Missing the lens boat..!

clackers -

Yea, page 45 (close MrB1).
The 50mm lens I'm speaking of appears to be an inexpensive lens. It came kitted with the camera (another clue as to its "possible" capability). It has a plastic adapter ring. I assumed it wasn't a high class lens with the plastic ring and cheap cost.
I'll give both lenses some tweaking later next week, see what happens. I'll need to do the adjustments at a couple of different distances and then average the adjustments, if any.
Hoping this helps a bit.
Thanks.

What makes you think I'm "chucking"...ANYTHING..? The only camera item I've ever "chucked" was an "old" Tamron 18-200 lens. And I really didn't "chuck" it. I took it (mostly) apart to see how lenses are put together, then put it back together. Though I must admit, I never did give it a try to see if it still worked...I really didn't care because it was so bad to begin with..! It currently sits on top of my safe collecting dust.

Thanks for the comments.

Some understand the problem some didn't get my need requirements.
No...I've never seen anyone change from one lens to another lens in the time it takes to spin the ring on the zoom lens, so multiple lenses are still out.
The zoom ranges noted, and my comment about trying the current lens at 50mm and 60mm to see if the other (60-250 and similar) Pentax lenses could be used seemed to say that these wont work as the short end is still too long. I did really want the 60-250 Pentax lens...it just wont work for my uses.
Use a tripod/mono-pod...that person didn't read my comments..! Speed is required. By the time I put even a mono-pod down, get the height adjusted, attach the camera, that shot plus many other picture possibilities have long since passed..! Plus, I'm not that shaky yet..! Again, my other cameras do well.

Multiple cameras are out because of traveling considerations. Much difficulty there. This is why I'm asking about adjustments I may have missed within the camera.
Yes, I do use JPEG for everything. I guess this may be more of a hindrance with this camera vs. lenses as desired than other combinations. I've just not wanted to spend a ton of time working on 75 to 150 keeper pictures per outing.
And yes, I do understand the word "sharp"...as in detail, not color, depth of field, etc.
I doubt that the K3 "should" be sharper than the 6D Canon, but I'd think it would be nearly similar, much like my A 77II. I don't think an APS-C sensor can match full frame sensors for detail acquired.

At least for now, I guess this camera is relegated more to stationary object shows where the cars, planes are just sitting. Too bad, I had great hopes for the K3 at the various car and bike races, RC car and plane racing and air shows where there is flight. It still requires a better lens even for stationary pictures. I did have reservations about the "Tamron"/Pentax lens, but it does have the reach I need..!

One statement from above...is there lens micro-adjustment in this camera that I missed ? I'll go looking...thanks for the reminder.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

Mike

P.s. - Boris, clackers and a couple others, good reading, thanks

I seem to be missing the boat here, lens wise.
I know there's a good camera inside the K3 package, but the zoom package I need just doesn't seem to be on my side.

I have a Canon 6D with the much maligned 28-300L and 35-350L lenses that produce nicely sharp pictures.
I have a Canon Sl1 with an old Tamron 18-250 lens that produces very sharp pictures.
I have a Sony A 77II, with the lowly 18-250 Sony branded Tamron lens that produces very sharp pictures.
Not too long ago, I bought the K3, with a, similar to the above lenses lens, the Pentax branded Tamron 18-270 lens. It does not produce even close to sharp pictures.

1. Anti-aliasing filter off.
2. Noise filters off, to 1600.
3. Tried F-6 to F-11.
4. Have the inexpensive (cheap ?) 50mm lens, produces sharpness similar to the 18-270 lens.

And no, not into dragging two or three lenses around. Plus, I don't know anyone that can change lenses fast enough to keep up with the distances I need to cover, to keep up with the action (various forms of Motorsports, air shows) going on.

Obviously my hands are steady enough for the other cameras (actually did about a half a days testing today with all of the above cameras, shooting the "same" non-moving object, at about a 60ft. distance away)...so...
Am I missing a K3 adjustment somewhere or...?

I like a lot of things about the K3, but for its severe lack of sharpness. Is it that there just isn't the lens range that I need in a good Pentax lens ? I tried some 50mm and 60mm lens range shots a coupla weekends ago with the K3 to see of the 50-250 Pentax would be usable...it wont work. The 50mm end is just way too long.

Thanks for any help or push in the right direction.
Even saying that a Pentax lens doesn't exist for my needs..!

I do believe they (the truck lug nuts are some sort of steel. I see them all the time on the SoCal freeways. The ones I've seen, are NOT plastic. Plastic doesn't get rust marks..!
While they "could" be plastic, they also might not be.

I also have been strictly a Canon user, all the way back to the 10D. I currently use an SL1 and a 6D.

THEN...I got wondering. All the "fan-boy" reports of my camera is better than your camera, EVEN though they have NEVER owned or even shot with any other brand..! I decided to find out what "I" like best. While it's taken a while to collect them, and all of the cameras are not in the quite in same league, they are still very representative of the brands.

In order of my preference -
1. Canon (SL1 & 6D)
2. Pentax (K3)
3. Sony (A77 II)
4. Nikon (D5200)

Actually...the top three are fairly close. Only the Nikon stay's in the garage without a case...most of the time.
Each camera has it's points, good, not a deal breaker and not so good This includes the available lenses for each brand. I spent a good amount of money on two Nikon lenses...still not happy. And it's more than "just" the Nikon lens.

Just dont put the camera down in the sand or asphalt paved ground and twist it around..!

I've been in some pretty dusty, dirty places with my various cameras over many years. Funny how with just a "little" care, I have not had any problem with marring IN ANY WAY, of the screens OR lenses on my cameras.

