Downtown St. Louis from 13th St. Eastbound over Old Courthouse through / to Gateway Arch, multiple landscape / architecture possibilities. Pre-sunrise over horizon across Mississippi River, especially if weather favors light cloudiness in morning. There’s a brief period of color bands from deep blue to orange red.

Other potential locations for interesting light include Missouri Botanical Garden, Forest Park, Washington University Campus, Clayton cityscapes and multiple river scenic on the east, north and south of the city proper.

Unfortunately the elevation of St. Louis is from about 550’ - about 750’ above sea level, so it is essentially flat and covered with trees that obscure views. There are of course hundreds of little spots but a large dramatic area is less common (see above). You need a hotel with a balcony to get any elevation (Chase, Ritz Carlton). Everything else is private, parks or forest walks.

St. Louis had its economic peak in 1904 - so it is an old, tired industrial landscape - maybe something there for you.

K-1 HDR Settings Question
Posted By Adam

For in-camera JPEGs, HDR 1 is the weakest and HDR 3 is the strongest. Auto picks one of the three, usually HDR 2 (not sure what it's based on). On top of this, you also get to choose the EV spread in the menu.

Advanced HDR is essentially HDR 2 with an additional boost to contrast and saturation. See an example at the bottom of this page:
Pentax K-1 Review - General Image Quality | PentaxForums.com Reviews

Or in the middle of this page, which compares a JPEG HDR to a standard RAW with a strong shadow/highlight boost:

K-1 HDR Settings Question

I have never done HDR in either post or in camera. I would like to try the in camera HDR in my new K-1. There are five settings in menu 3 for the HDR function (in addition to off), Auto, 1,2,3, and ADV and I can't find any explanation or definitions of these in the operating manual. Any help in understanding these would be appreciated. Also, is there any reason not to use the auto align setting (landscape scene on a tripod)? Thanks.

The K-1 uses the same flash protocols and has the same restrictions as other recent Pentax bodies. A significant restriction related to HSS is that the camera provides NO sync above the x-sync speed unless a P-TTL flash or trigger in HSS mode is detected on the hot shoe. The Neo 2 only supports this feature with wireless trigger. The details of how the Neo 2 works with Pentax for this are in the user manual.

That's a very good combination, Fred. If you reckon it'll just be a platform for your old glass, you might be very surprised by what that 'kit lens' can do versus legacy primes and use it more and more ... :)

Lot's of good responses here.

Buy Pentax if you can find what you need now. It would seem many of the loudest detractors bought into Pentax expecting them to become something else, and then endlessly harangue the forum with their disappointment.

My advice pay attention to this page. And watch the interview.
CP+ 2018 Pentax Interview - CP+ 2018 | PentaxForums.com

Take what the man says verbatim. Ignore the nay sayers and speculators on the forum. This man may not be the most expansive or eloquent, but he lays out the official Pentax position accurately and precisely, and with no hype or rah, rah.

And honestly, what he says makes me pretty happy. It says, the things Pentax doesn't do now like mirrorless and 4k video, they have nothing in the works, with the 4k mirrorless depending on sensor capable of doing it.

It says they are working on some stuff, but you can see, it's a slow process.

The K-1ii has an improved AF system, but they aren't trying to make an action camera.

People like myself (K-1 and K-3 ) who are happy with their gear are generally happy because it's value priced performance option. We don't actually expect Pentax to come out with cutting edge high tech gear. We expect good solid "good at what it does" gear.

I've used Pentax forever, in part because forever Pentax has made good solid gear that takes pictures of the quality I need.

Other people need more than I do. Make sure you aren't one of them before you buy into Pentax.

You only need to ask one question.

Do Pentax cameras do what I need a camera do. If the answer is yes, welcome to the club. If not, please move on, we have way too many who want Pentax to be more than what they are. Their constant disappointment with Pentax being unwilling to change it's stripes is depressing.

IMHO that guy in the video is Pentax... love it or leave it. :D

PS My wife and I had a brief foray into the craft show market. We went to shows where there were 5 or 6 other photographers shooting Nikon and Canon there and we outsold all of them at one show by a factor of about 10:1. Maybe we didn't match them in every category, but in the categories Pentax is strong in we were able to make up for not having all the bells and whistles of the the other companies. You don't get everything in Pentax, but for an outdoor wilderness/wildlife shooter, they have more than enough.

