Agreed. The Auto 110 Legacy lenses are mostly truly small. Perhaps Ricoh can make some new auto-focus lenses similarly small even if they sacrifice features such as speed (or as in the Auto 110, adjustable aperture altogether, engineering the lenses to shoot wide open).

For those of us who have a complete collection of Auto 110 lenses (which are excellent and mostly tiny) the m4/3 compacts are not a substitute for a new Q with an EVF, the holy grail for us. The Q lenses are also less voluminous than the m4/3 counterparts (unsurprisingly given the smaller image circle) and so carrying a miniature SLR kit in a side pack is easier with the Q. So hear's hoping (though doubting) that Ricoh has one more Q body in its plans and that there will be an EVF (even if external and optional).

Not only that, but with optical viewfinder (Pentax or aftermarket), it's a pleasure to use.

Thanks. This might make sense for a larger sensor, but the grain on the Q's tiny sensor at high ISO is disqualifying. As I mentioned, perhaps I can see it for a shot of a person's face, because harsh lighting could be worse than the grain, but there is an easy solution, then, set the algorithm for soft lighting whenever a face is detected but otherwise pump up the flash. ---------- Post added 11-21-15 at 10:41 AM ----------

In a dimly lit room, even with the lens wide open or nearly so, the Q-S1 sets a high ISO, about 1000, and a low shutter speed of 1/20 for a flash image. Manually setting both ISO at 200 and shutter speed at 1/125 produces a much better image, presumably because the TTL control of the camera is increasing the intensity of the flash. Why is this not done by default? Perhaps the highly-powered flash is too hard on skin (I was testing on objects), but then it would seem that the algorithm would go to the high ISO (and, less significantly, slow shutter speed) only when a face is detected. Strange.

Back when this thread was still current, PB recommended this to me as instructions on how to adapt Auto 110 Lenses:
This, I did, but the washers are much larger than the adapter. I could try cutting them down, but fear this will not be precise enough. Am I missing something?

The advantage of a Q system over m4/3 (which I own, by the way) is lens size; that's why I want the EVF.

Having just purchased a Q-S1, I enjoy it immensely. Decent image quality in a small package with a camera that operates like a camera, rather than a cell phone. But unless I'm using the 01 prime and OVF, the camera stops being a joy to use because composing on the screen, even with a Clearviewer, is awkward. A number of other threads have included posts that express hope the next Q (presumably the Q-S2), if there is one, will have an EVF, at least as an external option. That would be great--essentially a digital version of the old Pentax Auto 110--and I'd buy all Q lenses (including the expensive wide-angle zoom) if that happened. Thought it might be interesting to open a separate thread and see whether others feel as strongly as I do that the Q camera system sorely needs an EVF (or whether I am just a dinosaur).

That Pentax (Ricoh) no longer sells the S01 prime, though it is the only lens that its OVF works with, is a bad sign for the future, I think. I live in Manhattan and was able to locate a grand total of one S01 to purchase new, from Adorama (B&H had none). The only other option for a new S01 would be to find an old unsold kit that used that lens then to sell off the body separately (if you wanted a newer model of the Q). If Pentax no longer wants to sell its most useful prime, it seems that it isn't seriously devoted to the system (notwithstanding the new wide-angle zoom). But I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to upgrade from a Q-S1 to a Q with an EVF option.

When I bought a Q-S1 I took it out along with an original Q to compare using the S01 prime (which is pretty much all I use other than the occasional legacy lens). The difference in IQ was noticeable, even without pixel peeping. But the IQ was not as good as on 4/3 sensor with a decent lens (so not as good as on FF sensor either, I'm sure). Close, though.

Well maybe, but the lenses are significantly smaller than those for the 4/3 sensor for the same (equiv.) focal length. To my mind, what is holding back the Q is the lack of even an optional-external EVF. I use my Q-S1 as a primary walk around camera now with the S01 prime and optical viewfinder, because I don't like composing on a screen (even with a Clearviewer, which helps some). Usually, if I want to change lenses, I switch cameras. If the next iteration of the Q, assuming there is one, had an EVF, I'd buy not only that camera and both the wide and long zooms, that's $1,000 in revenues for Pentax. (I'd sell my m4/3 gear.) If there are even some others like me, seems like a good move for Pentax. But we'll see. ---------- Post added 10-10-15 at 11:17 AM ----------
Maybe, but that was not the target market of the original Q, which sold for about $800 if I recall. The EVF is key, in my view. To carry around a small kit with lots of focal length options, I'd sacrifice a bit of image quality. (I shoot 4x5 film when IQ is paramount.) But only if I had an EVF. The Q's optical EVF (which I use with S01 prime) is big enough that an external EVF could be about the same size, leaving the entire camera system, including the tiny lenses, significantly smaller than a m4/3 system and even significantly smaller than the Nikon 1 system.

By the way, is it just a coincidence that the lens baby discs fit in the Q converter?

Well, I just bought a Q-S1 and whenever I buy a new camera it's obsolete the next week, so I'm betting on a new version soon. It will be worth it, though, if they include an EVF option--think how great it would be to use legacy lenses through an EVF. Hope springs eternal.

A number of threads mention using a washer as an aperture iris for Pentax Auto 110 lenses (which are fixed at f/2.8 on the Auto 110 camera). Could someone provide more detail about how to do this, or where to buy disks (which, I presume, go in the 110 to Q adapter). Also, while I'm on the topic, I do notice (as have others) that the wide Auto 110 lenses do not focus well at infinity unless stopped down with the washers (or other devices). This is surprising in that there should be focus at infinity if the adapter is well constructed even if there isn't much depth of field. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Even the Pentax OVF-1 is a bit too narrow for the 1/1.7" sensor in the Q-S1 (andQ7). But like the OP, I like turning off the screen and shooting only through the optical finder with S01 prime. Just have to get used to the framing. Still hoping that the next Q, if there is one, has an EVF option.
