This beautiful Monarch butterfly represents a fragile life form, it's not uncommon for their wings to get torn up. The habitat of the Monarch is in danger, they will only breed on milkweed, and milkweed has become scarce in many places. And with all of this, these butterflies migrate thousands of miles

Fragile History Pentax K5-IIs, SMC M-28/2.8, 1/90s, f8, ISO 80, handheld.
This is a remnant of a "combine" -- a group of canal locks -- on what was the Black River Canal in northern New York state. Built in the 1820s, the canal was deemed uneconomic in 1900 and abandoned, more's the pity. This is one place where you can see the construction methods and appreciate the amount of work that went into building the canal as well as the work required to move goods up and down its length. Most of the canal infrastructure is invisible now, except to the practiced eye, if that. In time even portions like this will become obscured and remain as fodder for future archaeologists and historians.

Great choice, fragile history is a great title. I live about 10 miles from the Miami-Erie Canal, which ran from the Miami River in Southwest Ohio to the Maumee River in Northwest Ohio and on to Lake Erie. We have miles and miles of existing canal, the tow paths have become hiking trails. Your locks are very similar to the locks in Lockington, Ohio, where they have built timber frames inside of the empty locks to keep the ground pressure from collapsing them inwards. The construction of those canals was an engineering marvel in that time, but the locks were too fragile to stand up to time.
