Pentax KP very first impression

This could also mean that Pentax is using a high quality noise algorithm with the KP to have better high ISO performance.

Other than ISO performance, the biggest curiosity is how well the KP performs in continuous tracking AF and how it compares with D7200 and 80D.

In the first video the sound seems to be dampened, in all other it sounds like K-70, K-S2, K-50. It could be an issue of sound settings of the recording device in the first one.

Why I won't buy a KP.

Why I wont buy the KP

- Buffer - 8 frames RAW & 7 for RAW+ (Watched that spec sheet again & again to make myself believe) - a body costing 450$ more than K-70 has a shallower buffer.
- battery life - Pentax has beaten itself at being bad at battery life - buy the grip to have more battery life without changing - beats to lighter body philosophy
- Bad pricing considering no GPS, older shutter mechanism, no hybrid AF, no LCD, more customization but less buttons so it adds up to somewhat the same thing.

- Wanted to see at-least the same AF as K-3 II and is due for a touch screen.

One positive is that this could well be the best Landscape camera till date, might dethrone K-70 as my favorite Landscape camera.

My requirement is a camera equally capable as a wildlife & Landscape, and at the opening price of KP it should have been that way.

This is my disappointment.

I'm now convinced, KP was a threat to K-3 series, hence a buffer and battery life less than that of K-70, deliberately crippled to make it more a Landscape camera than wildlife.

In fact its a more landscape camera and than the K-70. Could have been a good wildlife/sports camera too.

But it works as a good trailer for the K-3 III.

well, its very improbable that all of these features will be added in a single upgrade, but if we see 60-70% of these features and have enough differentiation between the KP & K-3 III; that will be much better. (I forgot to add that point in the end).
But that doesn't mean that all this upgrade isn't needed, it surely is - yes, all of it. Pentax needs a body worthy of fighting with D500 & 7D mk III (the same way it needed the K-1 to fight against D750/D810 and 5D series). It's just that Pentax doesn't have the tech yet & will need to follow a steep curve in technology to cover up the lag clearly seen between CaNikon & Pentax.

I've always believed that the "5 year old" SAFOX X was the odd part in K-70. The SAFOX XI (or a new system something near it) was a better and natural choice (compare D5500 & 750D) for such a body but X was deliberately used to "save" the K-3 II.

They haven't done the same with KP and went with SAFOX XI, hence my above mentioned 7D, D500 like feature-set or at least a significant part of it is a requirement for K-3 III & I think Pentax has thought over it and planned accordingly.

55 shots of JPEG only or RAW or RAW+ ?? must be JPEG only. But this isn't bad. whats claimed in rumor is 28.

so maybe its ~14 RAW & 50 JPEG.

well..... they dont want to threaten the K-3 series with KP series. Well currently its still a threat if its confirmed price will happen to be much lower.

This also means the K-3 series will need to make a much more capable successor that what the K-3 II was to the K-3 (better AF (50+ points), better tracking in AF-C, better deeper buffer with faster clearing (pentax is awful here), thumbstick, 9-10FPS burst, UHS II or XQD).

yes, focus bracketing is very practical and almost a necessity in macro & will do a lot of good, if present. In fact I want focus bracketing and automated focus stacking - using the concept of how HDR is created using exposure bracketing.

motion bracket could only mean shutter speed bracketing - how much motion blur you need, and DOF bracketing should be Aperture bracketing.

I'm not sure, but I think It was possible to get shutter bracketing it using workarounds like having constant ISO & Aperture with bracketing enables, in case of Aperture bracketing, shutter was kept constant.

Its just that now its a dedicated feature.

I have assumed here that the KP is cost wise an inferior camera, I'm just assuming that the rumors are wrong. Cant understand why would people buy a camera with no top LCD, larger battery, better build quality, no gps and an inferior shutter at the same or higher cost than something which has all these.

so no GPS for KP since O-GPS being sold separately as per updated rumors... hmm... cost & weight cuttings.... also 1/6000th max mechanical shutter means it has the same shutter mechanism from K-70.

so now there is Motion bracket, depth of field bracketing - shutter and aperture bracketing - I always wanted these.

looks like the KP is a mixture of all K-70+K-3 II+K-1 :) :)

India ????.... the K-70 is hard to get here, & lens availability is an issue.... price is way higher than Canon/Nikon counterpart

People want Pentax, but they must get their business right.

