Interesting article about film in 2017

Hey -- you don't need to own an old camera. This is an ideal time to buy one. Lots of barely used fine film cameras are cheaply available.

I had a nice ZX-5n but could not resist upgrading to a like new PZ-1p for $50. Given the price of film and processing it makes little sense not to use a fine older camera. For digital Pentax users with a full frame "K mount" lens, the opportunity to shoot film with a fine camera has never been better.

Processing of a 35mm 36 frame roll is $11 bucks for development and scanning. (+postage)

Digital and Film ... what a deal.

Mirror Lockup on PZ-1p (confusion)

On photo.net a few folks stated that the PZ-1p had mirror lockup.
Here on the forum the camera review sheet states no mirror lockup.

I just bought a used PZ-1p and the manual says nothing about mirror lockup.

Does the PZ-1p have mirror lockup?

If it does, how is it implemented?

YES.. that is the lens.. Excellent - glad to know aperture can be adjusted by hand.

Will this lens work as well with Black & White or Color slide films as it does with digital?

I've always wondered if lenses designed for digital camera use will perform well on film.

Which camera after 7 years with K-x

I bought a Nikon V1 when they were blowing them out some years ago.
$400 for body and 10-30mm zoom and 30-110mm zoom (crop factor 2.7)

That camera has incredible focus speed and accuracy.
With extension tubes it maybe the best tool for extreme macro close ups due to amazing focusing.

It also does fairly well with video. With an older 1" sensor ... not good in low light.

You might take a look at the current Nikon J5 with excellent modern sensor
with 10-30 zoom (35mm equivalent 27-81mm) => $500

with 10-30 zoom and 30-110 zoom (equivalent 81-297mm) => $750

or with 10-100 zoom (equivalent 27mm-270mm) => $1050

Check out Thomas Stirr Photography for amazing macro photos.
Thomas Stirr Photography -

Nikon has decided to cancel their new 1" sensor DL camera, which could mean increased emphasis on Nikon 1 system.

I bought a Nikon 1 system power zoom made for video and it worked very well.
Nikon 1 NIKKOR 10-100mm f/4.5-5.6 AS VR IF CX HRI ED Lens (PD-ZOOM)
which is about $300 used today.

I have a question about the Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX DG Macro
which is designed for Pentax auto focus digital cameras
and is a full frame lens.

Can this lens be used on a non-auto focus film camera
like the k1000?
Can the f stop be set manually on this lens?

TIA -- Dan

I remember the slide projections at home in the 1950s and 1960s as well as my father's B/W prints from his darkroom in the basement. He had an Exacta bought new and a Rollicord from the classified for $75. He produced some amazing photos.

For me the best bang for the buck today are slides. I bought a barely used Mamiya CabinPro 6x7 projector. No scanning needed or wanted.

Film hit its peak in 2003 and today the market is 2% of the 2003 market. Cell phone cameras are where the big money is today, not in film.

Most everything changes over time. Enjoy what you have today and plan a little for the changing tomorrow.

Mamiya M645 to K mount adapters?

The weight of larger heavier medium format lenses could damage the Pentax K camera body.

B&H sells a Mamiya 645 to Pentax K adapter for about $50

B&H sells a Bronica GS-1 PG to Pentax K adapter for about $130

The Bronica adapter includes a tripod foot to better support the heavy PG lenses.

Beware... be careful out there.

---------- Post added 02-05-17 at 03:17 PM ----------

The Mamiya 645 adapter looks pretty interesting if you have either or both of these two lenses.

80mm f1.9
soft focus 145mm f4

Anyone who has shot either of these on a Pentax digital?
What were the results like?

Note: the 80mm f1.9 is not cheap used these days. You would spend about the same as for a new Rokonon 85mm 1.4

Just saw that Nikon is selling the 24-120mm VR f/4 lens

with the D750 for $2,300

with the D810 for $3,300

These prices seem to be lower than before.

Could the Pentax K-1 be influencing Nikon's pricing?

None are silver as all are black.

The 43mm 1.9 Silver is gone.

Will the 43mm 1.9 black lens be leaving any time soon?

The k3 was producing better results than the k3 ii
for astrophotography. The k3 tracked significantly better than the k3 ii.