I ditched all my Canon gear to buy 645z and K1 systems so that should say something about Pentax. IMO pentax has the best landscape photography cameras on the market at the moment it's just a shame that all those 'pro' youtubers and photographers out there either don't realise it or are too afraid to try something different.

The question to ask is - what lens capability will you need/want for the K-1 that isn't available? It doesn't matter if brand X has 100 lenses in their catalog if they don't have the lens you need and brand Y does. Conversely, if brand X has 10 lenses in their catalog and these 10 fully complete your photographic needs, you're set.

I've no comment on your landscape requirement. Still life? Usually nothing exotic required. Macro? The DFA100mm macro is (IMO) a reason to use Pentax, nothing comes close to its size with other brands. The DFA50mm is also top notch. Pentax lacks a current 200mm macro (but has world class options occasionally available used) and it lacks Canon's fancy MPE65mm specialty lens. If you need/want either of those, look elsewhere. For most users, I'd suggest Pentax has all they need. Plus it's nice to not have those $10k telephoto options available for Pentax - I can then moan about Pentax holding me back (even though I can't afford one and would probably never buy one even if I could, it's nice to have something pointless to complain about).

I guess I will give my two cents.

Pentax isn't a tech company, they are a photographic company. As such, they release cameras with excellent ergonomics and still photo qualities. The feature sets on their cameras are interesting and they seem to look for places in the market where they don't match up directly with Canon and Nikon offerings, but rather target their cameras between those of their competitors.

As far as their sales force in North America, it isn't very robust. Pentax has pretty much decided that they will be more aggressive in Asia and particularly in Japan at selling cameras, but in the United States they primarily do it through online sales. They are a small company and keep their prices cheaper by not investing a lot in a sales force. It works for me, but may not work for everyone.

It is clear that Ricoh (who owns the Pentax camera brand) is a good sized company (bigger than Nikon, smaller than Canon) that has made some investment in cameras and will continue to do so. If you need spec monster cameras that are doing 15 to 20 frames per second and 4K video, then Pentax is probably not the brand for you. But if you like cameras with excellent ergonomics, solid builds, and top notch image quality then Pentax will continue to be one of the top brands out there.

In addition to the links Adam provided, you may also want to look at this list of
FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new
. In addition to that, there are many, many more lenses that you can buy on the used market, some of them being excellent performers despite being developed for film.

If there is an issue with lens selection choices for Pentax, it is when you need primes with silent focusing. For those who are fine with -- or even prefer -- screw drive lenses, there is plenty of choice.

How do you arrive at "60"?

The "FF lenses for the K-1 that can be bought new" list features about 98 lenses.

My father had an SV (still does actually), and because of Pentax awareness and the realization I could use his lenses, I bought a K1000 when they were first new on the market. From there, I upgraded to an ME Super that still serves me well and is sitting just out of reach as I type this. The digital age hit, life was complicated (have since jettisoned her...), DSLRs were expensive, and sadly, photography went by the wayside for too many years. In 2016, I decided enough was enough. I looked around at a combination of vintage K mount and M42 Pentax lenses and without hesitation went looking to see what Pentax had to offer. The K3II had recently been released, I read a few reviews, which were all pretty positive, did some quick price/feature comparison checks with Canikon, realized they didn't come close for dollar spent, and ordered the K3II. What a great camera. Wow. As I was getting to know the K3II, the K-1 entered my field of view. It went on the short list. I knew I wanted a sensor the same size as my 35mm film. This was something else I had been waiting for years before shelling out the big camera bucks. I shot what seemed to me a lot of Kodachrome 64 - remember getting a chuckle when the guy at the local photo shop asked me if I was a pro (am not) because he didn't have too many people who showed up and bought a dozen rolls of Kodachrome all at once. So, I was kinda addicted to the stuff and what it had to offer, and for years, that was my digital holy grail - would it give me what I perceived Kodachrome did in resolution and detail and range? Well, the answer is yes, and more.

