This is a wonderful sight; some of my favorite shots are with my long lens, where I reach out and almost touch the subject. My lens of choice is the Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm. At some point I will post some of my favorite pictures. On the other end of the continium I love to shoot macro photos of flowers, butterflies etc. Again, a great sight and I am happy to have discovered it!!!

One and Only, thank you for your input and I concur with your observation on the 18-250. In retrospect I should have gone with the 18-135 and I may add it to the collection. The 50-500 is a go to lens for wildlife and when I want to reach out and touch a distant object with excellent results. I like your observation on adding a prime lens for macro work; do you have anyone you like for close photos of flowers and insects etc? For the latter I have been using the Sigma 17-70. I have heard good things about the Sigma 35mm 1.4f.

---------- Post added 03-15-16 at 02:57 PM ----------

UncleVanya, I just responded to another about the Sigma 35mm 1.4f and I assume the Pentax 35mm would be in the same ballpark; however I will probably use my 43mm since it is close and give some study to the 100mm. Thanks for your input.

UncleVanya, thank you for your suggestions and I do use the 50-500mm quite a bit for capturing animal photos (zoo, birds, anything with a distance factor). My copy of the 50-500mm provides excellent detail and I am very happy with the results. The mothballed items are being treated that way. The 18-250 as you mentioned is being used as a walk around lens in conjunction with the 17-70 and primes. Thank you again for your input.

I was recently accessing my camera equipment and considering what I should add/remove to give me the optimum mix and flexibility while at the same time eliminating redundency. Following is the inventory of my equipment package (major items); I would be interested in feedback on gaps in the listing that, from your experience, would be strong supplements. I realize that this type of exercise is in the eye of the beholder and the venues of most interest, but it would be interesting to see what others are doing and why. Following are the cameras (newest to oldest), lens (widest to telephoto) and miscellaneous items. The subject matter in which I have the most interest are: expansive scenery (water, mountains, forests), macro (flowers, insects, animals), very little involving people or high population venues. In summary, from what I have listed I would be interested in constructive suggestions to supplement what I currently have that will add to my overall flexibility. Thank you in advance for your input and by submitting your suggestions you will get feedback on your own equipment from others.

Cameras
K3, K10D, Pentax ZX-M, Pentax ZX-5N (latter 2 not used at this time)

Lens
Sigma 8-16mm 4.5-5.6f, Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5f macro, Sigma 18-250mm 3.5-6.3f macro, SMC-FA 28-200mm (not used or working properly),SMC-FA Pentax 43mm 1.9f, SMC-DA 50mm 1.8f, SMC-FA Pentax 77mm 1.8f, Sigma 50-500mm 4-6.3f (Bigma), Quantaray Teleconverter 2X (hardly ever used)

Filters
Vivitar 52mm UV, Circular Polarizer, Florescent; Hoya 62mm UV, Polarizer, ND; Cokin system filter (most colors, configurations and effects)

Miscellaneous

K-1 So What Is Full Frame Going To Provide Over A Crop Frame DSLR
Posted By MRCDH

Let's view the major differences: 1) Field of view larger with full frame; 2) Broader dynamic range and better low light/hign ISO performance providing higher quality image on full frame; 3) Full frame preferred in architectural photography due to a wider angle, which is useful in tilt/shift lens; 4) Full frame has a shallower depth of field than a crop sensor DSLR, which can be beneficially aesthetic (more bokeh); 5) Crop sensor DSLR's offer many advantages when it comes to cost and when married to a telephoto lens many of the aforementioned full frame advantages become somewhat less compelling; 5) crop frame DSLR are currently more compact; 6) high end crop sensor DSLR's can provide quality similar to that of a full frame at a fraction of the cost; 7) full frame DSLR provides a bit better overall quality, but the salient point is the type of photography that you shoot and your budget.
It will be interesting to see how the new Pentax K-1 is accepted and at what cost level it will stabilize at. If the cost differential becomes compelling it may prove very interesting.
What are your observations and thoughts on the subject?

My initial impression and review of the Sigma 8-16mm, succinctly put WOW!! I plan to go to Sedona, AZ this weekend to capture some of the beauty of that area and give the lens a test. In reading about the wide angle lens three suggestions frequently appear (1) have a primary subject/theme of the photo to draw the viewers eye into the photo; 2) get close to the subject of the theme; 3) use leading/converging lines where possible. Furthermore, the hyperfocal distance will be about 3 to 4 feet into the picture. My first impressions of the Sigma 8-16mm is that it will be a fun lens that delivers superb quality and sharpness throughout the zoom range. I have heard it said that photography is about having fun creating and capturing images and this lens certainly gives the impression that it will deliver tons of fun.
I purchased the lens through Amazon and the price for a new lens was $524, which is quite reasonable since I have seen $700 give or take from a number of other sources.