Currently the ring flash sells for $447 new at B&H with shipping included, this would include a one-year warranty. I think your $375 plus shipping might be too high for this incredible flash to sell.

It has been stated that the
K3 ii Astrotracer function is NOT as good as
the K3 with the
Pentax O-GPS1

It is reported that star trails show up sooner on the K3 ii
and that the K3 with O-GPS1 can get at least double the exposure time

before star trails appear.

Ricoh GR : flash advice

I just purchased a slightly used Ricoh GR
I am looking for flash advice.

The Ricoh GF-1 is huge but if not intended for the street seems OK.

The Ricoh GF-1 was designed for the Ricoh GXR but is supposed to be fully functioning with the GR.
It promises TTL. (At B&H $207; but (closing out?) in HongKong it appears on EBAY at $56.)

The online guru BigHeadTaco.com finds the GR an amazing camera and for street use uses
the FujiFilm EF-X20 Flash. ($176 at B&H). A size that fits the camera.

Looking for advice on a flash for the Ricoh GR.

Agree ..... and ....

So with the K3 ii current features and resolution .... how big will I need to print to where I would see a noticeable improvement from the new Pentax FF?
[Disregarding Bokeh, low light and really wide landscapes where FF may excel, do I really see an FF in my future? ]

Perhaps Nikon 1 system may have had it correct for the long haul. As sensors improve and more folks are content to be Facebook photographers and with smaller residences few folks will be printing larger than 12 x 18. Perhaps the 1" sensor is where we are headed. At least if I reach age 85 in 16 years, I might be able to carry a large Nikon 1 kit..... or will i need to go to a Pentax Q?

I am really pleased with what I see so far for the new FF. I was seriously thinking about a k3; but then I made a trip to Costco and looked through a Nikon 7200 with kit zoom. I regained my sanity and realized I want FF with the brighter viewfinder. Having spent my younger days with a 50mm 1.7 or 1.4 on a film camera, I yearn for a better view finder image. (I like my son's Nikon D700 viewfinder) I will be holding out for the Pentax FF but I will not be in the first wave of purchasers. With a crop size of around 16 mpx I wonder how good low light performance with be in APS-C mode. Any chance it will be better than the K3 ii for low light performance in crop mode?

Resolution and iMac 27" 5k

Michael stated: As such, I would go out on a limb here and state that 5Mp is likely more than enough to "fill" a 27" screen -- regardless of its inherent specified "resolution".
============

The deal is.... I have a fairly extensive collection of Nikon 1 lenses and a Nikon V1 "10MP". I do like that camera's size. I would be even happier with a Nikon V2 for handling. Nikon 1 is very nice for hiking and biking and the video is OK for my limited use.

On the other hand, I have a k100d "6 MP" that has great color. Both the V1 and the k100d leave a lot to be desired in low light situations.

I have some OK but not super older FA lenses from film days and a couple of "A" lenses (Lester Dine 105 f/2.8 macro and Vivitar series 1 70-210 komine v3 f/2.8-4) ... Every lens I own is FF ready.

I guess I am going to sit on the bench until I buy that iMac 27" 5k ... and figure out where to go next. For inside winter sports neither the k100d nor the V1 is very good because of low light in many school gyms. My major interest going forward is landscape.
I really like the V1 for macro work -- love the Macro stuff from Thomas Stirr

Guess I will wait for Pentax FF and Nikon V4 .... and then perhaps buy a k3 or V4
or just forget this line thinking and use my 6x7 Bronica and scan film. With this many choices I am going to wait for a while.

Thanks to all who put in their 2 cents thus far.

Resolution and iMac 27" 5k

Have I got this correct?

I acknowledge that for Facebook upload photos, it does not require a high resolution photo. There is no need to purchase high quality photographic cameras for Facebook.

What about the iMac 27" Retina 5k screen? 14.7 million pixels 5120 x 2880

If I am taking photos for viewing directly on the iMac, will I be able to detect the output of cameras that produce higher resolution photos as superior?

Assuming the use of fabulous lenses, where is line at which the high resolution quality will be of value or not?

K100d 6 MP
K10d 10 MP
K20d 14 MP
K30 16 MP
K3 24 MP

For Facebook the K100d is great .... but what about for the iMac 27" Retina 5k 14.7 million pixels 5120 x 2880

Thanks,

Dan