So the short answer is, Pentax will not hold you back, only you will. There really isn't much you can't do with these cameras, and when you think of things like the astrotracer, and pixel shift, and IBIS, there's a lot these cameras can do that none of the competition does out of the box. Yes, Canikon can beat the AF and FPS stats, but that will not make you a better photographer. So, leverage the glass you have, stop worrying about troll bait, buy a current Pentax, and enjoy the good life knowing you are part of the select few that have figured it out and have a clue.

I am a fanboy of the Pentax K-1, I have to admit it. To my eyes, K-1 is the most clever DSLR FF OVF camera ever made for photographers... I do not use Pentax lenses but I tried some of them before I bought the K-1 for my leica-R lenses. The 15-30/2.8 is fantastic, the 24-70/2.8 excellent (but I prefer the rendering of the 15-30) and the last 70-200/2.8 excellent too... What else?
The best way to use your gear today IMHO, is to buy excellent vario lenses and some primes for very specific considerations (focal length, aperture of 1:1.4, macro lenses for example...). Pentax has got all of them even if pentaxians still wait for new HD lenses.. I am talking about photography, not about video. I am also a fan of manual focusing, so I do not mind about autofocus, not at all. And I can make sport action photos without any problem...
I bought K-1 not because it is the greatest camera in terms of specifcations but just according to my needs: a compromise between great resolution and the manner in which the camera manages the digital noise with the best iso-variance on the market that makes the best DSLR camera to my eyes, even today... Dynamic, fine gradation between shadows and highlights, the quality of pentaprism (excellent), the clever design of the mirror and his astonishing vibrations absorption, his grip, strong feeling of robustness, IBIS/SR, Pixel Shift resolution...
People says that K-1 is out of the race but no one describes Leica (Three times more expensive) with Leica SL and two vario lenses until now. Leica users were waiting in the wings for SL 50, SL 75 and SL90 for years and nobody complained about it... Because Leica SL is compatible with M-lenses, R-lenses, T-lenses and other brands via (very expensive) adapters?! In fact, Leica SL buyers just used SL vario 24-90 & 90-280 lenses... waiting for SL primes.
Pentaxians are not competing with Canikon. Canon is in the arms race with Nikon and vice versa, but what about Pentax? Ricoh just thinks for the best clever toy for photographers, that's all... And when you are not dependent on a trademark (as I am), you can tell the truth. I can't get rid of my leica-R lenses, with their strength and their weakness, with their pros and cons, but because of it, I feel more impartial, objective and able to speak freely. Because I can switch from a brand to another without mercy to fit with my Leica-R lenses...
Do not buy a camera on the paper, go and try it. Pentax K-1 is a gorgeous camera, no doubt, and I love playing with it...

The original poster is worried there might not be enough lenses for the K-1

Of the options currently available to purchase brand new, I have the following:

Samyang 12/2.8 fisheye (it's manual focus and not made by Pentax, but the IQ is great)
DFA 15-30/2.8 (Tamron design with a Pentax flourish - at least the equal of the Big Boys' ultrawide zooms)
DFA 24-70/2.8 (likewise)
DFA 28-105/3.5-5.6 (possibly the best kit zoom out there)
FA 31/1.8 limited (fast wide angle of almost mythical status)
Sigma 35/1.4 Art (super-sharp no-compromise modern wide angle)
FA43/1.9 limited (character-laden ultra-compact true normal)
DA* 55/1.4 (99% full frame, and all of that 99% is glorious)
FA 77/1.8 limited (one of the greatest portrait lenses ever designed)
DFA 100/2.8 macro WR (super-compact, high quality 1:1 macro)
DFA* 70-200/2.8 (top-notch modern hero zoom)
DA* 300/4.0 (officially FF compatible and just remarkable optically)

I also have highly regarded legacy primes covering 20/2.8, 24/2.0, 28/2.8, 50/1.2 and 85/1.4. There are of course many dozens of others in the second hand marketplace.

The DFA* 50/1.4 is about to hit the market, and Pentax has a star quality 85/1.4 and fast wide prime roadmapped, as well as a fisheye zoom and a couple of telezooms.

If I were heavily into wildlife, and willing to carry the bulk and weight, I could also have the superb DFA 150-450/4.0-5.6 and DA 560/5.6. But I'm not.

