Thanks everyone.

The colour were using a RNI5 profile, a couple... I forget which ones tbh, I think a Kodak Gold of some sorts. The Mono a Leica CCD Lut from Cobalt, both profiles were tweaked regardless. The book was a surprise gift to the couple.

K-1 Auto-focus issue?
Posted By BruceBanner

Thought I'd leave some feedback here.
So after spending quite a while trying to fine tune my lenses after using the focus sheet set up in the manner I have mentioned previously, I have come to the conclusion that my setup is inadequate for such a test.
Even making adjustments with a lens (say +7), then moving the tripod back a few inches, and then trying again, I found that +7 was no longer suitable, that essentially any adjustment I made was suitable for that lens at that exact distance to the sheet, moving the camera back and resetting things up again made the adjustments either not required or of a different value.
This was confirmed more in the field, I have now reset all values to 0.

I either need to get the focus sheet stuck absolutely flat down on a level table (no air bubbles) and then figure out a way to have my camera pointing down exactly level and 45 degrees... or perhaps come up with another method of proping the focus sheet at a 45 degree angle. I noticed you can buy plastic kinda ones etc.
Because at this point in time, im not sure if focus sheets are a bit of a nonsense, because the distance between the camera and the sheet actually gives different tweaks necessary, or if that is a result of my bad testing (more likely). It could also be that K-1 + AF is just not that good, perhaps I'm better at really using manual focus as much as possible...

Ricoh updated lens roadmap (2023.8.29)

I think for other brands like Fuji, they do 'summits', they've given up on 'roadmaps' per se (where they have a dot or line representing on something forthcoming). It's just the wording 'Roadmap', it makes it sound like something that says 'here's what we have and here's what's coming' whereas in reality its just a table now showing what is, not what will be. With Fuji I don't think anyone knew a 30/2.8 macro was coming nor that new 8/3.5. It just 'appears' our of nowhere (often leaked first as a rumour to build up hype). I honestly think that is all Pentax are doing here, simply saying they're no longer placing a dot or line on a roadmap to hint what is being worked on. No one seems to be doing that anymore so maybe Pentax need to be cut some slack. It always feels like what they do gets lost in translation and their PR is a disaster train. Of course it would be nice if Pentax did summits as well but that extends beyond their budget presumably. So, in the same way Fuji users are surprised by new offerings, so will Pentaxians. I don't feel its a huge deal.

Others speculation about Pentax K-1III
Posted By BruceBanner
Replies: 244
Views: 21,643
Interesting to see this topic being discussed here as well. I started a similar topic about what a new K-1iii would look like elsewhere a week or so ago. There was plenty of input but quite a varied response. And i think this varied response is one of the things Pentax will be aware of and may signal one of the reasons we haven't seen a K-1iii yet, they are perhaps still deciding the direction themselves.

Because Pentax have to be careful, they are not able to entertain flops like other brands, a camera that costs them a lot to make and sells few could really harm them. Whatever they do it needs to do well and outside of users of this forum (we're not getting any younger).

So then what shape and form does a K-1iii look like? I present the following scenarios;

1) it's a beefed up K-1ii, basically a D850 in Pentax clothes. We get all the goodies the D850 had, a 45mp sensor, 8fps, buffer 50 deep, more AF points etc but with added Pentax perks like it's innovative pixelshift & (new) astrotracer etc.

However... is there a market now for a DSLR like this? Let's think on this for a bit. If Pentax go to town and try and deliver to their fan base something that rivaled arguably one of the greatest DLSR's to ever exist... would it sell? Who is buying a camera like this now... especially when we have a K3III that shoots faster and a K-1 that already delivers exceptional landscape images for printing at really any size you like. I think those that would have liked a camera like this have likely already moved onto other systems and are comfortably happy. So Pentax risk here is high, spending vast amounts in making such a camera with perhaps a limited audience? In Australia the K3III was $2900AUD, the K-1ii $3400AUD, so a K-1iii will surely be getting up to that $4k mark. That is a lot of coin to try and entice those happy on their current Pentax cameras to upgrade let alone entice those that are now on other platforms to come back or give us a go...

2) a K3iii but Full Frame. The hard work has already been done, cast bigger molds, do what is needed to get a FF sensor inside the shell of the K3iii (fixed screen and all). Perhaps even lower the megapixels to producing something that keeps up with those 12fps and 30ish buffer. This should in theory require very little R&D to produce, its copying the hard work already done. But who would want this camera? Maybe actually quite a lot of folks. This now becomes the Full Frame pew pew pew machine, not meant to exactly compete with the K-1ii. In fact... a camera like this might allow for the K-1ii to stay in production and allow this camera to run along side it. Maybe this would sell well? But does this camera now run the risk of shooting the K3iii dead? Would a camera like this be Pentax shooting themselves in the foot?

