It's not so much on the long side, I could probably make do happily in the 70mm to 110mm for most of the rally shots I take. 200mm on the outside for most of the situations I am in. Here's a pretty typical shot from the race a few weeks ago. The 70-300 Sig is great in bright conditions, but the Rally's I shoot are usually in the winter time and much of it occurs in less than ideal lighting conditions. Mix in fast moving objects and it becomes a recipe where the gear (and talent) are really tested. That means one has to either buy good glass or rent and for me me renting is the way to go. |

I was seriously considering that, or at least borrow one at a store and shoot cars as they pass by.

At least for me, heavy / bulkiness is not even in the criteria I care about. That's why God made monopods or neck straps.

Adam,
Yeah, the K-5 is probably the runner up, probably over the D60 and even Nikon IMO. The reason I am considering the flip to the dark side is really down to two reasons.
1.) I don't plan on buying a ton of top-line glass, so that means I usually rent for the big things I want to shoot. I have used Camera Lens Rentals - Rent Canon, Nikon and Pentax. a number of times and they truly are brilliant, but sometimes it would be nice to have some local rental selections available. There is one shop that has Pentax gear but their selection is meager and availability is very spotty.
2.) Most of the really important stuff I shoot is motorsports. Rally motorsports to be specific. While I have been able to get some amazing shots with even my K100D, it takes far more technique than it should. I know obviously that the K-5 is eons in front of my K100D with AF, but that difference is less clear between the K-5 and D7. I know the K-5 has pretty stellar ISO performance so I know the camera has the guts in that respect.
I'd love to stay with Pentax but after this last race I shot, I am hitting the wall with my frustration that my gear is limiting me. The next purchase I make I want to reduce those limitations as much as possible.

Good day, I need to upgrade and am thus looking to sell off some of my Pentax gear. I am still reviewing the 'next step' but at this point am very seriously looking at the Canon D7.
Here is the gear I currently am considering selling:
Pentax K100D
Pentax 18-55
Sigma 530 Flash
Pentax 50mm f2
Sigma 28-70 f2.8
Sigma 70-300 APO
I may also have a Tokina SD 70-210mm or Soligor MC 80-200 laying around.
Any ballpark thoughts?
Thanks!

Cameralensrentals.com is fantastic. I have used them a number of times and they have always been great.

Agreed, some of the earlier comments don't sound quite right. There is no way ISO 200 is going to work given the above. Crank the ISO, open the aperture as much as possible given the reach, and you'll have to dial down the speed until you get to that right spot of brightness / no blur. Anything faster than 1/500 sounds optimistic with those lens' unless that ISO is cranked way up. The ability to handle high ISO is the beauty of the K-5, it will be your friend in these cases.

The 50-135 is about the most brilliant lens I have ever used and the focal range is quite usable, more so than a prime at least.

Winter rally is a challenge as most know, but here are a few others that came out fairly sharp and bright.
I want more ISO for Christmas.... :)

Yeah, I miss the group B stuff as well especially the quattros. Still, there is something amazing about watching a car drive 100mph on a 'road' only 12 feet wide with trees and cliffs bordering the edge. while I love watching the G2 cars (I had a G2 GTI), seeing the 600hp+ monsters blaze by is an amazing experience.

Thanks folks. There are a number of Rally sanctioning organisations, but the largest is Rally America (Rally America). There are links to both the RA races as well as some other sanctioning bodied races on the site above. I know that NASA (nasa racing) does rally and rally cross and of course SCCA does rally cross only now. Shooting these races is challenging but are a real blast. I am really jealous of those that can get a media pass as they really get the best and more interesting angles.
Press on :)

Hey folks,
My posting has tapered off a bit but I am trying to put more time back into my photography. I shot a Rally this past weekend that I go to every year and had an absolute blast. I shoot fewer and fewer pictures every year at the race (a good thing) and am much more strategic in shooting than I was when I started.
Check out this contest on the Rally America site. If you think it deserves it, please vote for my shot. I'd be willing to bet I'm the only one shooting the upper shots on a K100D. : )

FYI, I purchased but have not yet used this: FotoPlayer - Flash photo Gallery Software
It allows me to keep my host and email yet will build my galleries and also link to a shopping cart. Pretty much exactly what I wanted.

Nice bright sunny days are great. Ever try shooting a Rally car 30 feet from you at 8pm in the winter time? I've used a lot of different cameras, it's pretty clear when one works properly for the application and when one is not suited for the application. When I hit the shutter, I expect it to fire, not hunt - hunt - hunt - hunt - nothing.
That's ok though, some tools are suited for jobs better than others.

I understand what you're saying here, but the technology is in itself influencing my photography. When I want to go out to expand my race car photography, I have a inherent disadvantage over the guy next to me. I have to work a lot harder to get the good shot. It can be done of course, I have hundreds of pictures to prove it. Can it be done as easy, with as little effort, and with a greater ratio of keepers as the guy with the 50D next to me? No.

I don't think complaining is entirely unproductive. There is a vein in market focus for Pentax that largely caters to flower shooters, landscape, and even macro to some degree; with exception of the later, lightning fast AF and FPS are largely irrelevant. Who knows if this is why Pentax does not put much emphasis on sports shooting or if they are simply technologically deficient from an engineering standpoint. It is important for Pentax to know though that there are sports shooters out there with an eye on the K-7 (and next-generation) and an eye on the Canikon. Right now, the mouse cursor is hanging over the Canikon for sports shooting.

If a blower does not work then use (as recommended above) a sensor stick/swab.

Just an alternative, you may want to consider just getting a 1.5x or 2.0x teleconverter to fit your Tamron.

Better be something that can focus fast and sharp, higher FPS, higher ISO capability. I'm done waiting to upgrade. 50D performance or better.