Seen people who wanted Pentax but went to Nikon Canon due to lens availability, service and high price, often unreasonable.

maybe price point, If you want an AF system like K-3 II and some other features like more buttons etc from K-3 II, but dont want the pricing of K-3 II, then this is a good deal.

For me the K-70 was very good, but the 11 pt AF was dreadful. Wanted some AF-C tracking - not possible with 11 pts. I also wanted a few more custom buttons, and there are ample on the KP.

maybe they are reserving more sophisticated AF system for the K-3 II's successor.....

If true, then this would be great.

Dont have nikon gear

my point is not about Dynamic range or lens availability - thats very good.

My point was regarding the D7200. - delabreaker

It does not have any articulation for its screen.

the re is no focus peaking, zebra.

no aperture change in live view - dealbreaker

no histogram.

Overall nikon's live view is bad, maybe the FF series d750 onwards are good and D500 (still no histogram there), alsom not sure about electronic level in D7200. I'd really like to have a good live view performance and also functionality. Pentax is a killer here, just the way Nikon is in fast action.

just hope D7300 fixes these things - would be a good deal for me.;);)

you just wrote this for me..... Pentax wont satisfy you in wildlife/sports, while Nikon will disappoint you in landscapes.

Only reason I might lean towards Nikon is here in my region Nikon lenses are available, while many Pentax lenses aren't available, & when they are, they're priced ridiculously.

I think Pentax is sandwiching a separate camera line with the KP.

What they might be doing in take some low end features from the K-70 (battery, less buttons, no LCD, plastic body etc) but have some high end features like extra dial, 27 AF points etc.

This might well be the competition for 70-80D or D7200. While the K-3 II's true successor will be (hopefully:p :p) competing with likes of 7D and D500 with higher burst, buffer & better AF. Maybe this is why the KP isnt getting an update in AF system, whih Pentax could be reserving for the K-3 III.

If all this is true, then it means the KP will be priced between the K-70 & K-3 II. It also could mean then the K-3 III will be made more like the 7D MK III and the D5000 rather than like D7200 or 80D.

So maybe the K-3 line is splitting, just like the 60D,70D,80D is kept separate from the 7D series.

Things will be more clear once we learn the full KP specs and price. :) :)

If you see carefully, the flash surrounds a protruding block, maybe that's where the GPS unit is. As far as GPS button is concerned, if at all GPS/Compass is present, I think the 3 C & 3 Fx buttons are there for a reason. We may even have the option to decouple the AF-L & AE-L could be decoupled using one of these custom buttons & dials. One of the Cx should be assignable to ISO.

I hope we have the flash commander, composition adjustment, custom P-Line functions and ISO customization (how liberal or conservative the change in ISO is).

Also I want an improvement in AF tracking, buffer clearance and pixel shift to be made more practical with reduced time.

I wanted the articulated screen of K-70 and the AF points & extra buttons of K-3 II, I think I've got it here (assuming the customization options are liberal in number unlike the K-70).

Now I've to see how good Pentax will be pricing it. I'm somewhat happy that this one skips the LCD, and I wouldn't mind if it has a single card slot or if the build quality is more like K-70 instead of K-3 II (it already looks more plastic than metal) since this will help reduce cost.

I don't care about video, so thats one less thing to worry about. I want Pentax to skip investing too much in video in one line and make it still-centric and have a separate line for video, like the GH5 with a smaller sensor for 4K or 8K with AF optimized and stabilized lenses so as to keep both dedicated photographers & videographers happy.

I think you are assuming a lot here, some features might as well work as good or better than before. too early to take a call..:) :) :) :)

saw a 1000$+ figure on the page. Is that a rough estimation?

with no bump in AF points, no top LCD, I'm expecting it to be <1000$ body only without the grip.
