me on a trail
this year we had a bighorn ram square off against our car...a fifteen minute wait while his testosterone became depleted
you just never know :)

this story is true however the advice is supposed to be apocryphal...
a ranger at one of the lay-bys on the lamar river was talking to some very concerned tourists about bears
he told his audience that it was really quite simple to tell a black bear from a grizzly
if the bear only killed you, it was probably a grizzly
if it ate you as well, then it was likely a black bear
my advice is don't get killed or eaten :)

good looking dog!
of the multitude of dogs in our house only two have had close coats
ice between the toes just came with the territory
you might try booties...none of ours would tolerate them
or instead of picking out the ice try warming it...takes longer and you get cold but it works
I normally just use my hands but have tried the little chemical hand warmers from cabela's or dick's I think
