I took this shot today at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Inwood (nyc). FYI, I lowered the exposure in post on purpose. All and any feedback is welcome.

Stay away from smudges unless you can have confirmation that it's a smudge & nothing else-I got a lens in the mail today that turned out to have haze & fungus (Ebay has proven to be 50/50 for me). When it comes to scratches you should try to get as much info as possible. My photography mentor once bought a lens with a scratch, he then noticed a rattling sound which turned out to be a loose element. I don't know what could cause that but considering the scratch I think it may have suffered strong impact.

Throwing my two cents in, I have the sigma 17-50 2.8 & love it. I tripped while using it on my k-5 & the lens survived (had a UV filter & lens hood to cushion the blow). Because I want the WR construction of the 16-50 I plan on evetually going for the 20-40 ltd, if you need the constant 2.8-just do the Sigma, it really does its job well.

Thanks for your input everyone! I was able to pick up the M 50mm 1.7 & the DA* 55mm 1.4 & the vivitar 135mm 1:2.8 auto & stick to my budget!

Hello everyone! Some lens advice please
I want to start shooting portraits more (just for fun) but I would like to add a new lens to my bag to specialize in that. I've looked at numerous options but at the moment I'm stuck between a cosina 55mm 1.2 or the DA* 55mm 1.4 (I would probably exclusively use manual focus on the DA*). I've also considered the FA 43mm as well as the HD DA 70mm 2.4, but sadly the 77 ltd is too much for my budget right now. What I'm looking for is a lens with a distinct effect to it. The main reason I'm considering the DA* is because of its weather sealing & auto aperture although I've seen some great shots produced by this lens that makes me feel it does have that something special. I've seen what the cosina can do-I'm convinced by its IQ & bokeh but not having the f-stop recorded in the metadata sucks-having a pen & paper handy isn't something I've bee able to add into my habits while shooting. the same applies for the FA43 ltd. Now when it comes to the HD DA 70mm, it appears to me to be a solid performer & possibly more versatile. I guess I want to keep the price at or under $500 & I've seen all the options at prices fitting the bill. I'd appreciate any & all feedback :D

I have the DFA 100mm & use it for a lot more than macro shots but if you're looking for something flexible I think the suggestions to go with the 60-250 or the 70-200 are spot on. Remember that the crop factor needs to be taken into consideration though & I believe the Tamron is a FF lens as well which is a plus that the DFA 100mm shares.

That does make it very clear. Thank you for pointing it out. I think it's a combination of the paint on the bricks & the stitching process as when I look at some of the individual shots, some of the patterns aren't as pronounced. I'm gonna revisit this scene to be really sure. Thanks again for your feedback!

Thanks a lot! The lighting was tricky because this scene was in a narrow walkway so there wasn't much space for the light to more fully illuminate the scene. I'm not sure what you mean about the vertical issue but I shot this handheld so that may have something to do with that if not the stitching.

This is my first panorama! I shot six images, processed them in DxO Optics Pro 10. I exported the processed files as JPEGS because my PC doesn't have much processing power & then used Microsoft's ICE 2.0 to stitch them together. All & any feedback would be appreciated.

I really like the lighting & colors for 6, 7, 9 & 10-they're really great examples of chiaroscuro (IMHO). The color contrast in 6 is also really attractive since the window frames frame her face but also stand out from the cool color of the building. What lens(es) did you shoot these with if you don't mind me asking? Great work & thanks for sharing!

Welcome & happy holidays to you too! If you're in NYC try stopping by Van Cortlandt park to catch some chipmunks, skunks & foxes if you're lucky

I tried shooting some overlapping shots today & it definitely made a difference. I was trying to get everything in one shot & it wasn't happening. I'm still learning how to work with PS but I'm more excited now that I have something real to apply it to. Thanks a lot for the advice. ---------- Post added 12-21-15 at 09:29 PM ----------
My mind=blown. I'm going to take a look at that app. Setting up a calendar sounds like a fun project in of itself. Thanks again!

Thanks! Those are good ideas regarding the parked cars. I know this area pretty well but I'm starting to notice how different the light is during the winter. I know that Earth is in a different position for winters & the general changes that come with it regarding light but I hadn't realized how much that can affect a familiar area. I'm thinking of taking a weekend to observe how the light changes throughout the day.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it's really appreciated. I haven't used the K-5's built in sensor shift yet, but I plan on getting some practice with it tomorrow. This is a shot I took yesterday-it wasn't planned though, I was by the Church & had my camera so figured why not? I used the viewfinder's level meter but I think the street itself isn't flat on this part of Broadway, then again I was shooting handheld so it could have been me. I haven't done anything to this shot other than crop it but I plan on messing around with the options in LR. Thanks again for the feedback!

I'm currently learning how to use PS (usually use LR). I'm definitely going to try my hand at working it out in post but because of my lack of skills with PS I want to try to get the best shot I can in camera.

Hey there folks,
I'm planning a personal project involving shooting pictures churches in my area. I bought the HD DA 15mm a few days ago & I'm really digging it. I'm wondering if some experiences on shooting buildings & their interiors without a tilt/shift lens can be shared. The only tilt/shift within reason (for me & my budget at the moment) is the Rokinon 24mm but I haven't heard much about the lens in this application. Also, I've never used a tilt/shift lens before so while I understand in theory what they can do, I don't know what the actual effect on the image and on my shooting in the field will be. I know what I don't want as my final image: https://flic.kr/p/Ar3gZU, https://flic.kr/p/B1x2X6. I'm hoping to maneuver enough to capture images closer to: https://flic.kr/p/w1AxrR, https://flic.kr/p/yedQec, or https://flic.kr/p/xhkvfV. I know the last two are interior shots but I haven't had much luck in getting many perpendicular/straight on shots of building exteriors. I'm not sure if I'm making much sense here.
Is getting a shot with minimal distortion a matter of finding the right distance & holding the camera sensor at the right altitude while perpendicular? All and any comments are welcome & if I'm getting anything wrong here please feel free to correct me, I'm still green & appreciate the feedback.

That's really cool. I don't do this kind of shooting (live in NYC-too much light pollution where I'm at) so I really like seeing what people produce through astro-photography. Thanks for sharing!