Daz, I am truly dazzled! I will highlight this posting and will reference it to everyone who might have a question on how to specifically address any additional questions I may pose on any forum in the future. By the time I am through reviewing this I will apply for my Phd in perspective, convergence, Keystone distortion, perspective distortion et al, and the overall handling of ultra-wide photography in general. Thank you for all the time you spent in assembling this information and I will take the appropriate time to study and digest it. As it has been said "Seek and ye shall find, knock and it will be opened unto you".

DAZ, dazzle me with some specifics that address what you are referencing or picture examples that makes the point. I will check out the terminology and see if I can find some examples and description that fills in the blanks. Thank you for your suggestion.

---------- Post added 02-22-16 at 10:10 PM ----------

Arjay, good point, it appears from other photos that I have seen with this lens that the main subject should be as central as possible in the photo. I will keep your suggestion in mind when doing my shooting.

---------- Post added 02-22-16 at 10:16 PM ----------

WPRESTO, thank you for your suggestion, from the pictures that I have seen (panoramas and inside of buildings) the lens seems to be held rather level as you suggest. Because of the curviture of the lens one would reasonably expect increased distortion as the lens is more or less than level. As you suggest when distortion is encountered it can be corrected by cropping. Thanks for insight!!

I have a K3 and a K10D and recently purchased a Sigma 8-16 and I expect it to be delivered in early March 2016. I am interested in receiving suggestions from current users on how to optimize the performance of the lens and to create imaginative effects through the myriad of capabilities afforded by the K3 or approaches you have found by experimentation or examples that you have seen or read concerning the lens. I have seen some examples on Google; however, I have always been amazed at the ideas that come out of this forum. If you have examples of photos that document your point that would be ideal. Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences with the Sigma 8-16.

I responded to your comment and did not notice that you are from AZ. I tried to find Tumbleweed but the only references were those for Tempe; your photos are Valley based so I assume you are in the Phoenix area. I take it that the Sigma repair center you mentioned is in the Phoenix area. I will have to look that up for future reference. Have you visited Butterfly Wonderland to photograph the large selection of butterflies that are flying freely around the enclosure? Adam (the forum webmaster) and his father joined a group of us a number of weeks ago and it was an interesting shoot. Thanks again for your feedback and I will post some photos from the 8-16mm once it arrives and I have a chance to get it in my comfort zone.

Thank you for your response; this is the type of information I hoped to receive and what was done to correct the problem if one is detected. What model camera do you have? Was there any explanation of why the focus needed such a large adjustment. I know with Sigma lenses they can be rather sensitive and if they are bumped or accidentally hit that it can throw the focus off; maybe there was some serious jolts during the shipping process. Hopefully mine will work properly out of the box, but if there is a problem that there are avenues to be pursued rather than just sending it back. Thank you again for your feedback!!

Bengan, Amen! I was just wondering if there were any pecularities with this lens in particular since it is a super wide angle that if one is not familiar with it could draw incorrect assumptions and think there is a problem where there is none, or suggested types of shots that would indicate that all aspects are functioning properly. Thanks for your feedback.

I have a new K3 and a K10D and recently purchased a "new" Sigma 8-16mm lens through Amazon and it is being sent from Japan and will arrive in early March. I would appreciate any suggestions from those who have the lens and those knowledgable about testing a lens for problems to share with me some ideas I should consider to determine if the lens is "new" and that it is functioning as it should under various shooting scenarios. In other words to determine if the lens is a keeper or should be returned.

Thank you in advance for your input!!

The best price I found was on Amazon, $524, for a new Sigma 8-16mm lens from Japan Express Shop. The only confidence I have is Amazon sponsor of this vendor; price seems a bit too low for a new lens. Is this one of those too good to be true situations? Has anyone heard or had any experience with this vendor? Thanks in advance for any input before I pull the ripcord.

RobA_Oz, thank you for your response; I have seen some sources since I first posted my question and I am doing due diligence to find the optimum price/service provider. I see you are from Tasmania, Australia; that is a location that is on my to visit list. I was recently looking at the Wing House, which is a unique structure that is for lease with unbelievable views.

WPRESTO, thank you for your input and suggestions. I hope to zero in on an 8-16 soon. I see that you are from MA; I used to live in Marblehead, MA and loved it. Marblehead is truly a unique town (one of best of all the locations in which I lived). I hope that you didn't get to hard hit in the last storm. I was watching it from afar (2500 miles away).

I have a K3 and K10D and I am interested in the Sigma 8-16mm; from what I have seen the picture quality is excellent. What advice do you have on the best uses of the lens, settings, strengths, weaknesses. I understand that it is not being produced in the Pentax mount and Amazon is only offering sources from Japan. Any further information on the best locations to purchase the lens would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your input.