3) an incremental K-1iii, basically a K70-KF transition, something like where the rear LCD screen is upgraded, much higher res, maybe touch etc. But really not many more perks than this, a production line shift version of the K-1ii. Maybe for those on APS-C Pentax and debating a K-1ii will now really be sold on the idea of a slightly better version. Maybe it is the bit of motivation needed to get them over the sales line. Maybe even a few content K-1ii owners would upgrade, enjoying the same camera but with far cleaner and higher res screen to review their work in the field. This version would be very low cost and low risk for Pentax to make.

4) a specialty K-1iii, such as a monochrome only K-1ii? We already know Pentax are working on a K3iii monochrome (which I think is fantastic by the way), and perhaps Pentax know that producing something niche like this will really appeal outside of their current user base. Maybe that is where Pentax can win the most, doing something thar appeals to the Canikony users and not just Pentaxians. Want a full frame supreme monochromatic IQ experience to be enjoyed recreationally? Pentax have you covered ;)

Personally I am not convinced we will actually see a K-1iii, it may go the way of the Z. Pentax have now 'retreated' to a very niche market and Japan prefers m43 and APS-C over FF and MF, perhaps this explains the K3iii monochrome, Pentax know this will likely be a bigger hit than a K-1iii (and I think I have to agree).

Discuss.

Thanks BigMackCam. I think I do not get enough chances to shoot just for me these days. Most of what I share is client work, which have briefs and style constraints. When opportunity comes along to shoot just for me I kinda lack motivation, slightly burnt out from client work. But a night on the town with a mate, a GRIIIx, it feels easy and not a hassle to invoke some creativity. Glad you like the work.

Thanks robgski, GR + city night + mono is a match made in heaven :)

I recently posted the new excellent Ricoh video about the K3III Mono in a Pentax FB group;

Members Jerzy and Leland noticed that the EXIF on some of the shots has some new lenses, a 'HD FA* 200mm f2.8 ED [IF] lens' and 'HD FA 28-80 f3.5-5.6'.

Did a quick look here before posting, has this been picked up yet over here on PF land?

Beat me to it.

I used to own the 40XS, it was a great little lens, impressive for the size of it. There are a few niggles I had with mine however, the focus ring for one is very loose compared to other lenses, and mounting it on and off was tricky (it felt fiddlier and I worried about the strain on the focus ring when taking it on and off as it's almost impossible not to impact it).

But it is a great lens. I have seen magazine fashion level shots performed with it on the K-1, it's no slouch.

I went much the direction of nocturnal. Eventually I needed something else, the HD 15 and 21 and 40XS were all missing something... WR, and so I bought the 20-40 as well. Couldn't be happier. I thought f4 at 40mm would be a bit of a let down but in truth it's not been that big a deal. The rounded aperture blades really assist in providing pleasing oof areas.

The idea of this thread is an interesting one. I'm not sure of it's intent or purpose, the FA43 simply beats it the DA40 in every way except size and weight perhaps. The price tag reflects this also. A DA40 cannot do f1.9 and thus is already behind the 8 ball for a number shooting situations (low light, lower ISO capability leading to higher IQ, more pronounced bokeh, higher levels of subject isolation blah blah blah).

I have the FA43 and 20-40, my 40XS was sold to help fund these purchases. What I think this thread would benefit from would be some comparison shots, has anyone got a FA43 and DA40?

Seeing as nocturnal shared a cheeky 20-40mm shot, so shall I (sorry nocturnal for bringing up this image again, but perhaps the people here will find this interesting).

Below is an image shot on the KP, one of the shots is taken with the FA43 @f4, the other the 20-40 set to 40mm and also f4. What we're analysing here is the difference in bokeh quality;

Can you guess which side is the 20-40 shot and which the 43? Would be interesting to do similar comparison shots with a DA40 and 43 :)

I think that makes sense, I mean if you let zooms in at 40mm we have opened a whole can of worms and so many other lenses can start to make appearances here.

I have actually made a FA43 album as it's one of my favourite pieces of glass (my workhorse), you're welcome to view the shots over here >> Behance

I'll share/embed a couple more here in this thread as well;

Here's a couple of older shots when I had the DA40XS (my editing skills were not as polished as the more recent shots above.

Thanks!

Yeh I think so, it is more apparent when having the images large on a 32 inch monitor, once stuck on a web page the feeling becomes a little less intense but is still there. I liken it to 'breathing room' or 'space/breadth', things feel slightly less claustrophobic.
Still however, the little APS-C I think did well and many tripped up on these images mistaking them for Med Format. A fun little exercise :lol:

I think you've missed the point of the 'test'. Each image IS the same image, the slider when dragging across ONLY reveals the text on the bordering to let you know which format sensor was responsible for the shot. You are supposed to guess before dragging the slider across, do you think this particular image was shot on Medium Format or APS-C? Then drag the slider to find the answer. Hope that clarifies.

