There's too much nice gear in this thread !

Something I bought recently myself while waiting for my FiL to have his OP appointment. Been looking for nice one of these that was both affordable and not crusty with corrosion. Did not have to import from Japan either. Am I a snob for wanting an Asahiflex rather than Tower branded one too ?

I'd love one with that patina. I have a black SP which someone seems to have looked after over the years which is a shame :-)

Well I was helping a friend move house and so we were clearing the garage. There was a bag of stuff. I asked what it was "late husband's old camera gear". Did I want it ?

We're on the road to nowhere. Well not quite - between Salt Lake City and Jackson, Wyoming. Decided to drive from SLC rather than fly direct (from San Francisco). Worth it,

Pentax 645N / Ektachome 100. Slides are bad news to the wallet :-)

Pentax 6x7 - The Diopter of Despair

I had a look on there but my failure to pay attention while studying optics in my physics classes meant I couldn't understand what I needed when I looked on their site. And they never replied to my email ...

In the end I bought this one from B&H and it works fine and it fits too. No plans to attempt to remove lens from the metal collar this time.

I would still like to get the lens on it's own so I can replaced the current one in the screw in part of the V. I just need to work out what diopter it really is. It say +1 dioptre on the box but I think that is based on the presumption that the VF is by default -1 dioptre. As my RX is +2.5 that sounds about right. Certainly works OK

Step One - Order variable diopter eyepiece from eBay. Receive one intended for Leica cameras which doesn't fit.

Step Two - Order Nikon eye piece from eBay - wait weeks. Discover you've ordered the wrong diopter.

Step Three - Order another one, right diopter this time, wait weeks for it to arrive. Hurrah ! It's perfect. Discover despite being same product as previous one it has a shallower thread and keeps falling out.

Step Four - Have bright idea of taking lens out of latest one and replacing it in the standard eyepiece. Rejoice at sense of achievement in thinking of this great idea.

Step Five - Discover that you don't need to apply much pressure to crack new eyepiece lens.

Step Five - Descend into pit of despair.

Anyone found a source for just the replacement lens element ?

I think I've read all the earlier threads about the problems of finding a way to make diopter adjustments. I note that the VF has a - 1 diopter adjustment built in.

If that's the case how do you reconcile that with your prescription? Mine is +2.5 so what do I need to add to the screwi in eyepiece?

-1 plus 2.5 which would suggest 1.5 or - 1 minus 2.5 which could be oh I don't know, what...

Every time I see a full 110 set for sale my fingers twitch but I've resisted so far. I never really like 110 albeit with the cheap 110 cameras of the time and as I'm moving towards the larger formats it's an itch I need to resist :-)

It's like an itch I had to scratch. I had planned on getting a K1 but I'm really a sucker for medium format. So it had to be this baby. Took me a while to find a nice one. It was missing the shutter ring but the vendor told me that in advance so am about to print a new one. Will print a r/h grip too.

My latest and oldest film Pentax camera purchase. Has now had a CLA and fixed the sticky mirror. Not sure why but this feels rather better than my old and original K1000. It might be because the Spot is a black one and they're inherently better cameras :-)

Question for people to who use both classic lenses *and* more modern AF lenses

Yersss - focus peaking is something I've got rather used to on the Sony but to be honest a lot of the time I don't really use it. Turned up full it's a real distraction. I prefer to sue focus mag for some shots. That said I use a 645N and am quite happy with the "focus beep" confirmation.

I will take you up on that offer thanks nearer to when I make my final decision - much appreciated. And yes I have a "sweep bag" for my photo gear ! Fingers crossed.......

I'm not even going to try - I'd be really happy with either I'm not a pixel peeper. Shoot too much film to ever bother. I kinda believe that if I have good/better vintage glass then they can take care of themselves in the main. It's just that internet "truth" circulating that full frame sensors are capable of highlighting problems in older lenses which can't be fixed by the fixing on that going on between new bodies and new lenses.

Hello neighbor (Novato here). Did that weatherproofing come in useful with the rain this week

I suspect you might well be right. I'm currently working my way through the lens reviews but it's also a question where I will use the K1. At the moment I shoot the Sony when I want that fast AF and the guaranteed (mostly) digital quality that is needed for some applications. I use a Fuji X100T when I'm out with family and friends and want no faff. The K1 is probably going to end up being used for landscape, DSLR scanning and possibly some astro. TBH it's been a while since I shot with a "proper" DSLR so I need to re-establish where that FL sweetspot will end up being before I think about more modern lenses.

I may be on the verge of buying a K1. What am I saying ? I will be buying a K1 at some point to scratch that FF / Pentax SLR itch. And I am inevitably pondering lens choices. I currently shoot film and digital , classic and modern lenses. I have had a Sony A6000 for a few years but only have one modern lens (Sigma 30mm 1.4) and generally shoot classic lenses on it. Suits my style of photography in that I only occasionally need/enjoy the AF functionality. I have other cameras and lenses for other applications.

My question about the K1 is - does it reveal inherent weaknesses in classic lenses which a more modern (? matched) lens will not show ? It would seem an odd decision to buy a FF camera if it was compromised by the use of much older lenses. In truth I'm not expecting that to be the case in most situations but am curious to know what others think - both classic lens fans and full on current generation lens shooters. Are for example late film era AF lenses a good option ?

A follow up - if I was to buy something similar to the Sigma above i.e. a general purpose lens with full integration into the K1 - what should I be looking at. I'm thinking of something around the 35-40mm mark and preferably not mega expensive. I also have a rangefinder habit......

Thanks
