2024 Eclipse Contest Diamond Ring in Texas

After three minutes of totality behind a dense cloud, the sun and moon emerged long enough for me to snap this picture of the "Diamond Ring." The lingering cloud on the left provides depth and context for an interesting day chasing open skies for the eclipse.

A construction site near Flatiron Reservoir, Colorado, is normally a light pollution nightmare, but it created a nice landscape lighting for the eclipse on Sunday night.

I was skeptical when I left work last night a few miles north of you whether the sunset would do much. Boy was I wrong -- and regretting not having my kit packed with me. Nice work to capture a brilliant subject.

There was a question about whether the specks on the 100 DFA Macro were exterior dust, and they were. I gave it a soft cloth treatment and the lens came clean. Listing is updated.

I was taking a picture of a painted lady butterfly hanging out in the garden when I saw it was providing cover for this little wolf spider.

This forum has been great for me as I've gone from the kit lenses to a high-quality kit that is right for me.
Along the way, however, I've picked up some used lenses from other members here and via the auction sites that I no longer use. I'd like to get them into the hands of people who are like I was: exploring lenses that do one or two things well instead of a bunch of things OK.

I'm offering several for sale: All are functional, none has fungus, some have exterior dust, and all are priced to be at or below what was the most-recent reported sale on the auction site. I have lens caps and back caps for each. I hope you will appreciate the value for each, and if you think a price on a lens is too low, please remember these are intended for newer users. Or buy it and give it to a friend.

Shipping will be in a standard USPS small or mid-size priority box, so I'll add that cost; If you buy two lenses, I can fit them both in one mid-size box.

If you think I described the lens poorly or it was damaged, feel free to send it back using slow mail. Again, this is meant to find good lenses good homes, not perfect lenses to perfect homes.

Here's the lineup:

*** SOLD *** SMC 200mm F2.5: Actually the newest in my collection, it just didn't bring me joy. I like the DA 60-250 better, even though it's a stop slower. $225.

DFA 100mm F2.8. Not the Weather Resistant version. Really like it, but have other macro options I use regularly. Specks in picture are exterior dust. $200.

*** SALE PENDING *** DA 55mm F1.4: Great portrait lens, but I don't shoot portraits. $250

*** SOLD *** DA 35mm F2.8 macro: My intro to really sharp macros, it's just too wide for what I like to do. But I didn't know that until after I had this awesome lens. Green band. $175.

*** SOLD *** Sigma 17-50 mm F 2.8. My crop lens workhorse, but now I shoot full frame. This has some external dust from Zion National Park that I haven't been able to get out, but none in the lens. $125.

Pentax macro rings: Like I say, I really enjoy shooting macro, but I thought I would like the tubes better. They're not for me. $40.

I ended up with the Vanguard Alta Sky because it has a drone-carrying feature as well as a sturdy waist belt. It's not perfect, but it checked almost all of the boxes I needed - and which appear similar to yours.

My choice of prime lens kit for Pentax K1

I'm with you on having a macro-centered kit with versatility. I added the 150 F2.8 Irix Dragonfly for when I need something with reach. Upside: It's so sharp that on a K-1 you can crop the heck out of an image and still get a sharp shot. Downside: It's big and heavy, so it's not a walkaround lens but one that is toted around in my backpack when I'm out in the wild and need a bird or critter shot. I'd heartily recommend it.

I thought I heard in the video that the cost would be in the "high 200,000 Y" which could go to $2,800. That would put it on par with the list price of a Sony A7rIII or Nikon Z7ii

Worthwhile used Camera Dealers in Denver or Colorado Springs?

You might try Mike's Camera. Again, more miss than hit on ever having Pentax gear. The lack of an authorized dealer in the state has really stunk and eliminated hopes for a robust used market.

On my final night of trying to capture NEOWISE, a storm blew in from the north. The lightning messed with my night vision so much that I wasn't sure I got the comet in frame until I came home and processed the image.

Something to consider: The K1 and K3ii share a common battery (as with the K3). That has made life much easier than when I had to juggle two types.

wide angle lens

Having owned a couple in this category, let me tell you about the variables that affected me the most: speed and auto-focus. In your budget - and honestly, that's where my budget has been, too -- I have had the Sigma 10-20 mm F 4-5.6, which is a fun autofocus lens for daytime use not only for landscape but for capturing fun wide images in the city. For stars, though, speed is important to me, and the Sigma is slow. So I've had the 24mm F 1.4 from Samyang, which is a manual focus. Love it for astro and landscapes when I'm using a tripod. As a walk-around lens, not so much. I dabbled with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 autofocus purchased from a forum member, but it just wasn't wide enough or fast enough in its autofocus for my tastes. I think when you start looking for that lens that does both autofocus and speed, the cost goes beyond the listed budget. If I had to have only one, I'd choose the wide, fast manual focus, and recognize its limitations and keep the other lens on the camera for walking around. Hope this helps.

Bower 85mm F1.4, Pentax F 50mm F1.7, M 50mm F1.4, Tokina 500mm F8, Pentax 1.7x TC

Asking Price
150.00 USD

Item Location
Loveland (United States)

Item Description
I'm retreating from some LBA purchases that are sitting unused. All lenses are free of fungus, some external dust from the high desert climate.

Bower 85mm F1.4: This manual lens is incredibly sharp and incredibly fast. I just prefer the 55mm length for the portraits I take. Bought new, comes with hood, caps and box. I scratched the exterior taking off the filter today but it does take filters. Grr. $150.

Pentax F 50mm F1.7: The first lens I had with the K-1; Again, selling only because the 55mm has stayed on the camera, rendering this one expendable. Comes with caps and a handy Lowe bag. $90.

Pentax M 50mm F1.4: Bought used. Clean, rarely used by me. $50. Caps included, no case.

Tokina 500mm F8: A beautiful reflector, with a handsome case and a series of filters that I've never taken out of their plastic holders. It's too nice to be sitting, unused. $150.

Pentax F 1.7x TC: I just never had the right combination of lenses and body to make this work for me. Comes with the bag, caps. $200.

Cropped after being shot in FF or in crop mode? I've thought about getting a K-1 as an upgrade to my K-3, but my lens set (including the DA* 300 mm) is very crop-centric.
