Alternative lens hood for Tokina 28-80?

I really want to like this lens, but using a screw-on lens hood is such a hassle that it usually just stays in my bag.

B&H and Adorama used to carry the replacement hood (BH-775) from time to time, but it seems like they've stopped.

Has anyone with this lens found a good alternative lens hood? I'm thinking a non-standard hood might be even better, if I can find one thats meant for a slightly longer lens (to make up for the APS-C crop issues).

Alternately, would anyone who has this hood be willing to measure it and provide dimensions so I can have a starting point for my search?

Thanks!

Those are some *really* impressive results, and only acts to confirm my need for a K-5, seeing that trying to brighten the darks is the most common thing I have to do in Lightroom.

Lens for street shooting in the City

If you feel like you absolutely must get a new lens, you can't beat the DA21 for this role. Its tiny, wide, inconspicuous, and has wide enough DOF (even wide-open) to make shooting from the hip totally viable. Its my go-to lens for street shooting in NYC.

My friends, we are vindicated. After years of being second (or third...) best when it comes to sensor performance, we're now where we always knew Pentax was capable of being. On top!

I don't think size was really the issue with the setup. All the other manufacturers had booths where it was obvious that one could go up and play with their newest products, whereas from afar, the Pentax booth just looked like a display case, which might have put them off going over and having a look.

I had a chance to stop by the PDN PhotoPlus expo this afternoon here in NYC, and I'm really glad I did.

Besides the fact that conferences are always a good way to get free stuff (I walked away with a signed copy of Joe McNally's new LIFE book and a ThinkTank memory card case), its cool to have a chance to play with the sort of expensive toys you normally only see online.

Pentax has a small (okay, tiny) booth compared to the other manufacturers, but it's in a prominent area (between Olympus and Epson). They've got the 645D out to play with, and it really is a beauty.

What's cooler though is that both John Carlson (product manager who does most of the first-look videos) and Ned Bunnell (Pentax President) were at the booth to personally interact with customers and answer questions. I thought it was really neat to be able to talk with the people who design and make the cameras I love to use, and I think it says a lot about the company to see them standing behind their work like that.

If you're in the city, the show runs all day tomorrow at the Javits center, and admission to the expo hall is essentially free (google around for promo codes). So stop by and say hi, even though he's stopped blogging, Ned is super friendly and even asked what I shot with!

Right. Being aware of your surroundings is equally as important as anything else. Unfortunately, its hard to control the actions of others which might lead to things getting broken (being slammed into the stage, against other people, etc)

I absolutely feel lucky. The ironic thing is that 99% of the time I'm incredibly over-protective of my gear; its only when I'm working (shooting concerts or events) that things tend to get messy (but that's just part of the job, isn't it).

DA21 Bug: Bump'n'Stick

I adore my lil' DA21; and its without a doubt one of my most used lenses. As a result (and because I tend to be unintentionally hard on my gear), I've discovered a weird quirk in the design of the lens, and was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

In short, a blow (or bump) of sufficient force to the front of the lens will cause the focus mechanism to bind; not completely, but it will jam up and feel as if the barrel is rubbing against itself.

The first time this happened, my heart sank– my favorite lens, ruined! Being a student, I hardly had the disposable income to replace it. After trying unsuccessfully to fix it by gentle tapping or turning, I gave up. Luckily, after moping around town the rest of the afternoon, the lens got *another* bump, and just like in the movies, everything was working perfectly again!

Being the worry-wart that I am, I did thorough tests to make sure everything was indeed working fine, and it was. Focus is fast, smooth, and accurate.

Since then, I've had the lens bumped a few more times, and every time, another fortuitous (or pained and carefully aimed) bump fixes it. Finally, the last time it happened, I experimented a bit and found that simply gripping the front barrel tightly and turning it counter-clockwise about half a millimeter fixes the problem every time, and that turning it the other direction can reproduce it.

I'm far from an expert on what goes on inside a lens, so I was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light on what might be happening in these situations, and if there's anything I can do to "tighten up" the mechanism (I figure being able to turn the barrel isn't a *good* thing).

if the D7000 is spec'd/priced as rumored

This could be trouble, or it could be a boon.

