K-mount at K-mart.

Back in the day, when a rural family would actually drive 50 miles to visit a K-Mart, Monky Wards, and the big Sears, that wasnt the hometown Hardware and appliance store. The Photo department was full of K1000's and a vast selection of Focal branded K-mount lens.....I would spend lots of time in the photo department as Mom took forever in the clothing departments. Wow how the mighty have fallen :(

Those are all issues, that I also struggle with. I always end up taking an hour or more deciding on 1 or 2 film cameras to take along with the K-3ii when I pack for a trip, do I take the MX or the KX, the KSX-P or F3 etc. Then I have 5 exposed rolls in my desk waiting to be processed.
Batteries, I spent an entire afternoon looking for my spare batteries for the K3, before giving up and switching to the K10....I had rearainged the room and had buried the charger behind the night stand.

Every once in awile Shopgoodwill.com comes thru with a real keeper. My MX, my KX and LX for example. Today I just received the KX's Ricoh cousin, the XR-1 in almost perfect condition. Won on a $9.99 bid so for $20.00 with shipping.
Not a scratch on it. and It came with the basic f2 50 and a soft case. It looks like the meter is good, only bleminsh is slight desilving of the prisim (a thin black line down the center of the view finder). Can't wait to try it out side by side with the KX.

I also got a broken ME Super Free :hmm: with a M50 f1.7 for a few bucks more the same night... So I think that the XR-1 has a new lens, Making a real nice combo.

If I had a dollar..... Sorta like designing an unsealed Lead acid battery compartment, above the Blood Pressure module board I had to replace today because batteries never leak acid and melt IC's.....and Gravity doesnt apply!:hmm:

Sears models and Ricoh Models
KS Super and Super II were XR-6's minus 1/1000th-----Ricoh/Sears answer to the ME
KSX Super is a KR-10 Super /XR-10-----Ricoh/Sears equilivant to the ME Super
KS-2 is a XR-7- The above with a multi-exposure button added

The KSX-P was an odd ball as it is a Chinon CP-5 Chinon/Sears Equilivant to Ricoh XR-P and Pentax Super Program

Ricoh also had a few odd ball model numbers in its own line up. Instead of a KR-10 my identical camera is a Ricoh A-100, An XR-2 without Mult-Exposure
What was sold in the us as the KR-30p, was sold elsewere as XR-20p....These two models were the equilivent in the line up to the Pentax Program Plus

I have several Chinon's Ricoh's and Sears cameras.

While not as fancy as a Super Program, the XR-P and CP-5/KSX-P both have pros and cons. Off the three; the Ricoh had the most features, but the electronics have not agged well. I have had several XR-P's and KR-30sp's just quit mid roll with fresh batteries. The CP-5 and its Sears KSX-P twin are my favorite of the buch. Great features, Program mode using ANY K-mount lens, and a plasticy industructable construction, and cheap AAA batteries.

My very first SLR was a Sears KS Super II and my second was a Ricoh KR-30sp, I bought as a College graduation present to myself.

The XR6 amd XR7 use the same kit, they are the same bodies, the XR6 is Auto only, while the XR7 has Auto, Manual modes and multi exposure, the XR10 or KR10 Super are the XR7 minus multi exposure. I think the same kit also works for the XR-P and KR-30sp

The Chinon CP-5 and its sibling the Sears KSX-P dual program fits the bill also, and it works in program mode with any K-mount lens, K, M, A, KR, etc. I have both and they are the cameras I grab for a weekend car trip as they take AAA batteries and are built like plastic tanks.
I dont use my Ricohs of the same vintage XR-P and KR-30SP as I have found that the electronics will fail with no warning as they approach 40 years old.
For the Pre Program era I love my Ricohs (XR-7, XR-2) for the same reasons the above posters mention.

For non K-mount I really love my Nikon F-3

You didnt see it before I set it up this evening. At -8 degrees, I think they will get a break this weekend. Until two days ago the MX and KX were sitting on the backseat floor of my car. But I do need to thin the herd, I plan on selling all my canons except the ones on the top shelf, someday;) I am eying my old F-1 for an ebay auction starting tomorrow I think.

