This sounds promising. Where is the AF sensor and how should I clean it. Only vids I can find relate to the cmos sensor. Thanks!

Factory Reset

Hi. There is no attempt to focus the lens at all; it just stays where it was. Switching to manual focus, when in focus, this is also not recognised. It is as if the sensor does not ‘see’ any image.

Hi, I have some issues with my new K3iii not focussing through the viewfinder. I have tried all suggestions and also done a reset through the spanner/wrench menu. Running the latest firmware 2.01. Is there a bigger reset option anywhere that completely sets all internals to the factory settings by some combination button push or similar. Thx.

Changed settings as suggested and done a reset from the spanner menu. Same results with Sigma 10-20 zoom, 70-300 zoom and the 18-55 from my old K10D. Used to work fine so I am wondering if something may be broken - but can't see why it would still work and focus in live view.

Thanks Kobie - Not this unfortunately.

Cannot focus through viewfinder, focusses fine in LV

Hi, I have been playing with settings and I seem to have done something which means that using Live View everything is fine but when using the viewfinder the autofocus does not work and therefore the shutter will not fire. As all is well in LV, the camera and lens appear to be talking to each other correctly so I am assuming a software glitch or setting of some form. Have tried the 'reset' function in the menu but not making any difference. In the viewfinder there is a small rectangle at the bottom with 'AF' at the top left and AF-H at the bottom. Nothing else in the actual view other than composition guides. Does not appear to alter with the function dial and the camera does not focus using half pressure on the shutter button or on pressing the AF button (both being set to work from the sub menu). Any help or ideas appreciated! Thanks, Al.

K-3 needed accessories for astro, time-lapses & landscapes

What kind of astro? Lunar or deep space? For long exposure, the tripod stability is a lot more important than the tripod weight - so for travelling I would say go for the sturdiest that you are comfortable carrying around. A short steady one would be better than a tall wobbly one.

Double stacking rear multipliers?

I would use as few multipliers as possible. a single 1.4x is probably ok, but stacking them will degrade the image quality to a greater extent than the pixel resolution of the camera. Or to put it a different way, I would use the 1.4x and then crop and zoom on the PC. The K-3 has a good number of pixels and so can take a fair amount of zoom (1.4x would be no issue at all) for normal viewing. Certainly the way to go for viewing on a monitor and also for prints - depending on the print size.

Try it for a couple of weeks and see if there are any other issues. If not, then for the price seems like a reasonable deal.

If taking a lot of shots, you could also consider using an astronomy photo stacker.

Landscape Distracting?

Right idea, but the bush is too dominant. The horizon is about right at 2/3 of the way up the frame. An alternative would have been pointing the camera to get the horizon 1/3 of the way up which would give a very different feel to the composition and make it less busy overall.

Not a problem I have encountered, but I would either turn down the brightness or else turn it off.

Hi All,

I live about 100yds south of Dartmoor in the town of Ivybridge.

I got into SLR photography in my early teens when my Uncle Joe bought me a Cosina CSL with an M42 mount lens. The CSL morphed into an ME super (great little camera) with an M42 adaptor and that in turn morphed into a Ricoh XR-X, in my completely biassed opinion one of the more underrated 35mm cameras of the time. Built like a tank. Looks a bit like one too. Angles everywhere and hardly a curve in sight.

Well, the digital era came along and grabbed me and before I knew what I was doing, there I was at Mifsuds in Brixham becoming the owner of a barely used <500shot Samsung GX-10 which until 2 weeks ago was my only digital SLR body (I can't bring myself to let the XR-X go). The GX has served me well for years although of late it only got pulled out of the bag for motorsport and airshows. Having got the bug back, I am now the proud owner of a K-3 with Ricoh branding on the back. Almost full circle :-) Other bits of kit are Sigma 10-20, Schneider-Kreuznach 18-55, full-frame Sigma 70-300, a vintage 500mm catadioptric lens & a Slik-88 tripod. I must close that 55-70 gap at some point.

In essence I have stuck with Pentax lens-mount based cameras for 40 years. If any members can send along some nice sunny weather, please do so.

Cheers & Happy Snapping. :)

What's the first lens you would mount on your new FF Pentax DSLR?

Sigma 70 - 300mm. It's the only FF lens I still have! I would take a photo of a single tree on Dartmoor, up by Harford. Previously photographed on a GX-10 and it is the only photo I have ever had published however it did make a full page spread in 'Dartmoor Magazine'. Probably more information than you wanted. But you did ask :-)

Hi - The Pentax website makes mention of the O-GPS1 with the K-5 and K-r. Does it allow astrotracing photography with the K-3?
