When the DA lens is on & mode in auto, I cannot see through the viewfinder & the camera will not shoot. I flicked the focus mode switch from AF to MF & it will take a picture but you cannot see through the viewfinder. If I turn on the live view screen, everything works perfectly.
The one thing I did wrong when using the manual lens was forgetting to switch focus mode to MA until after the lens had been fitted. Could this cause issues?

Hmmm. I've had a play & everything with the old manual lens is brilliant; once i got the settings right. DSLR is a bit more complicated than the super!!
I've replaced the supplied lens & can;t now use the view finder Grrr. It's taken me longer to sort this than setting up the old lens system & I'm getting nowhere. I hope I haven't broken it

It's been more than 20 years since I've played around with a new Pentax camera. My lovely Mrs just got me a K-S1 for Christmas & I feel a very lucky man :)
My last decent camera was a Pentax ME super which sadly died a long time ago. Thankfully I kept all the lenses & have dug them out to let me replay my youth.