Assuming the K-5 specs are as rumored, I think we might see a price reduction sooner rather than later to compete with the D7000.

Different between Safox VIII+ and Safox IX?

Honestly, I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk of this (yes, I know it was just announced, but it seems odd there are lots of posts about color options and none about the new AF).

I've long been of the camp that although, yes, historically Pentax AF has been a bit on the slow side compared to the Canikon alternatives, that the Pentax algorithms did really quite well in low light, and prioritized accuracy over speed.

That being said, it would be a huge boon if the new system has any significant advantages over the old ones, especially in terms of tracking motion.

Here's hoping the K-5 shows up with it soon as well.

K10D (and other bodies) AF adjust values

I think you're definitely right about the mirror. I noticed shooting today that my adjustments had been a bit off, but more worryingly, when the image is in sharpest focus in the viewfinder (when manual focusing), its out of focus when it hits the sensor, which must mean the mirror is out of whack enough to not line up with the sensor properly.

I'm sure I'll be able to compensate for this with AF microadjustment, and get it so that the lens auto-focuses properly, the problem will be that when it does focus properly, I'll think it hasn't!

K10D (and other bodies) AF adjust values
Posted By dantekgeek

Background:
I'd been having issues with shots not being in focus, which I thought was due to my main lens (DA21) having been knocked around quite a bit, and confirmed this morning that the combination of the lens and my K10D was back-focusing quite a bit. This afternoon, I was lucky to be able to pick up a DA35 at B&H, and after seeing the same issue on this pristine lens, figured it must be my body. I got home, went through the AF adjustments detailed in this thread, and ended up with much better results from both lenses... after making a +330um adjustment!

A third of a millimeter seems like a tremendously large distance for a mechanism with ordinarily such small tolerances.

I was wondering what adjustment values others have seen successful in the past?

I didn't mean to imply that resolution isn't important (far from it), just that it looks like the market is finally realizing that more pixels isn't the be all and end all of product quality.

This D3S is bloody amazing. Looking at the ISO 12,800 samples on the Nikon product page makes you question what you thought a camera could do.

Of note is that Nikon's new flagship product is only 12.1 MP. I hereby declare the megapixel wars over.

There is a preference in Lightroom to stack photos taken within $time of each other. Was probably designed for burst shots, but should probably work for this as well if you up the $time.

K-x on photorumors

If it turns out the K-X actually uses that A500 sensor, it will kick the pants off its big brother in terms of high ISO performance– those comparison shots with the A900 simply blew me away.

Seems to me though that if this is the case, things have been turned a bit upside down. The K-7 is a fantastic camera by all accounts, to be sure, but to have an entry level model from the same company do so significantly better at a crucial aspect of imaging. For those, like me, who have been holding out on getting the K-7 (for whatever reason), it seems like a bit of sand in the face to see that the grass really is greener somewhere else.

PS: Why would Pentax suddenly abandon Samsung sensors?

Leica Factory Uses Pentax Sensor Cleaning Stick

I was looking through the very cool DPReview gallery from their tour of the Leica factory, and noticed that they seem to be using the same orange 'gummy bear' sensor cleaning stick as Pentax sells (and I assume, uses). They're pricey, but if they're good enough for Pentax and Leica, they're good enough for me.

Just something interesting I noticed.

Sigma 30mm f1.4 - how do you like it for shooting people?

When researching the lens, I also grew worried about the front/back focus issues that seem to plague the canikon versions, so I made sure to pick up my copy in person and test it out in the store. Mine has no issues at all, and at least anecdotally, I've heard that the focus issues aren't really an issue on the K-mount version. I was lucky that the cheapest price I found online was actually through a local brick-and-mortar, but you might not be so lucky.

Shooting people is what this mens was made for. Incredibly, insanely sharp center performance, which stays mostly tip-op even wide open. Great bokeh and rendering. Its the only lens I use for my concert shots.

But, its less than ideal for things that require corner-to-corner performance, as you get some pretty nasty distortion.

Love this lens.
