Banding ?

I normally cover the viewfinder with my hand. However as the light was so flat I know for a fact I just stood closer to the camera on a few shots to try and block any stray light with my body..I'm guessing it wasn't enough in this instance.

Thanks to everyone for helping

Due to lightroom throwing a wobbler, the lens isn't the 77mm Pentax, but sigma 17-70.

Still used with a lens hood. No water on the lens and the shots of 30 secs and 1/8 second I also took were unaffected. I really think it's light in the viewfinder

Banding ?

Just looking through some RAW files in Lightroom taken at the weekend, and I have 2 shots with a strange banding effect as per the attached photo.

Hopefully it's easy to see, I've processed the shot slightly in camera RAW to try and make the problem more obvious.

Both the 2 shots with the problem were taken in a sequence of about 14 images that day, both were around 15 second long exposures and shots with shorter and longer exposure times were unaffected (varying from 1/8 sec to over 70 seconds).

The only similarity was that they were both in portrait mode and at 17mm on a Sigma 17-70 lens at ISO 200

For the record I always block the viewfinder on long exposures and there was no direct light behind me anyway.

I did use a lens hood and a ND filter but i've never had this problem before and the pictures taken after were fine too.

I use a Pentax KS1 and have the Slow Shutter Speed NR option to ON.

The shots were in RAW mode.

Anyone have any clues ?

Thanks

Robin

Hi Barso. Firstly im a fellow K-S1 owner in Tyne & Wear after buying mine on black friday last year for a similar price to yours.

I think you will love the camera...as do i. I havent come from another DSLR so have no prejudices about the style or handling of the K-S1 (which seems to be mentioned often by others online).

The camera is intuitive to use, is fast, light with the brilliance of in body stabilisation and most importantly great image quality.

there are little upgrades I'd like (WR, WIFI etc) but nothing to complain about and i just want to take pictures with it all the time. For the price you paid there really is nothing better IMO.

congratulations on your new purchase. Im sure you'll love it.

and if you are located where i assume there are some local FB sites sharing pictures I can recommend..if that's your thing !

Cheers. Robin.

I wont buy a used lens of eBay. Local camera shop gets pentax in occasionally and they are fully warranted (hence the 50-200mm Pentax purchase). New ive seen the Tamron for £132 and Sigma £250. I think the Pentax was £350+. As all my RAW files are processed via Lightroom I've never had a non-curable problem with CA on my photos

Interesting points and great pics Normhead.

Tbh i dont envisage me making any big prints in the near future....since getting the KS1 the biggest ive printed is 7x5" !

Maybe that would change if i take shots that were good enough to show off or even sell. At the moment my photos are web based viewing only...in which case am i going to really notice a drop in quality ?

The DA 18-135 seems like a wondeful lens but is way out of my price range.

Im tempted to get one of the 3rd party 18-200mms and sell the DA50-200. If the IQ isnt as good (for my usage) as the 18-55 then it can be used as a walkaround lens with the smaller zoom kept for more serious/creative use

Thanks for all your replies. Maybe i should qualfy things a little.

Firstly i love slrs and my K-s1 in particular and dont have a real issue carrying or changing lenses. However i have been plagued by sensor dust badly and thought with the 50-200 being underused now i could change to a superzoom....if the drop in quality wasnt too great. It seems from your comments that unfortunately this is what i will find.
For now i think ill stick unless i can find a 18-135 at a good price.

im also cleaning the sensor today properly so hopefully the dust issue will be alleviated some.

thanks all

Hi all and apologies if im asking something that has been done to death !

I have a K-S1 and have the following lenses :- Pentax DA 35mm; 18-55mm DAL kit lens, Pentax 50-200mm WR and lately the Sigma 70-300 APO. The latest addition has made the Pentax 50-200 a bit redundant but the big Sigma is quite a beast as a walkaround. I'm considering trading in the 2 Pentax lenses for either a Tamron or Sigma 18-200mm or even Sigma 18-250. The 18-55mm kit lens is often cited as poor for image quality, although TBH ive been satisfied with it. Would either of the superzooms be much worse optically than the kit lens or perhaps even surpass it ?

Any comments welcome

Thanks

Robin

K-S1 sensor dust

Hi all.

Im new to DSLR photography and seem to be having issues with dust on the sensor.

I know some dust is unavoidable to some degree, but I'm getting dust spots on every image that need cloning out in post processing. This is obviously on wide angle lenses at small apertures but is even obvious on telephoto lenses such as 300mm at F6. I always ensure the camera is off when i change lenses and point the camera body down.

people ive spoken to dont have the same kind of problems. Does anyone else have the same kind of issues ?

Is it something specific to Pentax or the K-S1 ?

Thanks mcgreni. Ive had the camera less than a month and am champing at the bit to use it. This got me thinking about extending the use of the in built flash, as back in my 35mm days i used to use bounced flash and off camera a bit on my P30T.

Flash prices are a lot higher than I expected TBH and i really dont know just how much use it would get to justify the cost. I may go to £70 or £80 max unless it turns into something i decide to use a lot.

Still can't get outside due to torrential rain. So used my old tripod and manual 28-80 Vivitar lens to play with some macro shots.

These plastic beads seemed like a colourful option. There's a few things in the shot i dont like but nice to know a lens that has lived in a bag since 1998 still works !

Hi all.

I'm a 48 year old dad of two boys and live in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear.

20 years ago I spent some time with 35mm as my hobby but gradually that died away although I've always liked taking pictures with compacts and cameraphones. This year upgrading to a Galaxy S6 and getting some positive feedback to some shots on Flickr etc.have rekindled the bug.

I looked at CSCs and Bridge cameras but knew I really wanted a DSLR however a Pentax seemed out of my range. Black Friday at Jessops changed that and the K-S1 was available with the kit lens for £240 instead of £420. It would have been rude not too ! This meant I now have a camera that can use my old manual lenses from my P30t (28-80, 28mm, 80-200) as well giving me a load of options.

I read every review I could on the Pentax and the only negatives really were around its pricing (obviously not an issue for the price I paid) and ergonomics.

Now ive never owned a DSLR or even an autofocus 35mm slr so for me the camera is superb. I have no issues with the handling or controls as someone coming from another equivalent might, in fact I love it.

The only issue is getting outside at the moment, a combination of awful weather and work/family commitments.

in fact ive already added the 35mm F2.4 DA lens to the collection !

I hope to add some decent shots to the site soon

Thanks for reading

Robin Taylor
