If you stay in the K-5 family, I too would recommend the K-5 II or IIs. (Earlier bugs were worked out.) I love my K-5 IIs. Its shutter life expectancy is 100,000 clicks. Any you look at can be judged for remaining life by the current shutter count. I've never owned a K-3, but obviously it was a fine camera too. Its shutter life expectancy is 200,000 clicks.

Question regarding DOF.

What he said.

One thing that occurs to me is that a 100mm prime and a zoom set at 100mm may have different amounts of field curvature, where the focus plane is not flat. That could affect perceived DOF.

Lots of good advice above. I'll second JohnMc's comment about trying a (high-quality circular) polarizing filter. We normally think of using these to cut reflections off of glass and water. But they are also great for controlling not-so-noticeable reflections that can wash out color on foliage and other surfaces. Our eyes/brain may not notice them, but the camera certainly does.

Looking at your sample above, I can think of a couple of suggestions. I would say that ISO 1600 for a K-30 is rather 'ambitious'. High ISOs can reduce dynamic range in an image and add digital noise. More modern cameras (K-5 II and later) can handle ISO 1600 well. Try using a slower shutter speed and turn down ISO. No need to use 1/800 sec. on a subject that isn't moving and a relatively short focal length.

Welcome to the forum. Great to have you with us. :)

Being an avid guitar player as well as a photographer, this creative image resonates with me on two fronts. I am neither Ansel Adams nor David Gilmour, but constantly strive to improve my skills in both arenas. I look forward to seeing your other album cover shots.

Well done!
