Lens recommendations for city and animals

Thanks to the lot of answers, the recommendations and the pictures.

I use RAW in combination with Lightroom and it gave me a great opportunity to improve my results by far.
When I wrote, the wow-effect is missing, a little bit of missing sharpness, contract and the colors a my concern. General I'm happy with my pictures, but there is always something to improve (especially, if I look at all your pictures).
I added some pictures from the last vacation, most of them are made with the Sigma 17-70mm C. The whale pictures is not sharp, but made with 300mm from a boat.

I have the opportunity to get a K5IIS with the DA* 16-50 on the weekend. I think, I will update my camera a little bit and then compare both the Sigma 17-70 and the 16-50 for a time to decide, which to keep.
I think, on the longer end I will either go with the very cheap 55-300 or try to get a used Tamron 70-200, whose results I really like.
The suggestion for a 12-24 was new for me, but when I look at my pictures, I often go to a wide angle in cities and landscapes. I will keep this in mind.

Thanks again so much for helping me improve my pictures.

Lens recommendations for city and animals

Hello,

I need your recommendations for an update for my lenses. My main focus of photography is city and animals (Zoo) pictures as well as family pictures and a little bit landscapes.
I have a K5, which I really like.
My lenses are:
- Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.0 Contemporary (I like the lens, but I somehow miss the wow-effect a little)
- Sigma 70-300 APO (I like the zoom factor with the 300mm, but also no wow-effect)
- Pentax DA35 f2.4 (I don't use it very often, because the fix focus. )

When I look at the photos you guys post at the forum, I'm very impressed about the sharpness and the colors.
I will have a photo tour in Manhattan in some month.

What lenses would you recommend as update in an affordable price range (I would also buy used lenses)? I could get a DA* 16-50 for a good price, but I'm not sure, if it's so much better than the Sigma 17-70 or if I keep it and invest in a very good lens with 300mm at the long end. I like the pictures of the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens, but I'm not really sure about the 200mm.
I also like the pictures of the DA 16-85, but the price is very high.

Thanks for your advices and best regards
Torsten

Hello together,

my name is Torsten and I would like to introduce myself.

I'm originally from Germany (Wolfsburg), but now I'm living for 3 years in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I work for Volkswagen here.
I'm married with two daughters.

My interests beside photography are motorcycles and travelling.

I have now my third Pentax camera. After a K100Ds and a K-x I own a K5, which I like very much.
I only have 2 lenses, a DA 18-250, which broke yesterday and a DA 35 f2.4.
Additional a have a FGZ-360 flash and a tripod from Manfrotto.

I will annoy you with some questions in the next time, the most about lenses.

DA 18-250 repair or something else?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and I will introduce myself in the "Welcomes and Introductions"-forum.

Until yesterday I had on my K5 a Pentax DA 18-250 as everyday lens. But now it doesn't focus anymore on longer ranges. Until 70mm everything works.
I asked a repair center for an estimate and it was 300 USD. I really like the lens, it's wide range and the results, but in my opinion a repair doesn't make sense.

So I think about going to buy a more quality combination and changing lenses again.
In the addition to the 18-250 I own a DA 35 f2.4, which I only rarely use. I like the sharpness, but a lens with a fixed focal lenght is nothing for me.

Now my questions:
Would a combination of a Sigma 17-70 together with a Sigma 70-300 APO be an improvement?
Do you recommend other combinations in a similar or lower price range?

What to do with the old 18-250 lens? In the trash or can I still get some money for it?

In addition: I usually shoot pictures of landscapes, my family, animals in the zoo and tourist photos in cities. I'm an amateur concerning photography.

Thanks for your advices. :)