"Santa" got me a nice LX so I decided it was a good time to Set up two shelves of my "keepers" These are the cameras that either have a special meaning and or I use on a regular basis. The KR-30sp was the first SLR that I bought with my own paycheck, and the Canon D60 was my first DSLR. My main users are the MX, KX and Chinon CP-5, But I really have grown to like the ES II and hope to get to know the LX well.

The shelf below these contains all the rest of my Pentax's and Canons. And my TV shelf unit is full of Ricoh's, Sears, and Chinons. My bookcase is full of everything else including a full shelf of Kodaks with there boxes.

I am looking at a -L, -5, -7 and -M and the backs are totally interchangeable, I just took the Data Back off The ZX-5 and swapped it with the plain one on the ZX-M. I would also get her a FG battery holder, to allow her to use AA batteries instead of the expensive CR2's

ME-F Question

I also never use the Focus Assist on mine, it seems to work OK, but It doesn't really help me and just uses up the battery. I do find the ME-F to be the best "ME Super". It is just enough bigger that it is easier to handle for me. I really prefer the size of the KX to my M series bodies. For 80's era K mounts I really prefer my Chinon CP-5 and its Sears branded sibling KSX over my Super Program, My Super Program is great and I love to use it but it is so pristine and pretty that I am afraid I might break it :) My Chinons are all Goodwill.com buys and built like plastic coated bricks, use AAA batteries and have easier to use controls, so i don't fear tossing them behind the seat on the floor for weeks at a time.

Chinon CP-9AFautofocus lens, Pentax digital SLR compatibilty

I have all three of the K mount program cameras and the slimed down versions, Chinon CP-5, Pentax Super Program, Program Plus and Ricoh XR-P and KR-30sp. The XR-P, still uses the old fashioned shutter speed dial which would make it my favorite of the era; The KR-30Sp was the camera I bought as a graduation present to myself but, the Ricoh electronics are no longer reliable after 30 years (I have had several Ricoh bodies, just die in the middle of a roll). The Super Program is the flashiest and has the best build quality, But the CP-5, even with its plasticy feel. is the Program K mount that I use most often, I like the battery grip with AAA batteries or AA in the winder. and its very easy to use interface, and viewfinder info. And they just keep working. And the CP-7m is almost like a manual focus version of the CP-9AF and is also a great camera better than the A3000
The CP-9AF is one of those strange early dead ends, A simular situation is the Yashica 230AF, its a great camera, I like it alot, but you basicly have a choice of two lenes.

Chinon CP-9AFautofocus lens, Pentax digital SLR compatibilty

The CP 9 is an orphan camera as very few lenses were made for it and according to the Manual it only works in Program with KA amd CAF lenes.

Generic, RK, K and M lenses do work in Program mode on the CP 5 and CP 7 hence there are no P or A Chinon lenses, but both those camera have P mode. And the Sears KSX-P is labeled Dual 2 Program.

This is from the CP7m manual:
Programmed AE Signal and Aperture Setting

Unlike other program cameras, the CP-7m functions perfectly with "K" (even "KA" or "RK") mount lenses even in program mode. Generally, you
should set the aperture at its minimum seeing. Although you can take a perfectly exposed picture at any aperture setting, the applicable
programmed range is limited. The program AE signal LED is useful to check the lens aperture seeing for program modes. The programmed AE
viewfinder LED for P. PA or PC in use will "flicker" when the lens aperture is within four stops of the full maximum aperture. Set the aperture
within the range so that the programmed AE signal LED will not "flicker". On the other hand, if you would not stop down any further than a
particular f/stop, simply set the aperture ring to the desired aperture.
I have a K 3.5 28 on my CP-5 right now and Program mode works perfectly

So it looks like Chinon took a backwards step when designing the CP-9AF

As a Chinon Cp-7, CP-5 and KSX-P user, I can attest that any K-mount lens, Pentax M, Pentax A, or Ricoh P, etc. does infact work in Program mode on the CP series and Sears KSX-P, you just have to set the lens apature at the Minimum IE f16 or f22, you can also set it to a lower number if your situation requires less depth of field.
This is the one area where Chinon got the better solution compaired to Pentax and Ricoh.
