Hello all, thanks for reading! I have had a 645Z for about 5 years and had tethering issues. I sent it into Precision Camera and they supposedly fixed the USB port, but it was still flakey and now it doesn't work any longer. I gave up tethering with it for a number of years and now have a job coming up for a museum so want to get tethering back up. I can't really remember where I left off in my diagnosis, but remember being quite fed up. I was using the Capture Fix with IT2 and Capture One, and was very nice though another thing to go wrong.
Anyway, camera is not showing up as a connected device in a deep dig into the Mac OS using 'Apple' > About this Mac > system report and then opening the USB tab. Tried several MacBooks and also a PC laptop. The camera is on PTP and does act as if it is getting connected, screen turns off on the camera and such. I have a 5 year warranty that is about to expire and am about to send it off again, but thought I would see if anyone here has ideas. Am using 10.12 and latest update of camera firmware and IT2.
ALSO, for wireless transfers..as a last resort...
I saw someone on here saying that they used a wifi card and put it in a slot that was getting lower res jpegs they could use to check for lighting and composition - maybe focus check as well?
The is also the Camfi Pro, but that uses the USB port. I guess I could get that and if it doesn't work then that will confirm it's the port being flakey, correct?
I had a phone number for a product specialist, Joe Virgil, and spoke with him once, but seems he isn't there any longer. Does anyone know of another person that could help me trouble shoot this?
Capture One was really great to be able to play with the photos, especially if you changed the ICC Profile, but you could never access any automatic lens cast/distortion adjustments. I hear that using it with Lightroom in conjunction with NIK collection is excellent. Does anyone use that combo?

Hi Mark and Rus! I'm happy to know that I'm not losing my mind! Would be great if you would call them and ask for 'Paul' as I spoke with him in length about it and he was stumped as well and is going to 'elevate' the issue so another report of the same problem will be helpful. He said it will bounce around the corporate ether and also may go to the Image Transmitter peeps...But I told hi I didn't think it was an Image Transmitter problem since body not showing up as a connected device and all....He said someone would contact me Friday or Monday...

Hi, have done some great still life jobs shooting tethered with the Z using Image Transmitter, Capture Fix then into Capture One, but during the last job the camera stopped connecting. The problem creeped up slowly and was able to be overcome restarting Image Transmitter (IT) software. I went to Adorama where I purchased it and diagnosed cable and port, they are ok since files were are able to be downloaded from the camera when in the MSC mode - we tried PC and Mac, but I didn't have the IT software installed...
The camera does not show up as a connected device under the 'System Report' 'USB' listing like a device usually does.
Last week while I was diagnosing, I was able to connect the camera to IT onto another computer, so thought it was my OS on the main computer so was going to re-install El Capitan. So, getting back to diagnosing, it will now not connect to that computer either! At that time the camera showed up in the system report of the USB area, but does not today. Well, I was behind in updating camera firmware (a new one in December) and then there was an IT update last month. After updated both there is still and no connection on the main computer and, nothing showing up in system report on both computers. And even worse, in the other computer, when the camera was plugged in and set to MSC mode under 'USB Connection' it would open up an automatic downloading type of software like Mac's Photos or iPhoto. But now it has stopped doing that also now! I work as a professional digital tech, so am well versed in diagnosing problems and troubleshooting, but I am stuck. Anyone have any ideas or know who I can turn to at Pentax/Ricoh?
At the start of diagnosing I went to Adorama to diagnose cable and camera port and we were able to get it to connect to a PC when it was set to PTP, and also opened up Apple's Photos when set to MSC. But I don't think I ever actually did an image download then or in any of the cases, but a preview of the image showed up, so thought that was good enough.
Does anyone think that the USB cable may be working in some respects but not others so why it is giving me these problems? Or part of the port is just a little damaged?
Anyone have any ideas or know who I can turn to at Pentax/Ricoh?

Does have live view, works ok...You can fire the shutter from the software, but never did bulb exposure, not sure if that is an option in the drop down menu for shutter speed or not (camera has to be connected and my tether cable is not working right now, need to get a new one.)....not sure about timer, but think you would set that on the camera body....don't think you can set up any kind of time lapse, definitely not in the IT2 software from what I can see looking at the module right now...

