Thanks! I do like this framing better, and I appreciate the guidance. I do tend to boost my colors too much. It's an ongoing struggle to tread the line between realistic and "ooh pretty colors", lol. I also need to calibrate my monitor so that's a thing. I appreciate your input.

Tell me what you guys think...specifically concerning the crop. Should I go in closer on his face? Also, critique any other aspects that you wish/is this a good shot in general? It was one of the better ones on a very cloudy day. Hard to shoot animals, which like to move, on a day with low light I've found.
EDIT: Also, is it saturated enough (either overall, or selective colors)? I feel like I tend to over-saturate my shots, so when I compensate I then worry that I overcompensate, thereby under-saturating the colors...

I stumbled across Google's DeepDream AI image processor the other day, and I've been addicted to seeing how a lot of my favorite shots look when I run them through it. It uses a convolutional neural network to find and enhance patterns in images via algorithmic pareidolia, thus creating a dream-like hallucinogenic appearance in the deliberately over-processed images. It's a simple upload and click a button process, so it kinda feels like cheating, but the results are stunning. It's kind of random though, so it's hard to tell what you're gonna get until you try it. This is a shot I ran through it that came out looking like a painting. I really dig it. I included the original shot for reference.

I really like these type Macro shots, but what always bugs me is that you can't get the whole plant in frame if you wanna get that close up. Does anyone know if there's a way to take multiple macro shots and stitch them together, sort of like a panorama, to create one large file of the whole plant in frame that still has amazing magnification? Anyway, here's the shot... |

I know this isn't a technically accurate exposure, but there's something about this shot I still like. It reminds me of a scene from a dimly lit science fiction film or something. What do you guys think?

Hey, thanks for the input! Didn't expect to still be getting comments on this image. Yea I think the brightness around the plant is a combination of post processing and just how the image looked. I added some vignette in post, so that accounts for the darkened edges, and I think the lens I used has a little natural vignette already because the edges were darker in the unaltered photo. Also, maybe the darkness of the plant makes the bright blue background seem brighter right around the plant due to the contrast? I dunno, but that makes sense to me.
Your advice on the crop is something I'll take into consideration. I actually wanted to do that, but I didn't want to cut off the stem on the right, and the top of the photo has no more headroom due to how I framed it. What you see in this crop is the top of the frame. I also wanted to keep it a 16x9 ration for viewing, but if I print this I'm thinking of changing that or going freeform on a canvas or matting it. ---------- Post added 06-08-18 at 12:56 PM ---------- Hey thanks! I'm surprised I'm still seeing comments on this old shot. Just because you piqued my curiosity, here's how the shot looks both vertical, and in B&W, lol: |

This was just a test shot with my new lens, and it turned out amazing (in my amateur opinion). Give it to me straight, what do you guy's think?

So, I adjusted the crop, and I do think it's better. The mirror is still ever so slightly visible, but I didn't want to sacrifice that much "headroom" I feel like more space above the bridge seems more balanced. I'll probably clone out the mirror completely later when I have time to get it "perfect". What do you think? IMGP2702.jpg by Michael Barnard, on Flickr
I also adjusted the contrast a little.

This was just a shot I took, on a whim, on a neat dark street downtown. Not too much thought put into it. Well, tell me what you guys think?

Just a shot of the niece taken when my Brother was in town. It's a b&w conversion, and I really like how it captured her eyes. Thx for looking! |

I'm pretty familiar since I've been shooting with an ME Super for about 2 years now. Thanks for all the info you guys. I've been shooting with both for a few days, and the 50mm seems to work very well for portraits, where the 28 is pretty good for wider angle bits, but not quite wide enough for me to get some of the scenery I wanted. I'm already eyeing a 18-55mm Pentax-DA on eBay though.
However, I have run into another issue. I've been editing all my photos in Lr5. They look great on multiple different screens such as my dual monitors, which are calibrated as best I could, my phone, and my HDTV which I used to show them to family. However, tonight I decided to print a couple. They came out way darker than what was shown on any screen. At this point, I think it may be my crappy printer, but I'm not sure...any suggestions? I'll post a couple here, in case anyone has a pro calibrated monitor. You guys tell me if they are dark on your screen? Keep in mind, I'm an amateur, these might not be the best shots, lol. I'm learning though!

Oh...thank you. That chart is exactly what I needed. Guess I should have done a little more research. Thanks guys. This really clears things up for me. Now I just can't wait for my camera to get here!
