That's what I was thinking. It did work for a while but maybe it was only half on or something?

I'm not sure what happened but today I started having an issue with the shutter button on my K-3. If I press it down like I normally do there's no resistance and I have to push it much deeper than normal to take the photo. Any ideas what happened?
Any way to fix it myself? I just (within the past month) sent it in to Precision to replace the mode dial which stopped working and now it's out of warranty. Very frustrated. Thanks!

I understand those are Best Practices in the link above, but to me if I have to do all that there's really no benefit to having weather resistance. One of the reasons I went with Pentax is because of the WR. Technically Best Practice when raining would be to just stay indoors. ;-)

I also shoot my son's soccer games. I had the 55-300 PLM out in a torrential downpour one game with no covering and had absolutely no issues with getting water in the lens.
On a somewhat related not the only issue I've ever had with Pentax WR is when I went on the Hornblower at Niagara Falls and took the 18-135 out practically under the Falls. I did have a couple drops of water get inside the lens but it dried and I've had no issue otherwise.

I think I'll send it in. My extended warranty actually runs out the middle of Sept so if it's going to do it this isn't the worst.

Everything else seems to be working propely. Updating firmware and spinning the dial does not seem to work. ---------- Post added 09-01-18 at 10:46 AM ---------- Is the next step sending it in for repair?

So it seems that when I turn the mode dial on my K-3 it doesn't change anything. Is there an easy fix for this or what do I need to do? Soccer season is just starting so it's not good timing!

The Xpro-P looks like a good option. I think in my case I may just go with the Phottix Ares II for now. The reason being that I can get a receiver/transmitter set for $55 whereas I'd spend more than that for half the set otherwise.
As a beginner who doesn't know how much I'll be doing ocf that seems to be make the most financial sense for now.
Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for the response! If I only wanted to control power on the flash remotely do both the transmitter and receiver have to have that function or only the transmitter? Is it possible to use a Godox X1C to control power on a flash that has a Phottix Ares receiver for instance? Or would that not work because they're different brands?

Hi,
I'm looking at getting a simple light stand/umbrella setup to try out ocf and looking at the Strobist to learn. I have a K-3 and a Metz 52 AF-1 right now.
The Strobist recommends the Phottix Ares Tx/Rx. It's cheap which is good but very basic.
My question is do I really need a wireless controller to do things like HSS and remotely control power? Is there a Tx/Rx set that can do that relatively cheaply? (Under $100) And what would that recommendation be?
The world of wireless controllers is very confusing. It seems like many controllers will only do HSS and power control if you also use the same brand flash? Or is that not correct?
Will anything do those functions with my Metz at a reasonable price or should I stick with the simple Phottix Ares to start? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thoughts on purchasing a used battery on BHPhoto? I'm looking at either a Pentax or Watson brand with condition 9. Wasn't sure is a battery was something I should get new or if I should be okay saving some money. Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I'll keep reading through the blog. It does seem like triggers that control flash power are better but they're also much more expensive. I'm not looking for another flash yet so the Jumpstarter kit was what I was looking at.

The only thing I have right now is the flash so that's why I thought the package might be useful since it has the stand, radio triggers, swivel, and umbrella. Plus it has the DVDs he put out. I'll read more of the 101 stuff too. I've just skimmed so far.

Nevermind. Amazon Warehouse deals had the PLM for $353 in Like New condition. Looks like that's my new lens!

Okay, last question I think. I'm basically trying to decide if it's worth getting the 55-300 PLM now or waiting to see if a Sigma 100-300 f4 comes along. They seem to go for a good chunk of change more but I'm trying to decide if it might be worth it. I don't have many night games now but may in a couple years. Anyone have any experience with both?

Thanks DrawsACirlce, that helps a lot. The last thing I'd want to do is spend the money to get the new version and have it focus quickly but inaccurately!

I'm still debating the PLM lens for now. After reading the review on this site it seems to have some issues tracking? Would this apply to soccer players as well or just extremely fast animals? Ideally I think I'd like the Sigma 100-300 f4 but they seem to be significantly more expensive and hard to find.

Are there any other lenses I should consider? I definitely can't afford the 150-450 and the 300 might be too limiting being a prime because sometimes the action does come closer. Would any lenses be substantially better than the PLM and under $1,000? I know there's the bigma but it's also very heavy. Is anything else worth considering that's a sharp zoom with at least 300mm reach for under $1,000 used?

Most games are in the middle of the afternoon so I generally have enough light. I'm using AF-C with Sel 2 and Continuous shooting on High. I try to use around 1/1250 between f 5.6-10 and let the ISO float in TAv.
For options I use Focus Priority for 1st Frame, Focus-priority for Action in AF.C Continuous, with Medium Hold AF Status. I also use back button focusing.
Sometimes they'll be out of focus coming toward me and other times running side to side. I also have issues with sharpness but I think some of them are related to lower apertures at long focal distances.
And yes, I forgot to mention originally that I have a K-3.

I don't see the option to rent this lens on lensrentals. Anyone know of a place to do so?
