Ricoh to get out of camera business?

Ricoh has already put out a statement refuting this.

http://www.itmedia.co.jp/news/spv/1704/12/news063.html

Google translate:

Ricoh's public relations office commented, "While narrowing down product lineups, we are planning to expand high value-added models for individuals in the future."

On April 12, Ricoh refuted "not a fact" about some reports on the same day that the company is considering withdrawing from personal camera business. "Although we will pursue high value-added products by focusing on product lineups, we are not planning on withdrawing from individuals, and we plan to expand high-value-added models for individuals in the future" (Ricoh Public Relations Office).

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun morning edition on the 12th said, "Ricoh will shrink the camera business, we will consider consumer camera business with price competition intensely including withdrawal, concentrate on business use such as for in-vehicle use." The company announced on December 11 that it would record an impairment loss of about 10 billion yen, saying "expected earnings can not be expected for the digital camera business."

The company's press office announced on February 12 against the interview of ITmedia NEWS, "Our lineup of personal digital cameras is based on high-end models such as" GR ", products that make full use of features such as the THETA" all-sky camera " At the center, there are few general compact digital cameras (competing with smartphones intensely) competing in the price. In the digital camera business, we announced impairment on 11th, narrowing down the product lineup and pursuing high value added products Although I do not think about withdrawing from individuals, I plan to extend the value-added model for individuals in the future. The original source (Nokishita-Camera.com) who uncovered the KP registration tweeted a couple more KP things a few days ago. Unless Google's translation is wrong (Twitter's built in translation is unintelligible), it sounds like this will replace the K3ii. I can't tell from Google's translation whether he says a silver KP will be announced now or at a later date. The translations from Google are:

"Confirmation of Pentax KP's coming soon. It is a class equivalent to K - 5 and K - 3 II on the merchandise classification, and it is not an entry model such as K - S2 or K - 70.# Quick News # Rumor"

"Confirm that Pentax KP and a new battery grip D - BG 7 will be announced next week. Silver (number unknown is unknown) is likely to be announced together (undetermined) this time. # Follow-up # rumor"

Japanese website Nokishita Camera is reporting that Pentax has registered a DSLR called the KP in Indonesia:

???????「PENTAX KP」???????????|?????????

Google translates the article as:

"Pentax's unpublished single lens reflex camera "PENTAX KP" has been registered as a certification body in Indonesia.

Indonesia POSTEL (line 95)
Company name: Ricoh Imaging Co., Ltd.
Device name: Single lens reflex camera
Country of origin: Philippines
Registration date: January 11, 2017

It seems that Pentax is preparing a new K mount machine. I think that it is not a rumored vintage mirrorless camera because it is a single lens reflex, but I am looking forward to announcing what kind of model KP will be."

I used to have a K-x and switched to an Olympus micro four thirds in 2013. I also had only a couple Pentax K mount lenses at the time, and much more invested in m42. I really liked my Olympus, but I missed my Pentax much more. So only a few months after selling my K-x (and one K mount lens), I bought back into Pentax. I loved the portability of the Olympus and the color was always spot on, but Pentax IMO had much better controls, and image quality was generally better (I never did get too deep down the rabbit hole of m4/3 lenses though). One of my biggest issues with switching to m4/3 and using my old m42 lenses was the 2x crop factor of the smaller m4/3 sensor. Not even my 20mm was a wide angle on that camera. It took a lot of getting used to my favorite lenses behaving very differently, and that was ultimately the dealbreaker for me. I did keep my Oly for a couple years as a backup camera, but I only used it sparingly. I have tried other mirrorless systems, and I do like Fujis for use with m42 lenses, particularly a small camera with EVF like the XT10, but I still like the Pentax ergonomics, build, and controls more.

Along those lines, one thing to consider regarding the K-3 is that it is a larger and heavier camera than the K-x. When I went back to Pentax, I went with a K-5iis first and I missed the smaller body of the K-x, so I sold that and got a K-01, and then a K-50. If you think you might not like a larger body than the K-x, other cameras to consider would be the K-S2 and K-70. The K-S2 is close in size and weight to the K-x, and the K-70 is close in size (but heavier).

I can see why a matching of these two companies would work. Think of it in terms of the days of m42. It would give customers a lot more choice, which would probably go a long way to attract more customers overall to the system by filling in weaknesses that might normally keep customers away. Fuji goes retro with their body, Ricoh goes modern with their body. Fuji develops more wide primes, particularly on the fast side of things compared to Pentax, while Ricoh/Pentax does more telephoto and zoom. You can choose whether you want the color of X-Trans versus the more common Bayer array. Stabilized lenses from Fuji versus stabilized sensor from Ricoh. This could be a great system for a lot of people. It would also create an ecosystem that might be more attractive to third parties. The more people using the ecosystem, the more chances you have to sell bodies and/or lenses to customers than if they were using another mount. The biggest downside to a system from these two companies right now would probably be that neither company is known for video, which would be something at least one of the companies would have to improve if they wanted to make a catch-all system that could attract the masses.
