D-FA* 85mm f1.4 also coming

* lenses were never as compact as Limiteds, so I think people that want small primes should relax and wait until Ricoh rolls out f1.8/f2 primes. I'm pretty sure there will be something styled like Takumars from bygone era, with DC motors and WR (20 - 40 Limited, anyone?)

Small & light, big & sharp, your K-1 will be great for whichever lens philosophy you go for. :)

As i said earlier, 2017 is the year of the primes..and the future is bright (F-stop bright) :)

And to add to the never-ending discussion about size..I have never said its wrong if you like the small and compact stuff..Good for you..But these new badboys are needed in so many ways..Not only to meet the marked, but more important, they are made to get the best out of the amazing sensor in K-1 and future cameras :) So dont waste anymore energy arguing why this isnt needed because we have the good old ones...

It's all about choice, people.

Want pixie dust? Pentax has three FA limiteds and the biggest backlog of fully compatible legacy lenses of any system.

Want ultimate technical image quality, enough to make Canon/Nikon professionals and prosumers think about switching systems and advance the brand into the future? You need the Holy Trinity of zooms and an Otus-eating fast fifty. For starters.

Aaaaaand, here it is.

There is room in the ecosystem for both. Be happy.

Ok, some of his initial impressions! I was worried about the ergonomics and the front vertical wheel and he told me its a joy to hold and work with! The ergonomics are of the reknown user friendly Pentax level. He had the chance to shoot night city photography and he found the AF to be noticeably improved and very fast in comparison with his K-3II. He didn't expect that as the AF module is basically the same (but seems its not... quite different). Also the high ISO performance is a big improvement and ISO 3200 seems very usable for APS-C sensor. :)

I can't wait to test it myself. I have sent him some more questions until then! If I have any more feedback I will let you know.

You can get in their forums and ask for some new Canonikon equipment with strawberry flavour and whine every time something new comes out and is not strawberry flavoured.

Never let camera features or lack thereof, get in the way of producing your best work.

Although it is virtually impossible to cater for everyone's needs, you should pick something you are comfortable with, and won't be a distraction all the time you are photographing...

It is just a tool, and if a system continuously fail to cater for your specific needs, it is obviously best if you change and hopefully have a nicer experience.

Some of us have come a long way with Pentax and although not always happy, will continue to do so, even when griping all the time, probably because most of us are hobbyist... Just saying:)

You could switch to a film body and avoid the rear screen altogether. Huge battery saver that won't interrupt your workflow.

The Theta is a valid point, but I was talking about Ricoh Imaging - that doesn't include printers or anything else. In fact Ricoh overall is doing worse, but the Imaging business is doing well.

Nope, in both recent financial reports they made specific references to the camera division having increasing profits.

Jeez again, what is it with all the negativity from the eastern bloc

The Tamron lenses, they are Tamron designs Pentax glass and coating, different cost structure, different rendering easy to compare buy the cheap Tamron 70-200 an d the expensive Pentax and compare . Also going outside for this does not mean lost money or zero profit , for years the Tamron partnership was good for both brands then Hoya screwed it up, Particularly in Japan it's not an unusual thing for this type of cross partnership (usually it is tied to a Keiretsu, but not always, for instance Fuji and Sony are part of the same Keiretsu yet are big competitors there is shared tech, Ricoh Canon and Hitachi in the industrial area are part of the same Keiretsu, yet are all fierce competitors , but still will have interaction. Japanese business is very different from the model most of us think of. it ties back to the Zaibatsu pre war and going back to the 19th century essentially family controlled monopolies. when they were disbanded by law variants on the ideas of co-operating came about through banking groups instead)
yes they are expensive but no they are not identical lenses (when they have done that with just a coating change the pentax still outperformed the Tamron and sold at a higher price - the old 28-20 is a good example , neither were great but the pentax was better

yes mass produced lenses like the plastic fantastics sell more volume....at slimmer margins so they have to

and no without verifiable published numbers your K1 sales hypothesis is just that a hypothesis .

You are talking about kit prices with the 18-135 The K3-II is €949 and the K-70 €699 The KP will be €1299 at launch. It will drop soon enough to 999 is my guess.

The K-S1 was actually a couple grams lighter than the K-01, but We Do Not Speak of it. :D When that which We Do Not Speak came out, a number of folks were attracted to the small size for hiking/travel, but the lack of WR was a dealbreaker. The KP may be the camera for them.

Has to be, it had to be registered as a wi-fi device in Indonesia. Maybe some function not printed on the top dial yet?

The settings dial could be an improvement on the K-1 one because of what I assume are user configurable c1, c2, c3 settings. This completely changes things compared to the K-1 don't you think?

I could also imagine the front e-dial working quite well. It sticks out a fair bit in such a way I imagine you can scroll it almost like a horisontal one. Plus with smaller bodies the way you hold the camera changes, at least with me the hands become more vertical which might again suit the arrangement of dials and buttons. I'm looking forward to trying it!

They should have photographed it with the da 21ltd or the 70ltd it's a camera for us limited shooters! (the zoom is barely a limited right...)

I have spoken with one of the lucky guys who have tried the camera.

Just wait to hold it and try it too before coming to early conclusions.

I won't reveal any details as they will be announced soon but be optimistic that this is a camera that is also well based on those characteristics that made Pentax stand out of the crowd. What concerns me though are those leaks about pricing...

Good catch. My own translation is as follows.

Twitter (sent Friday morning, Japanese time)

"It is confirmed that Pentax KP will be announced soon. As for market positioning, it's equivalent to K-5 and K-3, not an entry-level model such as K-S2 or K-70."

Twitter (sent Friday night JST)

"It is confirmed that Pentax KP and battery grip D-BG7 will be announced next week (*). A silver version is likely to be announced at the same time (whether it's a limited edition [or a regular model] is unknown)."

(*) "Next week" last Friday = this week. We know the announcement shall take place on Thursday the 26th at 7am JST.

A camera that also can be used to draw a fresh, frosty mug of beer. Just the ticket on a hot summer day of landscape shooting, or after an arduous afternoon in the park surreptitiously shooting strangers.

Nice!