There are numerous third party lenses from Samyang/Rokinon, Irix, Venus and Laowa, including weather sealed ultra-wide angles, a tilt/shift wide angle, and super fast portrait primes.

I consider Pentax shooters to be spoiled for choice :)

I've used/owned Pentax cameras since Feb, '68. But I've also used/owned other camera makes in the past 5 decades. Mamiya medium format, Leica Range Finder, Zeiss Super Ikonta, Canon, Olympus, Yashicamat, Panasonic etc. Still do. They're all good cameras, but in the main, Pentax both in film and digital have always been my prime system.

I like the reliability, durability, ergonomics, lenses, camera bodies and most of all the images that I've got from my Pentax equipment. When I went into digital in 2005 (I think :D) I got a small Panasonic. It was ok and it served it's purpose, which was to try out digital and see if this new format for me, was for me.

I liked digital, but wanted a DSLR. I looked at the ist D and it didn't appeal to me. I tried out the Canon 20D, the Nikon...but I didn't like the ergonomics. At this point I didn't know whether I would stay with Pentax or make the break and go with another brand.

I liked the Nikon D200. But then the Pentax K10D came out, I read about it, checked it out at the local camera store. It really appealed to me, I bought one with a Pentax 16-45 lens. Then got a 55-300.

I've stuck with Pentax and kept on buying Pentax gear. Km, K5, K-1 bodies...all sorts of Pentax digital lenses. I've been pleased with the equipment, pleased with the images.

Do I worry about whether Pentax will stay in business. Sometimes yes, but they seem to continue to bring out really good equipment, even if I can't figure out their marketing strategy. It's low key, kind of like Pentax cameras/lenses. Low key but really good stuff.

Back in the mid '70's , when I only had one Pentax body (S1a) and a couple of lenses, I almost bought a Nikon F Photomic body and Nikkor 50mm F 1.4 lens. I hemmed and hawed, then decided on getting a Pentax ES ll, which I still have...and still like.

Photography is a passion of mine, I love few things better than walking around with one of my Pentax bodies/lenses and snapping away. Mostly it's a singular pursuit as although I do photography with others, I find I concentrate much better on the business of producing images when I'm alone .

Pentax equipment have generally been my favoured photography tool of choice. :)

Don't know if my ramblings helped, but your thread triggered me to look back and analyze what I like about photography and the equipment I prefer to use. So thank you, OP for that opportunity.

Also good luck with your decision...most of us have been there doing the same thing. Should I or shouldn't I...kind of deal. In the end I believe you'll come up with the right decision for you.

Currently available new FF (not including legacy lenses or crop sensor lenses that have been proven to work fine on FF):

Nikon: 234
Canon: 207
Sony: 70
Pentax: 60

Yes, there is room for improvement and yes, you have more options with Canikon, but a photographer that finds 60 as too little is missing something else.

I've shot Pentax 645 for decades and the currently available 16 has not been a factor causing me from changing to, for example, Hasselblad with their 25 lenses. Fujifilm, which has been getting a lot of buzz, only has six. Now that would be a concern for me, but in truth, I only own six Pentax 645 lenses and only use two on a regular basis.

Fred, it seems to me that you really need to find the self confidence to make the decisions for yourself. You’ll need to list the types of photography and scenarios that you expect to be shooting going forwards. Then consider the types of lenses you’d need (focal lengths, widest apertures etc) considering the big advances in high ISO performance available on recent cameras.

I believe that unless you are heading into some fairly specialised or professional situation (eg pro sports/paparazzi) (you’re a K30 user, so this seems fairly unlikely) then Pentax will undoubtably offer an excellent and good value solution that will out pace the competition in various ways.

It is important try and get a hands on test of a recent Pentax DSLR ....as said earlier, the ergonomics and interface are generally regarded as a great plus, and this is a very important part of the enjoyment of photography.

A point was made earlier regarding control of multiple off-camera flashes, and Nikon’s superiority in that respect ..... I would just add that this is true of the camera brand proprietary systems (ie those actually provided by Nikon and Pentax and integrated within their camera /flash feature sets) .....however, the camera brand proprietary systems often are not the best choice for multiple flash /complex lighting situations. Third party radio controlled systems will often be a better value choice and some will offer enhanced functioning and /or greater ease of use.

