I've only taken images of the eclipse with this lens, so I'll put my one result here. If you'd like, I can take it out and take a couple of shots of something that allows pixel peeping. A brick wall perhaps, or some item that can show the quality of the lens over the lack of quality of the photographer.
Thanks for looking.

This isn't that relevant to the sale, and I hope you're not offended for my posting in your thread. Your product photography skills are enviable.

Thank you bjdavey, that is very kind. I'd love to be able to give you a good answer. I'll do my best, but I'm afraid this will come out as just confused rambling.
I'm an absolute neophyte at all of this and not knowing what I'm doing, a lot of it was random slider tweaking while trying to follow instructions on Jerry L's site. I didn't document the steps that produced this or any of the other half dozen versions while I was screwing around and so I'm not entirely sure, but I can give you the basics. I followed the crop, radial blur, subtract, multiply method Jerry describes here on his site which he credits to a gentleman named Pellett.
For each image in my sequence, I created a crop, blur, subtract and multiply copy. Where I think I deviated from the basic method with this version is to do a second multiply blend of each of the first 'multiply' copy of the images, but this second time, I applied a composite of all of the subtract images to each of the original multiply images to create a second stronger 'multiply' version of each image of the sequence. I saved each result as a new image file and then with those created the composite using HDR Pro in PS (cc version). The random slider tweaking I mentioned was on the composite of the subtract images as well as on the final blended image.
I think ultimately what I did in applying the multiply blend twice is pretty similar to an occasion while processing any general image and applying some kind of filter or adjustment, liking the result enough to think 'hey, pretty cool, I'll do it again' and then applying the same filter/adjustment a second time.
Dust spots not withstanding, I'm reasonably pleased with the original data I got and think there's a better image in there for someone who knows what they are doing (which I hope is future, more experienced me).
I hope that made some sense. If not, and you'd like a better description, PM me and I'll send you direct contact info so we can chat about it.
Thanks,
Jim

Jlev! I was nearly directly in line between you and Mt Borah. We had the same idea. I wanted to get a nice wide shot of the eclipsed sun over the peak. I haven't worked with the my wide angle yet images yet, but I know just from preliminary looks they didn't turn out as cool as yours. My composite is ok, but others are much more capable with processing (and you can tell that I didn't clean my sensor). Even so, I'm glad to have made the attempt and to have something that is mine.
...and Diamond Ring (I was a little late, so it's a huge diamond) with wicked lens flare. |

I really like this shot. The similarity may be only in my mind, but it reminded me of Weston's artichoke.

I have no experience with this lens so no comment on its capability but my son played ds in club ball about 15 years ago when the position was relatively new. So regarding something with which I do have experience, I offer compliments on giving as much attention to the libero as to the hitters.

Thank you redcat. I searched for this kind of info on jatrax's suggestion and found some but not that particular thread. This probably clinches it for me. I'm going to get the DA.
The best I can manage in French is just hello and thank you, but love the international nature of this forum so I should have said merci beaucoup.

Wow Kerrowdown. LOL. So my wife has some MacLeod's in her family tree and of all of her European ancestry, she's partial to her Scottish roots. She'll get a kick out of the fact that a highlander has commented on what deviant things I might be doing with my photography gear. I need to proof read better!
I'm finding mcgregni's first advice perfectly sound and good justification to find something useful at that length to help me develop.
Though new to this account, I've been lurking for a while. This is a great community of which I hope to be a good citizen. Thanks to all for the advice.

Thanks for the reply jatrax. I haven't heard or seen reports that the DA will be FF compatible and have been under the impression that it's APS-C only.
Maybe the prudent thing to do is just wait and see and also to try to improve in the meantime. My (limited) skill level should probably demand more attention that my bag contents. I am however, having some trouble trying to suppress the pull I'm feeling to buy gear. Maybe it's just a thing for those of us who are newbies, though I doubt I'll outgrow it.

Hello all,
New Pentaxian and somewhat old. I had a K1000 back in the day. I've only just dipped a toe in and bought a K-50. Love it so far but am looking for a longer lens than the one that came with the kit (18-135 which has been better than expected as an optional kit lens). I can't say everything I'll be looking to do with the longer lens, but at least one of those things will be photographing air shows. I'm looking at the DA* 300 f4 with likely the 1.4 tc.
The hedge part of this is because I've read such great things also about the FA* 300 f4.5. Costs would be not significantly different so as a consideration, cost is out. I'm wondering what you all think of buying the FA rather than the DA so that I'll have full coverage if/when going to ff in 4th Q 2015 , 1Q 2016, or who knows when.
I know there is no definite right or wrong answer and that I haven't given that much info. This is a generally asked question to see what things come up that I might not have thought of that would be worth considering.
Thanks everyone.
