These aren't nearly as impressive as the other pictures I see on here, but I'm pretty new to photography. The K-50 is my first DSLR. I got it a few months ago and never really learned how to use it properly. I just started an online class yesterday to learn more about branching out of auto mode. I practiced on my favorite subjects today in the nice weather. :) My GSD was mid-bark during her picture, and my Lab is so hard to photograph because she's so dark. I'm VERY happy with how these turned out! :)

ks2 vs k50 - Dad has fat fingers - m42 lenses

I can't compare the K-50 and the K-S2, but I just got the K-50 a few days ago. I'm a camera novice and have been pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to use. I got the K-50 with two kit lenses for $404 on Amazon and I think that was a great deal. I saw the K-S2 deal at Costco shortly after purchasing, but decided I would rather save the extra money it would cost and save up for another lens like the 50mm prime. I think the K-50 is a great first DSLR. At least it has been so far for me. :) And it is a pretty good size. I have small hands, but I think my dad (who also has fat fingers) would have no problem holding it and working it.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to explain all that. I'm brand new so I appreciate any advice/feedback. I think I was confused on aperture. I thought the smaller the number, the larger the area of focus was (So with a smaller number it would focus on more of her face). Now that I know that I need to bring the aperture down some, I'll play around some more and see if I can get more of her head in focus. I love the focus on her eyes, but I want some shots to focus on her whole face. So basically turn down the aperture, speed up the shutter, and step back a little? I'm going to give that a try!

This picture was in TAv mode, so the camera was controlling the ISO. In almost every other picture I've taken in this room with this lighting, the ISO was 3200, so I'm not sure why it changed with this one. I may switch to manual so that I can control the ISO too.

I really appreciate your feedback. And as far as the moving subject, she's very still when she wants to be. I actually got a few pictures with the shutter speed at 1/5 without any blur when I was playing around. I'm lucky to have a willing, cooperative subject. :)

Thanks! She's an easy model because the sound of the lens focusing fascinates her and makes her stare. :) I'm still figuring out the DOF. I have the aperture wide open, but still can't get it to focus on her entire face (nose, ears, and eyes). So for now I'm just focusing on her eyes until I can figure out how to get a wider DOF.

This was one I took in TAv node. I like having control over both aperture and shutter speed!

Thanks! I've never enjoyed taking pictures of her before because like you said, it's so hard to catch any sort of depth/contour. I've probably taken about 100 pictures of her since I got my K-50 on Thursday. I'm really enjoying actually being able to see her face! Here's one I took last night.

Just got my K-50 yesterday, which is not only my first DSLR, but also my first real camera! Before I got it, I only used my phone camera. Here's a shot I took this evening of my black Lab Didi. She was ready for bed, but was very content on my side of the bed.

Thanks for the explanation! I'm new to pretty much everything photography related, so although I knew about the exposure triangle, I haven't ever used it before or completely understood it. I was a little intimidated by Shutter Priority yesterday because it seemed to make my pictures much darker, but I just started playing with TAv mode again and I am MUCH happier with the pictures. I was thinking using TAv mode would be more difficult than doing Av or Tv, but it actually seems to be easier because I'm more in control. I'll post some more pictures soon after I play with it a little more!

Thanks! I've been experimenting with Aperture Priority today. I tried the TAv mode last night, but I think I need to better understand Aperture priority and Shutter speed priority before I tackle both at the same time.

Here are a couple shots from today when I was experimenting with Aperture Priority and working on focusing on different parts of the image. My very willing model is my black lab Didi. :) I wish the first one was a little less dark on her face, but I like how she's more in focus than my other dog in the background. The second two pictures are essentially the same, but that's where I was practicing focusing on specific parts of her (nose versus eyes).

Thanks guys! I'm still learning about all the settings like White balance, aperture priority, etc. But it's a lot of fun to play around with the camera and see what happens!

Thank you! I'm very pleased with the K-50 so far. I LOVE your shots! Animals are definitely my favorite thing to take pictures of.

