A glory is an atmospheric effect similar to a rainbow or sun dog. A Glory containing the viewers shadow is called a Brocken Spectre, or a Mountain Spectre. I shot this Glory from a high ridge at Kicking Horse ski resort at Golden BC, with my shadow at its centre:

This is from a couple of weeks back. I don't think I quite nailed the focus, but even in Live View with high magnification it was hard to judge. I've been meaning to try again, maybe from a darker location and with Astrotracer, but haven't managed to do so yet. Comet NEOWISE, click through to view on Flickr. |

I expect Adobe's DNG converter would convert his existing KP PEFs to DNG.

An alternative to investing in a faster lens could be better noise reduction software. I got quite clean results from my K-01 up to around ISO 1600-3200 with good software (I use Topaz Denoise, others are as good or maybe even a little better). There are other reasons to shoot at lower ISOs, so it may not be the best choice for you. I also had the previous-generation Sigma 18-50/2.8 EX DC Macro on my K-01, and found it easy enough to use, but I also put up with the DA*50-135/2.8 on it, so I might just be a masochist ... :-)
My wife has the K-01 now, and my daughter has the Sigma on my K-x, after I upgraded to a K-3 and Sigma 18-35/1.8 Art (although the DA 16-85 now lives on my K-3, and the Art only comes out for VERY low light conditions).

The 8-16 is REALLY WIDE. You can’t really appreciate how wide it is without experiencing it. It is difficult to use for landscapes, at least at 8-10mm, because of this. It is best for exaggerated perspective, with a very close foreground object, and for tight spaces. The 10-20/3.5 would be a better choice generally. Slot canyons might be tight enough for 8mm, but I think you’d be OK with the 10-20. Also, the 8-16 does not take filters, but I think the 10-20 does.
I also concur with the recommendation for the 55-300 over either super zoom. The DA* 60-250 is even better, but much bigger, heavier and pricey-er.

I have the O-ME53 on my K-3, and while I can see all the info displayed in the viewfinder, I do have to shift my viewing angle. I can’t see it all at once. I do wear glasses (even when shooting, there is no astigmatism correction on the OVF), which exacerbates the issue.

Thanks. It is also really light, and feels kind of plasticy, which probably also contributes to its bad rep. I don't mind it. I've got the DA 40 XS on it this week, which is supposed to be good stopped down a little. I told my wife I needed a silver FA 31 for it. That didn't go over very well ... :)

Although not nearly as exotic as many of the cameras posted here, I managed to score a new-old-stock Pentax *-ist from a local retailer. I guess it has just been sitting in their stockroom, gathering dust, for the last 10 or 15 years. Shown with the SMC DA 70/2.4 Limited mounted. |

I have both. I find it takes more work to get good results with the Sigma than with the Pentax. In low light, though, the Sigma at f/1.8 or 2.0 will get shots you can’t get with any other zoom. Mine got quite a workout in Lewis and Clark Caverns last summer. I think I’ve used it maybe once since then. The 16-85 is my go-to day-to-day lens. If you “feel the need for speed”, get the Sigma. If f/4 is good enough, get the Pentax.

Ultra wide lenses (wider than about 15 or 16 mm) are REALLY wide. I have the Sigma 8-16. I find it is not that useful for landscape work, which surprised me. I find it works well for “close quarters” work. I took it on a tour through a vintage B-17 bomber, and it was amazing. It is also great for “exaggerated perspective”, with a very close subject, and a distant background where the effect provides interesting subject isolation. That isn’t very useful for landscape, and probably not street photography (which I don’t do, so take it for what it’s worth). It can be good for interior architecture. For landscape work, I’d think something like the 12-24 would work well. It reaches into the ultra-wide zone, but is mostly “regular” wide angle. On the other hand, if close quarters or exaggerated perspective sounds interesting, an ultra-wide, like the Sigma 8-16, Sigma 10-20, or the not-yet-released Pentax DA* 11-18/2.8 might be worth a try.

If you add space between the main lens and the soratama, the ball will appear smaller in the frame. If you add an extension tube between the main lens and the camera body, it won’t — it might even get a little bigger. A cheap, used, deglassed teleconverter can make for an inexpensive extension tube.