So we are fortunate here that there have been significant advances recently in support for Pentax DSLRs from makers of quality Radio trigger systems , including features such as Radio P-TTL & Radio HSS.

Hi Fred, and welcome :)

You've had some great (and robust :p) responses thus far.

I'm going to respond a little differently, by describing my own position and how I look at things. That might provide some useful contrast to yours.

I've been a member here since 2010 when I bought my first Pentax DSLR, but I've only been very active with my photography and forum posting in the last six years or so.

I shoot more than one system - Pentax, Sony A-mount, and Sony E-mount (but only with adapted lenses). I'm not a so-called "fanboy" (I don't like the term as it sounds rather derogatory). I see good and bad in every brand and every piece of equipment they produce. No-one and nothing is perfect. I have no loyalty to any brand other than to continue buying and using its equipment if it suits my needs as an enthusiastic hobbyist. I don't care if equipment from other brands is better or worse than mine in certain ways, or in every way - and pride doesn't enter into it for me. On that basis, whilst the opinions, appraisals and conclusions of bloggers and reviewers can occasionally be mildly entertaining (for a variety of reasons!), they matter nought to me. I form my own opinions, draw my own conclusions, and act on those alone. I don't look for reassurance or approval, and I don't care if anyone should think I've made good or bad choices in my gear (proof can be found in my signature... you'll see that I own a Hasselblad HV and don't even hide the fact!!).

I've never bought into a system or format on the basis of what it might offer in future - only what is on offer right now, and the availability of compatible products in the secondary market. I wouldn't buy into, or stay with, a system that couldn't offer me some means of achieving what I want, but I'm happy to learn new skills and use ingenuity to work around weaknesses in my gear. Often, that's part of the fun :) It also means that I rarely have any reason to complain where equipment is concerned.

I have no expectations for further development and new versions of the products I've bought, though I'm certainly interested in any new developments, and it's nice to see product lines evolve. Having the latest whizz-bang features and class-leading specifications is generally of little importance to me, though, and I'm happy so long as my basic requirements are largely met. To that end, I buy what I like and can afford. I have no problem choosing discontinued and rather outdated equipment if it fits the bill. My only expectation is that product quality should be commensurate with the prices I pay. I'm an easy customer to satisfy, and any new developments are icing on the cake for me. I'm rarely, if ever, truly disappointed.

I don't need or expect a line of communication or input into a brand's product development. If a company actively seeks my input, I'll willingly give it. Beyond that, I'm happy to sit back and wait with interest to see what new products it offers. If they suit my needs, I may buy them. If they don't, I won't.

I'm a fairly contented Pentax user, and I've no desire to switch. I like the cameras, and I like the lenses... but the main reason I'm settled with the brand is this place. Despite the negativity you've read about (and it can be wearing at times), we have a fantastic community here. Many members are incredibly willing and generous in the advice and help they'll provide when asked nicely, with courtesy and respect. For a hobbyist like me with so much still to learn, that's invaluable. It's a far better support network than any manufacturer could hope to offer, and much more important to me than camera specifications and features, gaps in lens line-ups, differences with other brand offerings, etc.

I'd like Ricoh / Pentax to continue making great cameras and lenses that offer something different to the mainstream, and I'm sure it will. I doubt it will ever lead the market in specifications, features and performance, nor will it have the proliferation and market dominance of Nikon or Canon. I don't think it even wants to, and I certainly don't care one way or another. As a niche manufacturer of high quality, interesting and capable products, though, I think it'll continue to do well. But if it closed shop tomorrow, I have fully working equipment right now that should last for years if I take good care of it - and there's plenty more available in the secondary market should I need to replace anything. Given that, I don't lose any sleep over the brand's future :)

I will be straight to the point. The k-1 is amazing.

Your post speaks of a long commitment to the k1000 suggestive of a contentment with simplicity. The k-1 is that in the digital era. It delivers with ease. It really does. I am two years into my copy and have felt no need To upgrade.

Much of the negative talk is either unfounded or confounded. All systems have their pros and cons. The k-1 is no exception. For me I care little for filming - this being the biggest failing.

I challenge you to look for the positives in the system and then ask yourself if it is what you want, not the deficient path.
