Thanks Igor, I might have got a bit lucky - the camera was set to TAV and Spot-Metering, the ISO was automatically reduced to 100, but it may have been blinking indicating overexposure of the overall scene (I was only concentrating on the focus!). Highlights and Shadows were adjusted in Post Processing.
Cheers Ross

Thanks. The bird might look a bit lager than life in that photo with it's wings flapping.
Here's another shot.

On the extreme focal length ends (short or long) the prices are higher, so if you are not sure I would maybe experiment with a few cheaper 28mm or similar lenses to see if they work for you.
If not, then you may need to budget for something in the 10-20mm Fast Zoom range or a 14mm / 15mm / 16mm prime

I like the old Tamron F2.8's in 28mm, and you should be able to find a good used one within your budget, but is it wide enough?

I have bought almost all of my lenses in used condition from eBay & Gumtree.
Sellers that understand Cameras and Lenses tend to be ultra conservative in their descriptions typically saying there is dust in the lens, and cleaning marks (even if there isn't) and exaggerating insignificant issues.
Sellers that don't understand don't see things like Haze & Fungus and don't do too much checking, if the external appearance looks good.
I price lenses on the worst case scenario, and clean and repair them if required.
If you are looking at 3rd party lenses (Sigma, Tamron etc) there is some interesting data here: https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2013/08/lensrentals-repair-data-2012-2013 |

Sometime soon we are probably going to be using Video cameras that can take Stills (rather than the other way around) so I think a screen which could be difficult to use in a presentation (YouTube) style video and the lack of Video Image Stabilisation will be deal breaker for some.
I would buy the K-1 but I doubt that my kids would.

Couple of shots with an even older lens - 1966 Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8/50 (West German):
1st shot F2.8 / 1/4sec - nose is too long!
2nd shot F4.0 1/15sec

I acquired the lens with a smashed filter ring, and it was full of spider-web type fungus.
Removing 5 of the 7 elements was relatively straightforward.
However, one of the groups of multiple elements needed to be separated outside of the lens, which is difficult to hold with one hand, and unscrew with the other (hence the lightweight vice with soft jaws).
To access the last two elements requires some serious dismantling of the lens, and it didn't look too bad at that point, so I decided to skip and rebuild it.
One of the test shots of the rebuilt lens is attached.
Under further testing the lens exhibited a little bit of flare in strong backlit conditions, so I am going to dismantle again and clean the other 2 elements (when I get some spare time).

Works well if you have this type of mount...