Unless you take pictures in sand storms, screen protectors, a waste of money.

K3 question

Yea, on one hand, my main camera is a 6D Canon. I'm able to get very clean, detailed shots with almost any lens. Even the big 28-300L that some think is garbage. I've bought a Nikon (D5200), a Sony (A77II), now the Pentax (K3) to see what I like. In my opinion, one "cannot" berate one brand or raise the level of one brand over another...without actually seeing what the other brands "actually" have to offer. NOT...just what they read about..! Not that I put down a camera in any form, BUT I can now, talk somewhat intelligently on the good bad and indifferent on the various brands when people ask.
I like the Sony except for the electronic view finder... The Pentax, I'm really beginning to like. All these adjustments to play with..! The Nikon, while it's the lowest class of the bunch, it still tells me a lot about the brand. Not including the full frame versions obviously.
I'm looking for "detail" in my pictures. Interesting to see the detail of things now that I have things better worked out with the K3 now. Some things are nice and crisp, clean looking and some are a bit less detailed..!?
I've tried from F6.3 to F11 with this lens, finding F8 to be the clearest, best detailed... Taking a picture of the same thing, from the same (within reason!) distance.
I can see dust on one part, and a part about 2" away (sideways), about 1/2" farther back/away, the dust is clear and obvious, but the threads on a fastener are not nearly as clean, detailed. But other parts around the fastener are nearly as clean as the dust on the fitting..!?
Ok...I'm probably being too picky now, and trying to compare APS-C to full frame pictures..! Use and more experimentation will tell me what I can see and what I can.
As noted, so far the K3 is doing well against the other cameras I have.

Funny..!
Sorry but yes, I do know the difference.

I'm using JPG.
I did have the noise reduction turned "off" at the lower ISO. I tried a few more things without good results.
THEN...I turned the noise reduction "on" to the lowest level for all ISO (except the highest couple of settings)...wha-la...nice pictures..! I also have the anti-aliasing filter "off" to try to keep as much of the detail as possible.

Thanks all for the ideas.

Mike

P.S. - The photo site I've been using has gone to a different setup, and I haven't made the change yet, so no pictures until I make the change. But in any case, noise is noise !

K3 question

Question about the noise in my new K3's pictures.
While I don't know everything about these cameras, I have had and gotten good pictures out of DSLR's (mostly various Canon's) for many years.

I took a few shots with my new K3 getting used to it and to set the camera parameters for what I like to see. While the pictures look just fine at full screen on my 20" monitor, blown up to 100%, there seems to be a lot of noise.
I've adjusted the anti-aliasing filter, off, 1 and 2. Off is the best. I've messed with the noise settings also. While I don't want to mute the pictures with too much noise reduction, I still have too much noise even as low as ISO400.
Also, I know the lens I have is no where near the "top-o-the line"...it's the Pentax/Tamron 18-270. While I know it's sharpness has something to be desired, I don't think it's the cause of the noise. Also, its sharpness is better than I expected..!

I know it's gotta be me/my adjustments that allowing this to happen. I know I haven't given you much to go on, here, but any ideas, something I'm forgetting...would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

60-250 vs. Sigma 50-500

You mention that the two lenses I mention aren't really comparable. Thinking about it, neither are the two that you mention. They are kinda the same difference..!
With the 50-500, vs. the 60-250, the low end is much the same... With the 150-450 you mention, the high end is much the same..! Same difference...

I wouldn't use much past 300+mm of the Sigma lens. But would like a little more than the 250mm that the Pentax offers.
And "both" are pushing the limits of needing good closeup. The 50 and the 60mm would be much better at about 28mm for most of what I do. I'll take a few shots at 60mm next weekend of things I normally use around 28/30mm and see how things turn out.

On one hand, the size and weight of the big Sigma aren't a problem, the crispness/sharpness is. So, I guess if the experimentation goes well next weekend, I'll be ordering the 60-250 Pentax...

Thanks for the info.

What's a Hummel..? Hummer ?

While I don't see these two lenses as "that" different, other than the final reach...they start out "much" the same. I somewhat understand what's being said. The size and weight aren't of a concern.

MikeP -
Thanks for the one on one answer, that is what I was looking for.

Some didn't notice the "one" lens comment, but thanks for your time.

While I normally don't "need" much past 300mm, that's why the comparison question, 300+mm, vs. 250mm max., it has come in handy. But in both cases, the 50mm or the 60mm, are a "bit " too long..!
The Tamron/Sigma 16 or 28/300mm lenses are out there I know, but from my past (Canon) experience, they aren't "that" sharp. I guess I'll have to wait for the Sigma 16-300mm to come out and see what happens.
Comming up next weekend, I'll give the 18-270 a few shots at 60mm for the closer shots and see how that fairs. Maybe the 60-250mm will work out.

Thanks again for everyone's comments.

60-250 vs. Sigma 50-500

Hey all, new to Pentax. Just bought a K3, with the 18-270 Tamron/Pentax lens.
I've got a couple of the current brands of SLR's on the market. They all have their good points and not so good points. I decided to give the K3 a try from the various reviews available. So far, I'm very pleased.

I'm in search of a "sharp" lens somewhere in this (16-300) range. I know it's a long shot, but with most of the pictures I take, this is the range I need. There is a couple of reasons I'm not considering multiple lenses. Actually, with the adjustments within the camera, the 18-270 isn't quite as bad as I thought, sharpness wise. But...I'm still looking to improve.

Anyway, as the title suggests, has anyone compared the Pentax 60-250 with the Sigma 50-500 lens ? As noted, actual lens sharpness is my main concern. I know using the middle F-stop adjustments help and all, but just curious about the lenses themselves.

Thanks for any help

Mike
