Hello,
Does anyone know if you can deactivate the SDM on a 18-270 and convert to screwdrive? (Or DC, which would be wonderful!)

Greetings All,
I'm new to Pentax Forums, but I've been following this thread for a while, as the SDM failed on my recently purchased (used and no longer under warranty) DA*16-50. After reading many posts and many possible ways to go about this conversion, I picked up a used K100D today for under $100, and within a half hour, now have a working lens once more. I couldn't be happier! My suggestion is to get your hands on a K100D; the process really was simple using this body (and I'm not a super-techy guy). Activating the debug menu only requires holding down the AE-L and INFO button at the same time while turning on the camera. At that point, the firmware version displays on the screen and you must press MENU, MENU, INFO. This bring you to a basic debug menu; press MENU again, and you are where you need to be. Select LENS EEPROM R/W, and then select LENS EEPROM STORE. This saves the data on your SD card. Turn off the camera and remove the SD card.
I downloaded Notepad ++ on my PC, and opened up the LENSEEP.LNS file stored on the SD card. Before editing the file however, save a backup copy on your computer should you want to convert back to SDM at any point. Following the instructions in previous posts, I changed the "C0" to "80" where indicated and saved the file back on to the SD card. Enter the debug menu on the K100D once more, select LENS EEPROM R/W, and then select LENS EEPROM LOAD. You're done!
The process may seem intimidating, but it's really straightforward using the K100D. I strongly recommend picking one up if you want to convert to screwdrive quickly and easily. I'd be happy to help out, as I just did it this evening and it's fresh in my mind!
Cheers,
- Dan