I've been using Image Transmitter 2 and works fine....like it for overhead shots as you can fire from the software...

I'm not seeing problems in C1 when I zoom in and in the exported files....I did myself a custom file with the X-rite as a basis, tweaking things manually in Advanced Color Editor and making a profile in there....I shoot in NYC commercial world and am also a digital tech, so Capture One is widely used, so going to stick with it....

Ended up making a tether-booster per Alex Munoz's blog. Basically a USB hub with a power adapter and seems to work really well extending times. Now camera drains batteries like any canon would, so getting about 4-5 hours per battery doing not so fast still life shooting....

tether to the Pentax Image transmitter software, have it dump to a folder that Alex's program pulls files from to 'fix' then transfer them to a Capture folder or whatever and then they show up in C1...takes about four seconds from shutter release to full resolved preview in the C1 viewer...Just shot a job with it yesterday....

thanks, am shooting tethered to someone hand holding shooting people, so will not be ideal to have another cord attached to the tether cable, but have thought of that, would have to extend the DC part of the cable....buying three batteries would be cheaper and cleaner...

I'm not used to the rate at which the battery power is drained shooting tethered. Canon batteries last about half a day, but am only getting about two hours now..Phase cameras do well also, guess helps to have a separate battery for the body and the digital back.....I bought 2 replacement batteries on Amazon, Wasabi or something, but they don't last long at all.....Shooting just to card and not tethered is fine for power consumption. Does the computer supply power to help send images along or does that not happen with the Pentax? I'm shooting to a Macbook pro with usb 3. Have heard that some ports on the laptops provide more power than others but can't find any concrete facts on this...
Wondering if this product from Tether Tools would help lessen the battery drain? Tether Tools TetherBoost Core Controller TBUSB30 B&H Photo Video It seems to tout maintaining a stable connection, but I have not had any problems with loss of connection, just slower transfers when the battery starts dying...
I have a job as a digital tech and am supplying this camera for the job with my laptop. I've been shooting tethered with it for myself and it's been great except for this battery dying issue. Been using Alex Munoz's Capture Fix and got the Pentax Image Transmitter 2 software....

Been using Alex's Capture Fix, works well....Just upgraded to C1 9 and it works well, worked well with C1 8 also...I'm surprised that you can see lens and shutter info in the Capture One module..there is about a four second delay between shutter release and showing up in the viewer, wish it was half of that, it's very fast with Phase and canons....

Hi, one can use Capture One if you use the Capture Fix program...can process out and everything..I have posted a new thread asking what are good general settings besides setting ICC profile to a camera that uses the same Sony sensor....

Hi, using this with now with C1 as that's what I'm used to ...Choosing the ICC profile that uses the same Sony sensor, IQ250 seems to be a good starting place..I see a thread about new color profiles used for other programs, not for C1....
Wondering if any other users of this combo (Z with C1) out there that can comment about other good 'base point' adjustments that can be made in the software? For example, with Canon cameras I always pull back the Red Channel in levels from 0 to 3 and that'ss a nice fix I always set....

Cap1 set up works, had to buy Image Transmitter, then got Capture Fix..Images show up in Cap1 on 2014 MacbookPro in less than four seconds for compete file to be seen...However, C1 won't 'auto select' new file into the viewer window though, trying to figure that out...

OK, you have to run it as a Catalog, not as a Capture Session, then use Hot Folder and works..you can even speed things up by having it auto select 'immediately' whereas the other way it would only show up when the file was fully rendered....

Hi, been wanting to buy a MF digital back for a while, have been borrowing a Hassey 503 with Phase One P25 back for a while, happy for the price drop, exciting to have the extra sensitivity of a CMOS MF back. Bummer that you have to buy Image Transmitter Software, about to rig it up and try to use it with Capture One, hope it's not too aggravating...Going to document some artwork in a gallery tomorrow, would like to use this camera, maybe will just shoot into Pentax module and figure it out later. I also do a lot of 'alternative process' work, using digital files as the root. Especially experienced with liquid silver gelatin emulsion and a modern 'tin type' version using this material. I'm using two ends of the spectrum, super modern and dawn of traditional photography. Hard core historical photo people discount doing it this way instead of 'in camera,' but I'm not a historical re-enactor, I'm here to make bad-ass images and photography has always been about technical improvements, right?