Nice! Well done! I do agree, this was a test of sorts as to whether I keep the 645D. Not that its a bad camera, but my problems are all to do with volume of kit. I hardly bring the 645D to work because of bulk size and weight. I actually wanted to know if there was an adapter for the X mount for Fuji that could take G mount lenses, then I could start to work on a X and G system, maybe even using MF glass on ASP-C as a way to keep lenses interchangeable between the two sensor types (for example trade in my XF 90/2 and replace with the GF 80/1.7 and use on both platforms), this would really help keep the event bag down in weight, but alas no such adapter exists (and likely never will).
I am always impressed with how the 645D performs, but the ASP-C did really well I think to keep up. A few people have been caught out thinking a certain APS-C shot was MF etc. Fun exercise! :lol:

Thanks very much. Actually in this instance the Med Format struggled more in low light. The 645D is not known for its low light strengths, no IBIS, f2.8 and really you want to keep a lid on ISO (its max is 1600), means I often have to tripod with this camera. Whereas the little Fuji XH2S had the super fast 40mm f0.85, that is a low light eater :lol:

This shoot was an experiment of sorts to mix my Pentax 645D shots in with my Fuji XH2S. This post could probably be moved to the 645D section if admin wanted to (as the leading image here is 645D), but I didn't want to ruffle feathers as the blog post contains video and stills with Fuji.

New vlog.

I dunno if this is of much interest to those here, but in this video I talk about a breaking point with the XT4 that led me down the path to checking out the XH2S (despite my reluctance). This is not a review per se, but rather a list of all the shortcomings of the XT4 and whether the XH2S managed to resolve them or not. The video is chaptered.

Thanks for looking/watching.

Seeing as my '.....' comment was deleted, I would just like to try again to express my lack of enthusiasm for this kind of stuff from Pentax. Fine for a company to mess around with such frivolous antics but first perhaps lets get the bread and butter stuff out of the way and into the fans hands (by bread and butter I mean gaps in the current lens lineup, successor bodies that we have been waiting 6-7yrs for.., updated current/old lenses that takes advantage of modern tech improvements.

Ach... they even seem to be peeving off their own market of late. Urgh... let's just hope 2022 was a tough year for them and they get back on track with some real goodies in 2023. I know I am not just speaking for myself but many Pentaxians. There's been a barrage of nonsense that has aggravated their user base both far away and near home. Limited runs of bodies, wooden grips, spaceship hotshoe covers, even firmware that is either locked to certain lenses or a feature restricted to just Japan! And now 100 units of mount plates...

What kind of message is this sending out to their fan base? I really feel its a bit of a 'just because you can doesn't mean you should', it comes off as very negative press and potentially runs the risk of driving consumers away. Nothing they have done in recent times makes me feel like they care about fans that actually need or want tools to assist them with their actual work. This mount doesn't help me and feels like a doodle in class when they should be paying attention!

It doesn't matter if its a different division, or 3rd party, Pentax/Ricoh have to pay someone, some branch for all this stuff. Even brands that are doing very well for themselves don't really indulge in these practices, because doing limited stuff comes with its own negative press. We know they have limited resources, I just feel every penny should be spent on genuine fast tracking products.

This stuff is more like the icing on the cake but Pentax haven't made a cake yet! :D

Thank you. Indeed this type of work is far easier with a smaller camera like my Fuji XT4 or even K-1. The most cumbersome issue being handholding a 645D with just one hand, deliberately moving it a tad (not too much!) to get some ambient blur whilst the other hand holding a powerful enough flash to freeze motion (speedlights can be too weak or lack speedy enough recycle times, plus bulbs rule!). My poor wrists! :lol: If I could do it again I should have placed the light on my tripod to have both hands on the 645, but I wanted to be respectful of the crowd and limit my presence. Many of my shots were taken squatted down so that those behind me could see.
If nothing else this is definitely an example of 'it can be done' but there are surely easier tools to get the job done. A lot of this type of action work has a degree of luck as well (I can't possibly know the dance and what is going to happen next) and makes a 645D keeper rate pretty low compared to other systems. Still its a lot of fun to try :)

Those with Facebook accounts may be able to see the actual dance I shot here; Log into Facebook | Facebook

Thank you.

Yeh, I'm not much of a 'car guy', I missed that gene, so when I am presented with shooting cars I am a little lost. I find it hard to see the curves and lines sometimes and this particular parking lot was dimmer than it looked, having to find compositions with the restrictions of a tripod and being ever so careful not to get too close to the car and accidentally scrape or damage it was something I had to factor in! I couldn't just lean in and take a shot like I could with my K-1 or XT4.
But having said all that, I do feel there is something really cool about 645 shots of cars, something about the object being very familiar to us and the sensor giving way to giving us that depth and space perception that somehow really works. I took a few shots with the GRIIIx as well and its quite interesting to see how much of that is lost in translation (despite IQ and colours being super). One benefit however is that others around don't seem keen to mess with the guy with the big 645D and tripod, not many are brave enough want to step in front and ruin my shot :lol: It's like we've come full circle now, and those still wielding a large camera must be 'serious' and those with smaller gear must surely be only enthusiasts :D

Thanks again.