Thanks! I've never had a camera that took good pictures of her because they always make her face too dark or the rest of the picture too bright. That was taken on Auto so I was impressed. :)

I'm definitely enjoying it! The battery is recharging now so I'm reading up on all the different modes and how to use them properly. There are so many modes and features that I don't know where to start! Even though a lot of my pictures are awful right now, I'm having a lot of fun. :)

Just got my K-50 today! I'm brand new to DSLR's so don't judge the pictures too much. :) These were about 5 minutes after opening the box! Very happy with the quality, especially since I have no experience and this was the kit lens.

It's here!!! I started experimenting with my K-50 once I figured out how to operate it. It's so much fun! I'm loving the feel of it and the picture quality. Here are a few shots I got today. I know they aren't good at all compared to most of the pictures I see on here, but I'm SO happy with how they're turning out considering my lack of experience. :)

Thanks! This is my first DSLR too. I guess I just have a tendency to worry if I made the right decision. My K-50 should be getting here this afternoon and I can't wait to try it out. I don't think I want to invest the extra money in the K-S2 right now. Also the easier to hold is great because I'm pretty clumsy haha.

Thanks for easing my worries guys! I have a tendency to worry about making the wrong decision. I really think I made the right one with the K-50 thought. I definitely like the speed and buffering and the wireless triggering. I can't wait to get my K-50 this afternoon and start experimenting with it. :)

I'm so torn guys... My K-50 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow and I just saw that Costco has the K-S2 with 18-55 mm and 50-200 mm lenses plus a camera case for $499. That's only $90 than what I paid. I can return the K-50 for only the cost of return shipping... Should I return it and get the K-S2? I have a Costco membership.

Dang! I just ordered a K-50 with the 18-55 and 50-200 lenses two days ago. Wondering if I would be better off getting this. My K-50 should be delivered tomorrow but Amazon does returns... What do you guys think?

Beautiful dog! I have a GSD as well. Thanks for sharing that thread! I will definitely be browsing it and sharing some pictures soon.

Thanks for this advice! I will be sure to get the 50mm f/1.8 prime at some point. For now I'll play around with the kit lenses and work on understanding all of the photography terms so that I can make myself better. Then I'll upgrade to better equipment. :)

Bit the bullet and ordered the K-50 with the two kit lenses! I can't wait for it to get here so I can start practicing with it. Luckily I have Amazon Prime so it will be here Thursday because I'm impatient. :) I'll be sure to update with some pictures once I get it!

Thank you for your advice! I plan on taking LOTS of pictures once I get the camera so that I can improve my skills and understanding of all the photography terms.

Thanks guys! I will be sure and get at least one spare battery. That will be nice so I don't have to worry about the camera dying while I'm away from the house. My plan is to get a 64 GB class 10 SD memory card. I've read that those are fast and don't slow the camera down as much.

I was thinking the same thing about the price of this bundle! It's almost too good to be true. I would love to participate in some of the photo challenges so that I can get a wide variety of practice with my camera and get some advice from people who are much more knowledgeable than I am.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'm still new to the forum thing so I'm not sure how to embed multiple quotes in one reply.

The kit lenses are DAL, but they are WR which is a necessity for me. I want to be able to take pictures in rain, snow, etc. without worrying.

Love the dog pictures that people posted! They're adorable. I have 4 dogs that I currently am using my iPhone to take pictures of, so I'm looking forward to being able to play around with the K-50 and learn how to work a DSLR.

I think I'm going to go with the base kit and add the 18-135 later if needed. That's one thing that has drawn me to Pentax, since the lenses are so interchangeable. Right now I would rather have two basic lenses that I can experiment with and see what I like, then splurge on a nice lens later once I figure out what I want. I really appreciate all the advice!

Do Pentax cameras often go on sale around Black Friday/Cyber Monday? The $408 for the K-50 and two WR lenses seems like a great deal to me, but knowing my luck they'll go on sale more right after I purchase it.

Also, are there any accessories that you guys consider necessities? Thanks for the warm welcome!
