Manual vs Auto Focus lenses. Understanding available settings.

Hello AnnieK5, I wouldn't feel the pressure to buy any auto focus lenses, unless you really needed them. I have been shooting for years and bought my first autofocus lens 4 months ago. Whether you need one or not is for you to decide. I got one (and then another!) because I thought it would help me take photos of kids who move around too much. But the reality was that I was missing lots more photos with my autofocus lenses, than with manual focus. Until I learned how to use them. So when I shoot landscapes I use manual focus, when I shoot portraits and ask my kids to pose, I use manual focus, when I want to capture their play and use wider apertures, I use auto focus.

If you use a manual focus lens, you won't get auto focus. I believe in that case you can use either Manual or Auto focus setting, as autofocus won't work anyway.

You can use autofocus lenses in manual mode - in that case you just focus it manually, like your manual lenses.

Regarding sharpness, it's not really a matter of autofocus. Improperly focused photos might appear not sharp, but it's just because they are not in focus. People with less than optimal eye sight might get better photos with autofocus. Zeiss lenses are some of the sharpest and they are totally manual.

Icarex to M42 adapter?

Do you guys know if there is an icarex - k mount or icarex - M42 adapter? I searched for it, but couldn't find much, aside from a thread here that said that there used to be an icarex - M42 adapter. If there is no simple adapter, is there another way to mount an icarex lens without surgery?

Yellow words on the left say: "Insert a blade into the connector and gently turn to remove the magnet from the pin"
Words on the right say: "This is our objective: the screw is already taken out"

By the way, reading the whole discussion on the Russian site, they say that using AA batteries instead of the Pentax battery solves the problem. It seems that this magnet thing is a more permanent solution.

Sorry - reading further they say that AA batteries work for some, and seem to delay disease progression, if I may put it like that.

I recently got a Coolscan V ED primarily to scan my grandfather's film collection, and it renewed my interest in the 135 format. As it happens, I don't actually have any working 35mm cameras aside from my grandfather's 3 Zenits and my dad's Kiev 19.

I have a Pentax S that I hope to revive as well.

I've been thinking about getting a camera to use with my M42 lenses, and one of the main requirements is a fast shutter speed. Naturally, LX came to mind. Unfortunately, I sold my LX and I kind of miss it. But when I started thinking of getting one again I remembered the sticky mirror and the ageing circuits... Expensive to repair if it ever breaks...

So I thought about Bessaflex TM... It's newer, has the same shutter speed, and has m42 mount. Seems like a good fit for my needs.

I was wondering if you guys have any ideas about any other m42 body with a fast shutter speed or any ideas regarding LX VS Bessaflex... (I know it's blasphemous to even ask that question, but since I sold my lx there is no hope for me anyway)

Thank you,

Yes, unfortunately I have discovered these in a local bakery a couple of years ago. My excuse is that if I eat those for breakfast I still have plenty of time to work them off (or sleep them off) before the end of the day

You are probably right. The question is, what does competing in DSLR market mean? Pentax is not competing on AF or video (as is well known) or third party lens support, so really, Pentax is competing in a still photo DSLR segment.

Falling sales are bad news for all of us as in the end we might end up with a couple of companies making exclusive handmade cameras for the rich and famous and the rest of us will be using our cell phones (or a 50 year old dslr the way we use our slrs now...)

Tough choice, too many beautiful lenses. I'd say for me it would be 2/58 takumar... Probably my favorite lens. But it's M42. So I'll go with the 43.
