Thanks! I actually have that lens but have not used it much, was looking for ideas of what to do with it. But don't you actually prefer stop down metering than putting it on A with older lens, because then you actually keep taking shots instead of adjusting exposure? I don't know, I went broke but got that 43mm and 100mm WR macro, will probably just use my 28mm as far as those old ones goes unless just bored. Which by the way Amazon has that Macro lens for like 340, and it is awesome.I remember shopping around, and those faster 120mm and 135mm were not cheap, Amazon has some suprising prices on the discontinued ones, especially that 100mm macro, I really like it, more than the 43mm so far. Anyways, thanks for tips!!

Cool! Yeah it works normally now, thanks. I think I was confused or something. What do you use that lens for?

Could someone please help me with simple advice to get better quality stills from video. I like that for self portraits because performance anxiety usually has me looking very goofy, but the stills I capture look horrendous, like I took a photo of a photo with an instant camera. Is there a way to get a little less noise?

I have a k-50. It just says unavailable.... I need to try turning the camera on and off, I think sometimes it gets confused, because it should still have custom image settings from what I understand, and thanks for backing that up based on your understanding as well. Not that matters much at this point, I just got a new 43mm lens, so doubt I will fool much with those anymore. I am glad I did because I understand a lot more, but never could get good focus, having some trouble learning how to use autofocus since I was only using manual focus lenses, but already it is much easier over all. Thanks for help!

I have had my k-50 for exactly 4 months as well, but I got excited and ordered some primes while it was still in the mail. Found some great deals on some old ones, but I take lots of out-of-focus pictures
I usually have a A-28mm f3.5 on the camera default. Portraits, I use M-50mm f1.4. Both I got for around $40, so I am pleased. It can be a pain in the ass to remember all the things to do to use them properly, so you might just go for like a 28mm or 35mm with autofocus, as I have a 135mm prime, but rarely use it, and the 50 is little long for walking around use as well, 28 would be my "walk around". My attempt to solve this issue, to have one lens that I can use for a variety of things, is 43mm L which comes in mail tommorrow. I would like to get a 70mm or 100mm with macro function, then between the two, I would have most bases covered. I have a 50mm f1.7, that is manual. I would let you have it if you like. Send me your address and I will mail it to you if you share pictures!!
I need to lay of the primes really, I have a zoom lens with 18-210 that is light and compact and AF, but the quality of the photo with the prime when done correctly does not compare, it is the correctly part that is hard. When using the older lens as a beginner it is just too easy to forget something needed to get the right shot, and even if you figure out the exposure, the manual focus is tough. Maybe my eyes just suck, I cannot tell a difference in focus between a large amount turning the knob, but later on computer screen it is quite apparent. So for that reason I suggest to spend extra money for more modern prime lens. I will give you a 50mm m-series to play with. I don't mind to take a bunch of useless photos, but when people ask you to take there picture, I wish I had automatic lens on, lol.

Is it normal for these not to be available using m series lens. I was trying to use monochrome. What is the deal?

Not a great picture but a interesting creature! Megalopyge opercularis, in its larval stage, it's known as the puss or asp caterpillar. Do not touch it, but that should go without saying!! I like your caterpillars, those look nice!!

I was able to get a better than nothing result using the flash. It is super hard, but overall I had fun on my first outing photo outing. I think the flash was able to get the right light on the silo, if I would have had a wider angle lens and less things dangling I think I was beginning to get it. I still have a repeated problem with over exposing the sky. I tried to use fill-in flash and metering for the sky only several times with this same shot, but then everything would just be over exposed, since I am already at the maximum shutter speed allowed with the flash, aperture and iso is what to keep working on? I tried lower iso, and will experiment more with smaller aperture! Thanks again everybody! I added what I thought where the best pictures to a gallery. Also, photography is better exercise than I expected!!!

You are correct it was defaulted on center weighted when I checked it. I was playing with the flash, it seems the pop up flash will be difficult to balance in these situations. If it is an important picture I will just remember to save the raw file. The flash seems to be strong even at the lowest setting to balance a light shadow, but I will try at the next opportunity. Then I found this whole chart with math about the flash distances. I never had so much fun!! ---------- Post added 09-25-15 at 06:39 AM ----------
Thank you, I do have fun. I like all the pictures for one reason or another, sometimes just for the lesson. Thank you! Contrast would help I need to get that lightzone freeware I think, my software is crude with big blanket adjustments. So by the time I figure out the camera, the software, and what to take pictures of I should have no time left to get in any trouble.

Yes it does, it seems easy to use and should be very handy in these situations. I will have to try to next time.

Awesome!! Thank you. I had assumed it was metering in the focus spot. I have not used the flash yet. Those are great ideas. Thank you for those tips. I know it seems simple to more experienced people, but it is a lot to think about at once. Spot metering sounds easier than repeatedly trying higher compensations as the manual lenses are fun but easy to forget something. I am going to reasearch the fill-in flash and see what it is all about. Have a good one!!

Welcome! I just got that camera and I enjoy it so far. It has some great advantages for the price it seems, and it has been easy to learn with the help of the manual and this forum. That is a great deal! I paid slightly less but just got one kit lens. I love how you can use the older more affordable lenses. I did not even know that when I chose it. I just wanted weather resistance. I got an old manual pentax lens for $30 and it rocks the socks of the kit lenses, at least for low light and indoors. I hope you enjoy the camera as much as I have so far! I researched this forum a lot as it was shipping and got half decent pictures right away. Dear fellow distinguished members:
I only finally got around to buying k-50 a few days ago after considering photography as a hobby my entire life. So far it has been fun besides cloudy everyday since I got the camera. I would like to thank the developers of the site, and the members of the forum for the wealth of information that is of great assistance in figuring out how to operate the camera and produce quality pictures (in-time). All the tremendously motivational pictures that I see people posting are very exciting and give me something to strive for.
So yeah, that is great! The most difficulty I am having, seeing as I have been working nights and waking up late to cloudy afternoons, is objects appearing too dark against the sky or photographing things in the shade with bright light behind it. For example this lady was way too dark, and ending up looking like a green screen or something because of how much processing I did later. It is a totally weird pic, I never got a in focus balanced composition of that insanely green fountain, but two small water drops aligned with her nipples, so the perfect timing was enough to make me happy. Same thing with my friend, the bright background looks funny... Any advice on how to improve pictures in the shade, not in direct light, or pictures with varying amount of light in the frame would be of interest.
Please forgive any errors in the format of my thread/post or whatever you call it. I have also never used a forum before. I used a M series 50mm f1.7 which I like very much more than the kit lens. If you don't like my question, don't answer it. I am perfectly within my rights to sound like an inexperienced naive moron and I particularly enjoy it!!
Assuming my plan of using catch in focus with continuous shooting gives me more shots in better focus than my eye seems to be able to do, what's up with all these shadows?, just link a good article or relevant thread if you are weary of repetitious questioning, I had troubling find a good one. Thks!!

I have no idea, but my camera has catch in focus which I just learned to use. I plan on using in this in conjunction with some continuous shooting as the catch in focus is not perfect. That is my plan anyway. I just got a camera a few days ago and it has been cloudy and rainy ever since :( On my camera I just followed these instructions Shooting manual lenses on Pentax DSLRs « robertsdonovan.com |
