Pentax KP - Specifications

Signed and sealed. With a flippy screen of course.

Some upgrades and some downgrades are not what I need to replace my K-3. I will hold out for a K-3 III, which I firmly believe is coming. Of course it will not be called that. DPR is firmly standing by their claim that Ricoh Americas presented the KP to them as the K-3 II replacement.

Clearly the improved K3 AF algorithms could be retrofitted to the K-3 and K-3 II bodies. Hopefully Ricoh will oblige.

It's a DSLR aimed at mirrorless shooters. Maybe Pentax thinks it can lure some people back.

Here a promo by Ricoh. The guy must be inspector gadget for he has an allen wrench up his sleeve somewhere:

I thought one of Pentax's strength was value? 80D is already poor value. D7200 is $CDN1100-1200 right now, XT-20 is on pre-order for $CDN1200, and K-3ii still available for $CDN1000-1050...

Some new pics on that too, or at least pics I hadn't seen (with 16-85 and the black and silver side-by-side on a reflective table). Thanks!

Looks like $CDN1500 on amazon.ca. Very expensive, IMHO.

I think people are really dragging conclusions here about the shutter and buffer size.

Yes. Do you want to know why? Because a) Pentax is capable of major AF upgrades (not D500 level, but still relative to its older cameras). From the K5 II to the K3 the AF was upgraded from 11 to 27 points. I don't know about speed and performance, but just from the number of AF points that is an upgrade of 145%. Pretty close to the 150% you quoted

In addition, with the K-1 Pentax went low price (relative to the competition). They even went so far as to include USB 2 instead of USB 3 to keep the price down, as they said in an interview. Thus is makes perfect sense for them to not throw all their money at a new super-duper AF system. In fact, I think someone noted the additional 6 points of the K-1's AF were already hardwired into the 27-point system of the K3/K3 II, and only needed some minor work.

I do not find it at all unlikely that Pentax may have been working on a more substantially upgraded AF system, that simply wasn't yet ready for the K-1, which still represented excellent value even with its minor AF upgrade. And even if they put a major new AF system into their new APS-C flagship, that still wouldn't make it fullframe, so there is enough differentiation between it and the K-1.

So in conclusion - no tripping, no trolling. Just more or less realistic expectations.

Maybe not 150%
But, I mean... Yeah.

FF DSLR isn't everything. Many of us have no desire to leave APS-C, so why hold back on development?
Not saying it's likely, but a SAFOX XIII would be nice in the K-3ii successor, whenever that may be.

I think after reading the specs and seeing the pictures this must be clear to everyonve even without insiders´ confirmation. As soon as I saw no top plate LCD, 1/6000s, no HDMI, probably one SD card slot etc. it was clear to me this is not an APSC flagship. I, like many here, will wait for a real K-3 II successor.

You know.. Ricoh tries hard to burry Pentax... maybe the drop in market share will be higher this year :)

With Tamron and Sigma leaving K mount it certainly won't rise at all..

Except for the K-1 SAFOX, you are describing the K3. That would be the most minor update imaginable  I think the K-1 SAFOX won't do, I'm with anu I.

Since we will now have the KP (i'm unsure where it fits - we're told it's not the K-3 II successor) I want the true K-3 successor to be a super APS-C body - something like Nikon's D500 - awesome AF capabilities in a Pro Crop body. Something tells me Pentax won't have advanced their AF tracking enough to deliver this. I really hope they prove me wrong. There's nothing in this KP body that makes me want to replace my old K-3.

It was. No sensor struggles in good light, under excellent conditions most images could be shot with phone camera sensors (ignoring the lens requirements).

Yes, indeed, this is possible e.g. with my K-5 II.
I was hoping for focus bracketing, which Olympus cameras can do since a few years, for example (E-M1 got this feature through a firmware update...)

Maybe for greater IQ and high ISO performance. If it offers greater images that is what counts more for some photographers at the end of the day. We have to wait and see.

If it will be K-3II's replacement soon, KP is not bad move. It means 4 lines of cameras. K-70, KP, K-3III, K-1.

TBH, if you want a current Pentax camera with AF equal to or superior to the D7200 then you will be waiting for ever. Even when/if Pentax AF improves, by that stage it will be trailing a D7300 or successor, so same gap. Ricoh have had five years already and one has to conclude that Nikon-class AF is not on their agenda or they would have done it by now and supplied some more new modern lenses for APS-C (as distinct from FF) without which top quality AF is neutered anyway. I suspect that the cost of developing adequate new lenses for improved AF plays at least as much a part of Ricoh's decision as anything else. Bear in mind that iterating new camera bodies is also a way of selling off a stockpile of already manufactured lenses. Without a supply of new bodies, the lenses are worthless paperweights since no one will buy them. One has either to accept Pentax for what it is - there is plenty to like, after all - or move on.

Frankly this looks like a very weird camera. The retro design is cool I guess, as are the hand grips, but the user interface looks like a step back in terms of usability. No top LCD, awkward front e-dial, and a super-sparse settings dial. What's the point of it when there's room for more settings, especially when you lose the top LCD? It looks like there's no Wi-Fi or GPS, either. It also looks like the main LCD could be about half an inch bigger.

That said, maybe there's a redeeming factor in the official specs, so we'll just have to wait until then! But for now this looks like a stripped-down K-1 to me, and more of a one-off model than a K-3 II replacement.

One nice thing: the flash is back!

I am not ignoring them - I think all things combined, both cameras are equal. The Pentax has in-body stabilisation etc., better ergonomics, whereas the Nikon has a more sophisticated flash system, slightly better image quality, and a better AF system.

The D7200 was a proper update of the D7100, with a new and better sensor, processor, video and connectivity (WiFi). The K3 II only got GPS, pixelshift and a minor software update to the AF system, but in turn lost the built-in flash. I think objectively the D7100 and K3 are equal, whereas the D7200 is clearly a better camera than the K3 II.
