Hi everyone,
I have a sigma 50mm macro lens. I can focus within a few centimeters (around an inch-ish) from the front of the lens to the subject.
When I was looking up other macro lenses I saw that the pentax 100mm macro has a minimum focusing distance of 30cm (12inches). I don't understand how it can be a macro lens if that's the closest focusing distance.
I tried taking photos (albeit out of focus) with my 18-135 and my 55-100 @ 100mm from around 30cm away and it didn't look close to 1:1
I feel like I'm missing something obvious! Help please :-)

Hey LeDave,
I would go with square or portrait and a tighter crop.
I'd recompose to not have the branches/shrubs in the foreground covering part of their legs/feet. And with the rock on the left, it feels like it neither in nor out (if that makes sense!)
As the others said their pose is really awkward looking.
I find the light too hard. Maybe try in softer light.
Hope this helps :-)

Yes I took it in Raw and I'm sure I can bring out the blue in the sky a bit more.
As for cropping, personally I prefer not to cut off the arch and I don't want the church in the background to be too close to the edge of the frame, but I'll play around with it and see if I can improve it.
Thanks,
Chris

Thank you both for the feedback.
I agree earlier in the evening would have been better. I'm not sure I can recompose it to cut out the bit on the bottom left from that spot, but I'll give it a go next time I'm out shooting :-)
Cheers,
Chris

Hi gmans,
Thanks for the reply. I shot this in aperture priority mode (I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "f11 Automatic"). Why would f5.6 or f8 would be better than f11?
Cheers,
Chris

Very nice shot! :-)
Did you crop the sides? I wonder how it would look with a bit more of the dogs' heads/ears in the shot.

Hi everyone,
After a month or 2, I finally got round to taking some photos again last week. This is a photo of the oldest bridge in Basel, Switzerland, and the surrounding city. I think it's one of my favourites that I've taken so far. But I'm sure there is room for improvement :-)
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Tranzistors and thanks for your feedback.
I thought someone might mention the flare, I don't have a lens hood and I was quite limted in where I could take the photo from. There were some unsightly trailers just out of frame to the left. To be clear, are you talking about the big obvious flare in the top left of the image, just above the building, or all the stuff in the bottom right, or both?
I have a similar image taken at f8, 6 seconds and 100 ISO, and I really couldn't see much difference in sharpness, slightly less noise, but barely noticable IMO (even zoomed right in). I've heard of certain apertures being sharper, but is the jury still out or is there compelling evidence (or even personal experience) that suggests one aperture is sharper than another?
I'm not sure what you mean by JPEG artefacts, but I took the photo in raw, then converted it.
As for the composition, I wanted to get all of the building in the shot. Next time I'll try on from closer, with just the interior.
Thanks very much for your input :-)
I might try another edit of the raw file from scratch, this one was done late at night when I was tired and probably in a rush to get to bed!

Hi everyone,
I brought the tripod out for the first time in a while last night and this is of my favourite photos of the night. It's the market hall in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
I'd love to hear your opinions :-)
p.s I realise it's about time I cleaned the sensor(and/or lens)!

Thanks again for all the replies,
Kazinjo, I like your photo, although I find the background colours a bit off somehow. I feel as if my eyes are drawn to the greens and blues, but they don't really add to the photo. I'm no expert and this is just my humble opinion. I would suggest you post it in a new thread to get more reactions, as anyone who has already seen my post probably won't be checking in here again.
Cheers,
Chris

This version is a bit higher in contrast and more saturated than the original image, I couldn't make up my mind if I went too far with it. I also have a black and white version which is nice, but I think this is my favourite version.
