Thanks all; I really appreciate your replies and opinions. It's also good to see so much love here for this family of cameras.
In the end I decided to try out an ME Super as I found a body in great condition from a reputable seller at a mere GBP30. In the meantime I'll look into getting my Program A fixed (although suspect the cost may be steep) and keep my eye out for a Super A or Super Program as I really enjoyed using the Program A.

Hi All. I'm a big fan of Pentax K mount SLR's and have been using a couple of Program A and a P30T happily for the past 5 years. However, the final working Program A looks like it's given up the ghost & while I may yet look into getting it fixed, I wondered if anyone had a suggestion for an alternative model?
Of the P30T and the Program A I much prefer the latter as it gives me more manual override options than the P30T without being completely manual. I use it mostly on Auto, but it's nice to flip into manual if required. I also like the size of the Program A and wouldn't want to use anything larger. I own and use Large Format and MF cameras so would like to keep my 35mm SLRs reasonably compact.
So, recommend away. Should I go with another Program A or are there other models I should try out? These beauties go so cheaply on evilBay these days that I'm happy to try anything.
Thanks in advance |

Hi All, I'm sure this has been done to death here and elsewhere, but in my defence I've looked & looked & not found what I'm after, so I thought I'd ask the question here. A million apologies if it's been covered already (in which case a link to the topic would be greatly appreciated).
Anyway, here's the deal: I'm a very competent, but 100% analogue photographer and own a couple of Pentax SLRs with a variety of old standard K-mount primes. The world of DSLRs is completely beyond my experience. A friend of mine owns a K100D & is interested in trying out some of my lenses. We understand there are certain restrictions around using them with the K100D & are happy with that. What we can't seem to do is actually take a photo with her camera once we have attached a K-mount lens.
I see a lot of stuff online about how you have to set the camera to 'M' mode - which we've done - but that seems to be it. When we try that the camera simply doesn't fire. We've tried a couple of different lenses & had the same result.
I'm guessing there's some setting or other that needs to be set via the LCD screen on the back of the camera that we're missing. I read somewhere about having to manually set the aperture or something...is this the missing piece? It would be great if someone here could knock up a step-by-step on how to get old K-mounts working with a K100D.
OK, thanks in advance. All comments much appreciated.

I have a P30T and use it as my 'second' camera since I bought a Program-A a few years ago. Prior to that though I used the P30T as my primary 35mm SLR and it's a really fun, easy camera to use.
Lens-wise you really can't go wrong with the 50mm SMC f1.4. The standard f1.7 can be picked up almost everywhere on evilBay for cheap, but the f1.4 weighs in a little more money. Worth it though; lovely lens.
I also use what is essentially a defective Tamron 28mm f2.8 which is nice and sharp in the middle and very blurry around the edges. For me this is a plus rather than a minus as it's a very good blur :D, but if that sort of thing appeals to you I doubt you could guarantee that all Tamron 28mms would have the same 'feature'.
What I'm sorely lacking is a decent K-mount portrait lens.

Hi all. I'm a (just) 40-something living in the UK. I stumbled into using Pentax 35mm SLRs a few years ago and see absolutely no reason to change. I have a couple of 35mm bodies and lenses and like 'em all. I use a host of other 35mm and MF cameras as well as some larger format beasts and a few different Polaroids too. I'm the opposite of a gear freak though and try to steer clear of the overly technical aspects of photographic equipment. For me it's all about the image.....and using film.
I was an early adopter of digital back in the mid 90's, but returned to film 8 years ago and that's where I'm going to stay. It excites me more. I co-run a film-only site dedicated to creative/arty farty photography called filmwasters.com and can be found mostly on the forum we run there. I thought I'd sign up here to catch up on all things K-mount-related which I've been missing over the years and to experience a properly run photo forum (as opposed to the anarchy of my own :D). I'm particularly interested in picking up some info on lenses as I feel I could do with adding a couple more to my collection.
Looking forward to diving right in.
Program A with generic 28mm lens and Fuji 1600. Taken last weekend.
