Welcome to Project 52-12, a weekly challenge using a set list of themes and concepts published in advance. The themes can be subject as well as technique oriented.
You may begin your Project 52 at any time, not just at the beginning of the year. The goal is simple -- take one photo a week for 52 weeks for the given theme. Project 52-12
is hosted by one member continuously throughout the year but every week's challenge is judged by the winner of the previous week. Photos can be taken with any camera.

Rules
1. Anyone and everyone who is interested is eligible. The goal is to have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques with fellow Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a theme or a photographic technique for you to explore.
3. Post a single picture in the Project 52 thread for that week. Explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK but try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images. Keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed. Cameras can be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot or Medium Format.
6. There will be one theme challenge labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable.

P52-12-17: Abandoned 4/22-4/28

This week's Project is about looking for the derelict and the desolate. Sometimes referred to as urban exploration we want to find the urban wreckage of a bygone age and capture the long-abandoned decaying structures in all their glory. These may include ruins of old houses, derelict old storefronts, junked cars found in the woods and elsewhere, and sometimes entire abandoned towns. Cities are full of abandoned buildings, disused hospitals, factories, housing complexes, and theme parks. Photographing the abandoned connects us back to a time and place removed from the digital world we inhabit today. Abandoned photography helps keep history alive. This Project is about finding those abandoned places or things, and of course, taking amazing photos of them.

This Project is now closed.

Thank you all for your participation.

Andy-I like the natural framing in this image. Some of those tulips look like they have gone by already.

Jason-Original money frame. Nicely done.

Brad-a colorful and electrifying image for sure.

Noel-a great selfie and those whiskers outside the frame is a nice touch. Do we see you holding the camera?

Noel gets the nod this week. HM to Jason.

Again, well done all and thank you for your submissions. Trust this was easier than the shaped bokeh Project.

Noel, I've used my M50 macro with good results in getting a shaped bokeh background.

I've not tried multiple 'holes', I need to experiment and give that a try. Thanks for the idea.

Sorry the links were not clear. I tend to modify most processes to fit what I have available to work and PP with.

Sorry guys. I didn't expect shaped bokeh to cause so much trouble. Great effort hanging in there and giving it a go.

Andy, I like the low key fell to your image. As noted the bokeh complements the subject well. I like the fish but prefer the first to the second.

Yaki, Great artistic ability and cutting skill. Cool looking shape, like the colors but prefer the bokeh around the subject.

Brad, hope you and your dad recover quickly and completely.

Noel, thanks for sticking in there. Interesting attempts. Looks like the aperture needs to be smaller and perhaps the shape. Amazing how little an opening is needed for this.

Andy gets the nod this week.

Thank you all for your participation. Hopefully you'll find this week's Project easier.

P52-12-16: Framed 4/15 - 4/21

Framing in photography refers to the process of composing a picture. Framing can help draw focus to your subject and so control the viewers attention. It can also provide context and create a sense of depth to the picture so the viewer can imagine themselves in the scene. There are many different ways to frame a photograph. For this challenge you can use natural or manmade frames in your composition. One common method is to use foreground elements to create a literal frame. For example, you could position your subject so trees or branches surround the edge of the photo as a natural frame. Or you could use a window or a doorway in your composition as a manmade frame. Frames can be of any shape and they can take any form as long as they help to draw focus to the subject.

My lens has flat front glass. Not sure how a curve would affect the image.

For light you can shoot against a backlit tree. The sun peaking through the leaves can substitute for fairy lights. Stand in the shade of the tree and hold something to focus on, this assumes you have long enough arms.

Keep trying, that's the spirit. Hope you escape that 'something.'

Well done Andy. The bokeh compliments the key nicely.

---------- Post added 04-14-24 at 07:57 AM ----------

Thanks an impressive shape Yaki. Did you cut that out or use a punch?

Most often I place the lights behind my subject to get the bokeh and erase or clone the bokeh to get the look I want. I typically do not layer the bokeh over my subject.

---------- Post added 04-14-24 at 08:03 AM ----------

Your plate looks kind of 'fat' Brad. The plate should be as close as possible to the lens, typically sitting right on the rim if possible.
When it's too far away, and that varies from lens to lens in my experience, you can get the effect we see in your second photo.

I get my best results with my M50 and the Helios 44M-6.

Go for something simple for your bokeh shape. i.e. use a hole punch and make a shamrock. Easy peasy,

F2-F4 is more than adequate to shale bokeh.

Also, I have my camera at the MFD for the lens I'm using.

P52-12-15: Shaped Bokeh 4/8 - 4/14

It’s amazing what you can do with your camera. Light can be captured in different ways, and this opens up many possibilities for the keen photographer. Creating your own shaped bokeh is a fun and exciting way of shaping light as it enters the camera, and it leads to spectacular results. Bokeh refers to the out-of-focus or blurry regions in a photo that occur outside the depth of field. This is especially evident when you have small background highlights that create high contrast.

P52-12-14: Light 4/1-4/7

Light is one of the most vital and complicated aspects of photography. There are many characteristics to light: natural or artificial; hard or soft; direct or indirect; high key or low key; flash or strobe; position of the light; color temperature of the light to name a few. Photography lighting isn't as mysterious as it sounds. By starting with the basics of photography lighting techniques and playing with a photo light or two, you'll master getting the perfect exposure in no time. Learning to control your photography with lights is one of the best things you can do to improve your photography skills and take your images to the next level.
